Howdy,
This evening I managed to build enough standing to move up from the chickenfeed paying mission Is to the classy world of mission IIs. My first mission surprised me a little it was paying 250k for completion, 207 LP and a bonus of 200k. I could get used to this....
So, like many newbies, I clicked accept:
"Ok Anyura, for this mission I need you to..."
"Yeah, yeah, warp to location, kill rats, nuff said."
So our brave newbie decides to leave her Succubus in the hanger and take her beloved Arby out for a spin with a full compliment of tech 2 drones. One shiny warp sequence later and I'm seeing two small frigate sized rats and a Phantasm. I lock on to the Phantasm and sic the Five Stooges on it, expecting them to reduce it to wreckage in seconds.
Funny, its really not taking all that much, maybe I'd better move in closer for my pulse lasers...10 seconds later, I find my poor little Arby sandwiched between 8 Phantasms and a cloud of frigates shortly before recieving a mail from my insurance company.
I drag my smoking capsule back to the station, ready to give this evil agent a piece of my mind and shove his wretched mission back in his face, when I notice a short paragraph at the bottom of the mission:
"Destruction of enemy vessels is not required for this mission."

Even a well-fit battleship would have a hard time trying to pop the rats in that mission.

Wrong. A well fit battlecruiser could do it and a well-fit battleship is just plain overkill.

I sympathise. I can recall when my personal fortune was a massive 20M and I spent 15M of it trying out different fittings to kill all the rats in my cruiser, horribly failing and getting all frustrated and worked up. The good news is, that is the only insane one. Unless...that multistep-mission where you can fight an Amarr Battlefleet, was that L2 as well ? I dare you to Fight My Brute ! |

recon 1 of 3 is one of my favorite missions. (any lvl, but ive only seen it as a L2 and a L4). for lvl2's it has really nice bounties. and the lvl 4 version give you about 8 or so battleships with million plus bounties. takes about 10-15 minutes or so to complete.
PLUS there is a huge amount of veld in the second pocket. which is worth 3-4x more than the bounties and bonuses.

Yup, Recon (1 of 3) is way up there on my list of favourite missions :)
While the mission survival guides are one of those must-read resources, sometimes it can be fun to play the missions out on your own.
Anyura, if you want to recover from this and continue, I'd suggest getting yourself into a fast frigate and "kiting" the NPCs a long way away from the warp-in point. Just look out for any mention of web/scram in the survival guide notes.
Once you've kited far enough away, warp out, warp back in again, head for the acceleration gate, and immediately align to a celestial object and be ready to warp out the moment the mission completion announcement comes along.
You're going to love part 3.

You can just blitz it in a fast frigate. I remember it was 'easy' the first time using a Incursus, Executioner would work too with an after burner fitted. Just jump in and get to the gate asap. However, if you wait, warp out and then come back you'll need to do it Mara's way since everything has spawned.
The day I could kill off all the rats of recon 1 of 3 in my Battle cruiser, without warping out, I knew I was ready for level 3's. Very rewarding mission. Must say I lost a lot of ships on part 3 before I could tank it.....

For Recon Part 1 ....... Just go into the mission in your pod. No need to take a ship and "hope" to make it to the gate before you get popped. NPC's don't pod so you are safe.
Same as if you want to "scout" a mission. Warp into mission in your pod ....check around.. then come back in your combat ship.

/has just discovered the cloudy joys of part 3
To the poster that recommended an AB-fitted Executioner, worked like a charm thanks! However, its existance in this world was sadly brief when I thought I'd be able to whizz through the final mission before my ship got destroyed by space acid. Two Executioners later and I'm out of ideas. Should I be doing this one in a cruiser with armour reps and heavily plated? |

L3 Angel Blockade should eat a Vexor for breakfast, to name just one. You might complete it in a cruiser, but it will take forever and requires lots of warpouts. Battlecruisers are what you want for L3.
To answer the question, Recon 3 of 3 should be no problem in a well tanked cruiser fitted with AB. I dare you to Fight My Brute ! |

I completed this flying a Kestrel with an AB.
I remember this was my first level 2 mission. AWESOME rats - I thought. Fortunately I DO READ the missions (at least for the 1st time) instead of clicking-accept-OK-fast-fastasfast!!!1111111
Seriously you do need to read before accepting new, unknown missions!
BTW scariest part was maybe 2/3 (if im not wrong) with those lethal clouds. Lost the kestrel. I suggest bring a cruiser or better, and fit best AB you can.

Throw 2 overdrive injector 2's on the lows and an AB and a shield extender on the mids.. no highs needed.

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 18/04/2009 06:08:57 Yeah I had some trouble with this the first time I ran it. Had to warp out which I usually don't do.
Big adjustment for me was that I had to put some cap boosters on as the rats were using nos's.
The other thing I did was to take another account and run it with both ships.
I've got a Maller and an Arbitrator. The Arbitrator doesn't hold up so well but the Maller's got a pretty good tank, so I send it in first to get all the agro, then have the Arbitrator come along and just blithely kill the rats.
Another thing here - is to Kite the rats using beams as opposed to pulses. If you are in close with Pulses - they're in close too.
I have all my ships fitted with Over Drive Injectors and afterburners so I just stay ahead of the rats and control the fight.
I did screw up and lose a Bestower to the 3rd of 3. I had in mind trying to mine that asteroid belt on the other side of the acceleration gate but then a "giant energy wave" or some such thing (red text warning from the mission in local which I didn't see as I was fooling with the other account) and POP! no more Bestower. I left the station with an Invulnerability Shield and almost went back to get a shield booster instead but was tired and lazy and thought "oh ... I'll make it through ... I've got enough padding and the shield will regenerate on the other side ...." Wrong. All the other times I'd been through there I'd used the Arbitrator with it's armor repairer and some extra platting it carries and gotten through without a problem. If you see that red warning in local about the giant energy wave ... might be best to warp out before it hits and try again. Anyway ... better the Bestower than the Covetor who was going to follow him to that belt ...
I think this is everyone's first Level II mission ...

Just a quick word of warning about Recon 3.
When you go in it starts a series of waves of damage that increment and end in a giant wave that does a ton of damage.
If you warp out (because you're taking too much damage) then that cycle does not stop. That means that as soon as you warp in you can be hit by the giant wave.
The first time I tried it I had to warp out after trying to speed run it in my slasher. Switched to my Vexor, warped in and was in my pod almost as I landed.
A decently tanked, afterburnered Vexor can make the gate before the giant wave hits as long as the wave sequence starts when you warp in.

I can't remember what I was flying the first time I completed Recon (3 of 3). These days I use a Drake, which makes it easysauce. The fastest frigate I have is a Republic Fleet Firetail, and I'm in no hurry to lose a 20M frigate trying to speed tank the toxic slime cloud :)
An executioner with two overdrive injectors and a Cold-gas Arcjet afterburner is about the fastest an Amarr frigate can go. Something for me to try next time I get that mission!

I have something to add to this. When that giant damage wave finally comes the damage will stop after it. I once sat on the gate for a few minutes after the big wave and nothing happened. I called my new corpmate to see the cloud, since he was new in the game also, and damage waves started spawning again, so my conclusion is that ship warping into Recon (3 of 3) is the trigger.
