I think there are similar skills for the shield, but anyways... I'm looking at the skills named <Resist Type> Armor Compensation, for example: Explosive Armor Compensation. What do they really mean by hardeners?
Do they mean the platings that add armor (200mm, 400mm, 800mm, etc).
Do they mean the all-resist platings/membranes like Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane and the Adaptive Nano Plating?
Do they mean the one-resist-focus platings like the Explosive Armor Hardeners?

this. they only affect armor hardeners when theyre off, but they affect any passive resist (eanm, therm/kin/em/exp) platings and energized membranes.

Armor Hardeners + Armor repper = Active Tank. Armor compensation skills do not affect your resists at all, unless the hardener is not active, and only by a small percentage.
They do increase the resists of membranes and plating (but not the plates adding armor), and thus increase your passive module strength.
Most folks use Active Armor Tanks, but may throw in a plate or membrane for fitting/cap purposes. In that event Armor Compensation skills will increase any passive module resists.
Not familiar of any totally passive armor tanks, as there does not seem to be a ship with natural armor resists equivalent to the passive shield setup of the Drake.

*confused*
does the module itself not say it affects active modules aswell, just by not as much? (or is that just the shield one?)
even if you aren't actively passive tanking they are still good skills to get to 5 because they increases your resists at least 3-5% across the board ------------------- |

If you install an EANM (or 2) on your ships, like most armor tankers, then they are certainly worth training.
Unlike the shield comp skills which don't do much for an invuln 2, these are always good.
The other reason they're good is buying you a few seconds if you lose your cap and need to warp out of a mission or burn back to the gate in a gatecamp. "Boo hoo. Cry some more." CCP Whisper
