Hi there ^_^
I got myself a Retriever today, and i wanted to put the mining laser upgrade 1 module on it.
When i look at the fitting window and drag the module over, the cpu bar shows that i have enough cpu for it, but when i click and stick it in, i get the message that i don't have enough cpu :(
I have 33 cpu left and the mining laser upgrade shows 30 cpu needed, but i can't stick it in ... what did i miss ?

Welcome to the sucking world of fitting a Retriever
MLU makes mininglasers/stripminers to need more CPU. For example instead of 60, they need more (not sure how much). For some reason it can't be seen when fitting the ship.
You need a Co-Processor II and good electronics skills, and you will be able to fit a MLU and a Survey Scanner II.

Ah ok, there some CPU penatly on the module, i just looked it up on the item database.
So Electronics up (which is like 3 now i think) then the Mining Upgrades (like up to 4 ? or 5 ?) anything else that helps ? and is maybe faster then electronics 5 -.-
Still the retriever is really a astroid eater ^^ And i love the strip miner sounds :)

I like better the Rokh expensive but not much skill time needed, and lots of stuff to fit. I really missed the Osprey when I jumped into Retriever.
As for the skills I suggest Electronics V, you "need" it anyways for properly fit further ships and get enough CPU. The benefits of "Mining Laser Upgrade" are ridiculous, in terms of CPU need reduction.
Anyways I suggest download Eve Fitting Tool (EFT) for free. Its a wicked tool to try various fittings and know if you have enough CPU/Powergrid or not. Also counts with a character editor, to set your trained skills and so.

Edited by: Suntisa on 16/04/2009 13:09:16 Still need the ISK for the Rokh, 8 lasers firing must be sweet ^_^
Thanks for the Tips, i will try out that fitting program when i got a little time on hand :)
After a hard day at work i really like the retriever because i don't have to move the ore all the time, only every 3 min, yey

don't forget a icepack for your wrist too, rokh mining is a painful experience, you need to stager the lasers and empty your cargohold quite a few times every minutes to keep it mining proper...mine 20 min it's no problem but try an hour or two and expect carpel tunnel syndrom to set in pretty fast.

It might just be me, but you could always ignore trying to fit the retriever "just so" and instead focus your training skills on getting into a Hulk, which shouldn't have nearly the fit issues of the retriever. You're going to want a Hulk eventually anyway, the retriever is really just a stepping stone until you get there.

You can use all the skills you develop for the Retriever on the Hulk ... which by the way ... isn't such great shakes itself when it comes to PG/CPU and module slots. If you try and put a good tank on a Hulk you're going to have fitting problems. It's better than the barges - which are terrible - but it isn't a combat ship.
Now - one of the other fitting options for miners is Expanded Cargo Holds. Which go in the same Low slots as the MLU's. So you've got your choice here - to upgrade your mining capacity or upgrade your cargo capacity.
You can also put cargo rigs on your ships - or - you can put power grid rigs on them, depending on whether or not you want capacity or a little help with fitting that tank.
There isn't a best choice here - it's just a question of your situation and what your priorities are.

For all you Rohk miners,I suggest using Modulated Deep Core II's
They have a longer cycle time and can use crystals. They give you better yield for the same fitting costs and their longer cycles give you a break from the constant mining and scooping that is a Miner II Rohk. In the end the price of the Rohk is more then the price of the Hulk.

Electronics, Engineering, Mechanical, are all skills you want to have at 5 anyway as you go through life in Eve.
If you ned a little help with your set up or need a mining home, contact me in game.
We can "learn ya" we have good people on standby to help out young miners.. and we have Orca Support.. (wait thats me).. oh yeah

Only got Electronics to Lvl 4 training atm to lvl 5, only able to fit 1 x strip miner I without going ay over CPU. Fitted a Co-Processor II in low and an MLU with a scanner I i mid. Anything else to bosot CPU? Is it worth finding and fitting a cpu rig?

[Entering Scary Drill Instructor mode: Toshiro Greyhawk puts on Campaign Hat (like Smokey the Bear), worst Drill Instructor scowl and says in a low menacing voice ...]
Just to reiterate what was mentioned above - since it seems to need reiterating - you REALLY want all your Base Support Skills - Engineering, Electronics, Mechanic, Navigation to Level V.
You especially want Engineering and Electronics to Level V.
NO - Level IV isn't good enough. You want Level V. They're only a Rank 1 skill for Frakk's sake.
Do it or you are just spinning your wheels while you chase your tail. ( Picture a dog on roller skates on a freshly waxed kitchen floor doing circles in one spot ...).
Seriously - do it. Stop whatever you are doing and get those two skills to Level V.
Nearly everything you put on your damn ship uses Power Grid and CPU. So you are just screwing yourself out of modules you could have if you don't have those two fully trained.
Now ... the point of all of the above is - we really mean it. This isn't a suggestion - this is something that if you don't do it - you're frakking stupid.
So - don't be frakking stupid. Get those skills up Capsuleer!!!!!
[Exit scary drill instructor mode].
The next thing you want to look at are your "Upgrades" skills. Shield Upgrades, Weapons Upgrades, Electronic Upgrades, Mining Laser Upgrades. These skills don't give you more CPU/PG but they cause the modules you fit that they cover to use LESS of it. As Benjamin Franklin would have said if he'd played EVE "A Power Grid Unit saved is a Power Grid Unit Gained."

Is that anything like "A wreck in hand is worth two frigs in a belt?"
Pushing for the Hulk is good advice, but the climb in skills to get from a Retriever to a Covetor requires a couple of long (for a new player) climbs to a couple of level 5 skills. You're in that Retriever for awhile. At least the Mining, Mining Barge and Astrogeology skills steadily improve your Retriever's output as you train them up.
I promise nothingÖ. --CCP Prism X |

Telling someone to skip Retriever and go straight to Hulk is ridiculous. Even with good learning skills it takes over a month of training to get into a Hulk, let alone properly fit it. What are they supposed to do, mine in an Osprey that entire time? |
