So I'm tempted to pick up Guild Wars, as I hear the team PvP in it can be exciting and engaging. Only problem is I'm having a hard time finding any type of compilation package that has Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North together; as far as I can tell there's only a GOTY edition that has Prophecies and EotN together, with Factions and Nightfall seperate.
So I ask of you, OOPE, what would you recommend? Just suck it up and buy all three of them, keep looking for a total compilation, wait it out until GW2 or buy another game?

Edited by: Zora Xen on 15/04/2009 08:38:27 There's a few options.
Option 1: Buy GOTY + NF + Factions + EOTN
This will net you all classes, all skills, all PvE areas & all PvP areas.
Option 2: Buy GOTY or NF or Factions PLUS PvP Access Kit
This will net you the skills for whichever campaign(s) you pick, but will exclude skills unique to the campaign(s) excluded. Certain core skills are common to all campaigns.
Depending on the campaigns you choose, some classes will be excluded. Factions unlocks Assassin & Ritualist. NF unlocks Paragon, Dervish
Depending on the campaigns you choose, some PvP areas will be excluded. For example, if you don't buy Factions you can't play Alliance Battles.
To gain those excluded skills/classes/PvP areas you can buy a PvP Access Kit. This will let you access all classes & all skills BUT you can only create PvP characters for those additional classes -not PvE characters nor PvE content for them. If you go down this route, I would recommend against buying Prophecies, but instead buy Factions or Nightfall then buy the PvP Access Kit. This will give you the opportunity to create a PvE character for one of those unique campaign classes as Prophecies contain the core classes but not the 4 additional classes.
My advice would be to buy GOTY, NF + Factions.
This will give you all classes & all skills -except PvE skills in EoTN which you can't use in PvP anyway.
If you enjoy that content, then buy EoTN.
With no subscription it's a bargain for the amount of gameplay you get. I've played GW for over 3 years and still jump on when I get the itch.

If you want some advice...
PvE assassins are fun. So are necro minion-masters. PvP monking is tough but invaluable for becoming competent in PvP.

IMHO you should buy Prophecies and Factions first - Prophecies gives you a very good grounding in the game's core classes and has an interesting and long story leading up to the endgame PvP. The starter area in Prophecies is also the best I've encountered in any game, ever, and it's still incredibly beautiful 4 years after the game's release. Factions probably has the best game world out of all of them [maybe excluding EoTN, but that's an expansion of the original more than a true new game] and some of the best PvP in the game is to be found fighting between the two factions in the south-east of the world - the Luxons and Kurzicks. Also, if you get bored of the long Prophecies campaign, the Factions campaign is like EXP heaven and a lot more interesting, but quite a bit shorter, so you can sail off there for some light relief and get your levels up a bit if you're tired of the PvE and want to jump into PvP sooner.
Although you can create a PvP-only level 20 char at any point, lots of advantages are gained by doing the PvE first, such as getting unique modifiers for weapons and armour, and getting a good understanding and grounding in classes.
Nightfall and EotN are very good games, but Nightfall's unique classes are really more designed for players who have some experience with the skill system and other classes prior to that. Eye of the North is meant for max-level [only 20] players and a lot of the content requires a pretty good understanding of working together as a team. If you wind up liking the PvE as well as the PvP, then EotN is great for it's fun dungeons and beautiful environments.
So yes, my recommendation is Prophecies + Factions first, and leave Nightfall and EotN til later. You don't need them at first to get a good introduction to the game and it's PvP.

Contrary to my previous advice, I'd say this is a good option. Only downside is the shipping time/cost.
There is a virtual store that allows you to purchase campaigns in-game, but you need a working client to use it.

I remember playing the original GW campaign, that was really really fun. The package above sounded nice. If ya wanna try something a little different that's fun, pvpish and requires packs or organization of people, give the Warhammer Online trail a go. It's free and the only thing it can hurt is your time/bandwith cap
Any word on GW 2 release?

Guild wars is great, and the storyline of prophecies was just epic
I would whole heartedly reccomend purchasing each and every one of the games + the PvP is immense.
Aernanet shuffle the skills attributes monthly so nothing is ever overpowered, coming up with a match winning build is quite a challenge, and doesnt get boring

At www.plaync.com - where you have to setup account anyway, if memory serves me well - you can buy a trilogy of "Prophecy"/"Nightfall"/"Factions". Through online shop you can unlock "Eye of the North" and extra PvP-skill packages if you want.
Pretty nice game to have laying around for a boring Sunday now and then. With no fee, pretty vibrant content and sweet visuals it's a bargain, even if you only spend 20 hours in it.
Enjoy, and fly safe..

Nice, although apparently I can't get it shipped to the states from Amazon, so I'll find another buyer (pity they don't sell this in the states). Even if the shipping is going to be pricey I'd save money anyway. Thanks to everyone that's recommended it as well, I'll be having a go at it.
May have to try Warhammer, but then I'm worried memories of WoW will come back to me.

Hmm, I think I might go reinstall GW now for fun and play around abit. I'm guessing Warhammer will bring back some flashbacks, I can't really say since I can only base my opinion on WoW on a trial and watching others. There really is no grind seeing as PvP gives you the experience you need. I find in PvP I use every single skill just about(Witch Hunter), not the 1-2-3 repeat combo I've witnessed in WoW. It's not gear Centric, Level Centric, so in those ways it can be similar to GW. If I had the choice again before this semester started I probably would have dropped EVE, and Continued with WAR. It's quick and fun.

GW taught me a few lessons in game design:
> Class balance is possible. > PvE doesn't have to feel like a grind. > Character levelling is no substitute for decent story telling. > 'Free' maxed PvP-items does NOT destroy the PvE-item economy. > A stable client at release is possible. > Separating PvE & PvP content can work rather well, the key is to make each accessible. > Instancing is not the devil.
My biggest mistake was playing GW before WoW. It set me up for a high intolerance toward the incessant grinding, class-whinage & the like.
Eve is the antithesis of many of these points, but I rather liked the variety of switching between them. Besides, I played Eve long before GW so She's always been my first love.
