If you don't like having to buy a new medical clone every time you're podded, then don't get podded. 
Unless you're stuck in a bubble, under heavy lag or get caught in an AoE weapon, there is very little chance that your pod will get caught by hostiles with sensible piloting (ie spamming the warp to button while your ship goes pop).

Just to be clear, the cheapest clone for any SP over 900k costs $13M. If were to get podded without a clone do I lose all SP ?

You're misreading the clone attributes. Clone Grade Beta keeps 1.38mil SP and costs 40K ISK.
If you're podded without an up to date clone, you will lose 5% of the difference between your current SP and what your clone covered.
This SP will be lost from the skill with the most SP invested in it.
The SP loss is capped to 50% of that skill's total SP.

It most assuredly does not - you must be reading it wrong. A clone to cover 1.38m skillpoints costs 40,000 isk

Ok this makes me feel a lot better. Must have read the price vs. SP wrong. I was seriously floored at the prices I was thinking, lol.

As a matter of fact, CCP reduced the prices of all clones about 1-2 years ago. They used to be more expensive, particularly in the area of 5-10M skillpoints.
