As I am born as a Somalian, it is days like today I am ashamed to be part of the Eve community.
All you people are taunting my fellow countrymen saying "when is the movie coming out? :D" of my brothers being killed. Do you think laughing at death and murder is the cool thing to do now...
I honestly don't know what to say... this thread is a disgrace and I hope ccp take swift action on all of those within it...

Oh yeah I forgot, its not their fault that the county has gone to **** and they resort to pirating the high seas. My bad. I'll find something worthy to blame it on.

But they got stupid and greedy and it cost them their lives. I just wonder if the captured pirate is the one that the crew originally captured.
EDIT: Going on what Jacob Mei said, I think the crew stated that the pirates freaked out once they discovered that the ship and crew were American.
Most of these pirates also aren't Muslim extremists, which seems to be a popular subject. True they might be Muslim, but they aren't doing this for religious beliefs, they just want money. In the beginning, it might have been noble intentions, stopping foreigners from stealing their fish, but greed took over.
From what I heard, these particular pirates were Islamic extremists who are (were) trying to overthrow the Somalian government and instate an Islamic theocracy in Somalia. Granted, I got this information from the only news channel that my boss has set in the break room. Three guesses which channel this is
Not to be a nitpicker, but Somalia doesn't have a government. Unless something has changed since I stopped watching the news?
Believe it or not, we do have a government.
However, it doesn't control most of the country and has been driven out of the mainland, and thus, doesn't exactly have control in the sense that a regular government does.
Edit: to the degree that the government of Somalia, isn't actually based in Somalia. Take that as you will.

Give me a break . Your so called countrymen routinely storm ships, brandish assault rifles, take hostages for ransoms of millions per head and threaten to do "something" to any hostage of french or american decent now that those respective governments are taking a stand and rescuing their citizens from -your- countrymen. Its not the eve community you should be ashamed about. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

So by your logic, if someone were to sale into your countries territory, which they didnt, its perfectly okay to run up to an unarmed ship, kidnap the crew, point a gun in their face, force them off the ship or take the ship to your port, ransom the crew for millions a head and then cry murder when something is done to stop that. If that conflicts with typical western world logic then you my friend need to seriously reexamine your values because I hate to tell you, but most countries around the world say your logic is flawed.
The pirates were shot -after- they were seen to be pointing guns at the head of their captive and that it was believed the pirates were going to shoot him.
And just so you know this particular vessel was carrying about 5,000 metric tons of relief supplies to other countries of africa, so if your countrymen had succeeded in taking the ship those supplies would not have reached their destination so this wasnt some oil tanker or cargo ship carrying weapons or what have you but likely things like food, water and medicine. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

I mean that's just common sense. Of course putting together an actual workable plan to affect those changes is a lot harder.
that's ridiculous

Yes because it so hard to take 2 minutes to look up the info yourself. Somolia tries to claim the Gulf of Aden but it is surrounded by 2 more states which is covered under article 122 of the 1980 draft convention for the third UN law of the sea conference.
In other words Somalia does not have the approval of the UN. If they want to play big boy nation they must first learn to govern then the government can go to the UN and appeal for territorial water rights. Until then they have roughly 24 nautical miles of coast to claim as theirs.
Please continue to support piracy.

The US Navy has been there for a while and will continue to stay there on an anti-piracy mission. There will be no "calling back" of any ships, this is an ongoing mission of CTF 151

Well sadly they would have thought that or we dont stand up for our own, if choosing between the two I would choose the latter.
Also I doubt the main reason these guys are doing piracy is because they want a holy war, its probably because they want money.
They want money because Somalia is mostly a ruinous wasteland that depends on foreign shipments of food, medicine, and other aid just to survive. Years of local warlords grabbing resources, and neglected farmland (what poor farmland they have, that is) has led to this. These pirates are, or rather were, desperate men, though many of them are now so flush with cash that they're seen by their countrymen as akin to rockstars, or heroes.
I am deeply glad the man got rescued, but this will make future negotiations with the pirates more difficult, and the US Navy is too stretched right now, what with supporting Iraq/Afghanistan, to protect shipping in these waters. I suspect we're going to see convoys re-emerge until this either goes away or escalates to a full blown invasion of the pirate havens. IMO, of course.

the pirates make threats but since their motive is to stay alive and make freighter loads of money i doubt they will openly start killing western crews. because they are hated enough in the world view as is. if they start killing crews then the world may not notice a B52 paying one of their pirate towns a visit.

Tbh they would have my sympathy, but the moment you cross that line and begin to not only steal to live, but also steal to get rich your nothing but a punk scumbag to me.
I dont have the numbers, but if you were to have 2-3 cruisers with some destroyers nearby with a policy of"if you get this far from the ship you get shot"as they escort vessels, it would work and im sure we can spare that many(America alone has 280 surface combat vessels alone, I dont think we need all of them in iraq/afghanistan).
This method would be used as a method of last resort, I am more prone to being pro arming ships and backing them up with blackwater mercs and such, because I am highly doubtfull these pirates are willing to board ships for cash if they are losing men every time they do it.
And lastly, if it gets really bad we always have the old standby.... Line up 50 of them, dip the bullets in pig's blood, execute 49 of them and tell the 50th to tell his friends what happened.

So putting it in Eve terms what happened?
A Freighter jumps into system. A small probe frigate waiting at the gate scrambles and webs the freighter. Shock troops board the freighter, but the crew fights back. The probe with the rest of the pirates retreats. They take some injuries, and get away with the pod pilot, in a pod. A Cormorant Destroyer responds from several jumps away. Webs and scrambles the pod, where four pirates commanders the pod, holding the pilot at gunpoint. A missile frigate Kestrel also responds and arrives shortly after the Destroyer. The freighter assigns one of its crew temporary pilot and is ordered to dock. It jumps to the next system and docks but is not allowed to go "Stationside."
Later a cyno is popped open and some Navy Seal snipers arrive on a Black Ops. They board the Destroyer and the Black Ops continues on its way back to base. They see that the captain is in imminent danger, and the Navy Seals fire three precision projectile rounds and kill the three pirates simultaneously, then tractor the pod into the Destroyer where the pilot is freed.
The End.

Quote: In 1991, the government of Somalia - in the Horn of Africa - collapsed. Its 9 million people have been teetering on starvation ever since - and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the countryÆs food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.
Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died.
Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the U.N. envoy to Somalia, tells me: ôSomebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury - you name it.ö Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to ôdisposeö of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: ôNothing. There has been no cleanup, no compensation and no prevention.ö
At the same time, other European ships have been looting SomaliaÆs seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by over-exploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300 million worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into SomaliaÆs unprotected seas.
I don't know if the story I have linked above is true or not, but if it is, it most definitly brings a new perspective to the issue. Indeed, the world rarely is black & white. Discuss...
