I think the bumping stuff should be banned from the game, or atleast changed in a way that its more realistic.
Its bullcrap that a cruiser can bump a capital, or a battleship can bump a mother or titan. I mean, if you drive full speed with your car against a train, what do you think that train is going to do? Its not gonne move an inch. Why? Because it has more mass! why does CCP count mass into things like boost rate of your MWD or AB, but ignores it when it comes to "bumping"?
Something like this should be implemented in the game aswell. If you want to bump, fine, then you get structural damage for doing so against a large object. Just something like this would happen to your nice ship:
Let CCP figure some mechanic like that out and i would be very happy to see this added to the game.
Fire away guys, ideas on this welcome! |

Gameplay reason: Ships have shields, so they bounce smoothly rather than crash.
Technical reason: Are you aware of how complex physics is?
For the server to perform realistic clip-box calculations, using the mass and velocity vectors of all objects in a grid, is not simple.
It would add massive overhead onto the server, particularly in large fleet battles, where stuff bounces off each other all the time.
Also, what happens when you warp to 0km from a gate or station, and hit it? The gate/station is physically fixed in place (it would require infinite force to move), so any ship hitting it would have to crush itself completely in order to conserve momentum.
To avoid this, you need to have gates and station as movable objects.
To cut a MASSIVELY long story short, whilst it is technically possible to do this, it is only a very minor issue, which hardly affects gameplay at all, and would cost hundreds of man hours to implement, and server operations to process.

wasn't this brought up just yesterday....oh wait yeah it was. You don't physically contact a ship when they 'bump'. Some say your shields prevent the hit, while others say that your on-board computer automatically keeps 2 ships from colliding if they get too close. Either way you should use the search or atleast look on the first 2-3 pages to see if it has been suggested in the past couple of days. ------------------------------------

A perfect example of why a frigate should not be able to knock a mining barge away from the rocks its working on.

1/2*m*v^2 should apply. Speed equals energy.
Also, there should be damage. Ie. interceptor hitting a battleship would go clean through, basically causing massive amounts of damage. (The energy would be spread on a tiny area, causing great pressure to puncture.)

Sports cars do not go straight through freight trains (or even tractor trailers), when slamming into them at high speeds.
Even bullets are destroyed when they contact their targets.

Edited by: Lear Hepburn on 15/04/2009 19:45:43 Ok, a fly and a train are travelling towards each other. Ultimately they will collide. As they do, the overpowering mass of the train will force the fly to travel in the opposite direction. To do this the fly must first stop.
So, in that millisecond when the fly stops to change direction it is in contact with the train, therefore the train must be stopped too...
Replace fly with Inty and train with Dreadnought...

I hate quoting myself but there is the reason why both ships move when the 'collide' even though they don't physically collide ------------------------------------
