So far 20-odd people have been confirmed casualties of the disease. Let's then assume that 1000 people have it world-wide (and that's assuming far more people have it than are on "record"):
That's between 1.538 and 1.667x10^-7% of people on the planet. Or 0.000001538-0.000001667% of the population. Is it really that bad?
So, and I hesitate to quote the Guide, but, "DON'T PANIC!" Just be careful and take some precautions. It's not that hard. Don't touch your eyes, nose, or mouth if you haven't washed your hands. And if you've come in contact with people who've coughed or sneezed on you, just wear a mask if you're that worried about it. Or wear one if you don't want to risk being contaminated.
If you've developed more severe symptoms and are worried about becoming a zombie, only you, and your local decapitator, know how to handle the situation.*
*Note that I don't condone decapitation and dismemberment, unless you really are a zombie, but if you are, you're probably not reading this.

Typical media spin on this Pig AIDs thing.
"Oh mah gawd, A virus has moved between countries! Subtype H1N1! ARGH!"
We have BBC Articles saying "40% of UK population at risk" or something. It just seems a little ridiculous to me that they're making people shet bricks over flu again.
There are 2 Confirmed cases in the UK, and then this number they keep throwing out. So far "152 probable deaths", IE - 152 people might die, but probably won't if they're supplied with meds and fluids. 20 people have actually died, but no doubt they were either incredibly young or substantially old and therefore at risk of normal flu, be it H1N1 or not.
But as some Tin-Foilers out there will say, this is how you control people. Keep the fear and make it look like the governments are saving everyone with their big Tamiflu stockpiles.
Considering people have been doubting their governments recently after all this economic fail - A lovely dose of overhyped H1N1 is just what the spin-doctor ordered, really.
Obviously if there is an announced pandemic though, people will probably panic. So... Lets see how it pans out - I'm willing to bet the entire thing blows over after the initial scare tactics, and suddenly everything becomes under control thanks to your wonderful government figures.

Also, F'nog, you're only using current figures. The thing about infectious diseases is that they tend to infect more people over time.
I'm not worried though. I live like a hermit most of the time and I sit far enough away from my work colleagues that they don't cough or sneeze on me. Unless one of my housemates gets it and snots all over my kitchenware, I feel safe. ____________________

Start the warnings once the death-toll hits 20 million, I'd barely call it a pandemic before that. It's a moderate epidemic at best right now, not the pandemic every news agency seems to be screaming about. And the fun thing is, normal flu medication works fairly well. It's just your own immune system that can't handle it very well.

Actually pandemic is a regional thing rather then a numbers thing, 20million people could be dead but if its based only in mexico its at most an epidemic.
A pandemic is basically most if not all of the world being infected which is true(even new zealand has a case)...... Furthermore, the reason its like this is because if you ever played the flash game pandemic 2 you would understand that it doesnt matter if you infect 1 person in each country, you just won based upon the fact that it cannot be closed off to just one area.

Could this be why the Torah and Koran arn't too keen on mixing Humans, swine and birds together in setlements.
They may have had a number of occasions of similar outbreaks dating back over the milenia that were eventually pinned down this mix being the plague root cause.
It's just a pity that those documents with specific details of the reasons why this combination should not happen, have been edited out as superflorous to the root message of the books.
just shows that there is more than just overhyped bigoted religious drivel written into those books and they were more of a historical / lifestyle guide for living in pretty hostile environmentally changing time.
Global warming at the end of the last iceage,(rising sea levels) the atlantic breaching the straigts of gibralta and mixing with the mederterainian fresh water sea, the flooding of the med into(what is now)the black sea. numerous earthquakes, the desertification of the north african forests, various insect plagues as they adapted to the changing enviroment. etc...
a lot of that has been squeezed into a few written records with many details lost to time, its only in the last few years they have been able to peice together some of the facts and find this lost history in the geology of Europe.

Shame that these words of wisdom only become apparant after the events have happened. Besides these books are full of endless crap so its innevitable that they will eventually appear to suggest ways of avoiding problems or predict their occurance. Floods and suchlike have been recorded by many civilisations and are quite common outside the Koran and Torah. No doubt thats where the authors of those books got the ideas in the first place. ----

Well, considering that the 1918 "Spanish Flu" Pandemic is estimated to have killed as many as 100 million people, and infected as much as half the human population on Earth...
I guess it all depends on how fatal and how contagious the Swine Flu is.

Madagascar is the only one ive been unable to infect, is it actually possible? lol
It's quite possible. Boats seem to go to Madagascar mostly from New Zealand and India, so if you manage to infect those you have a good chance. I've managed to do it with both a slow working parasitic strain (using high resistances, zero symptoms and rodent transmission. Took about 180 days for full infection and wipe) and a quick working virus (using sneezing&coughing as the quick transmitters to maximize spread before the first 10 day incubation period is over, and then selling off these once the disease is firmly entrenched in a multitude of countries. Took me about 70 days for full wipe, although I'm sure it could be done within 50 days judging by the high-scores). The important part is to never invest in drug resistances before you're fully entrenched worldwide (because it scares governments), and then when you have infected in every country you get it up to IV asap (as it really kicks up the lethality once you put in a few lethal symptoms). ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

Honestly what do you expect from a culture where a doctor would rather stuff you full of pills than tell you some sound advice on avoiding the thing to begin with? I weep for future generations where the immune system will be severly compromised after decades of doctors telling them to run to them when they have a runny nose. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

antibiotics
I have had doctor appointments with MD's (other than my usual) who have offered to give me antibiotics to treat a viral illness.
The very people that should be inhibiting the use of these drugs (because of all the terrible effects to a population by overuse) PUSHES the stuff. Might have something to do with that clock and pen and clipboard and poster and footstool and (insert whatever) drug company paraphernalia littered all over the Dr. office.

In a way it's similar to how you are told to wash your hands after taking a p*ss or a dump, yes it might sound disgusting by modern standards but our high levels of cleanliness have lead to weakened immune systems also.
