Forget the governments saying they'll be keeping copies of your phone transactions, they at least are warning you. Worry about the people you don't know who may watching you.

I didn't find it that fascinating. The way they 'paint it' makes it look as if getting such thing going is extremely easy and it's not. As for the GPS part? I highly doubt it works unless the cellphone itself has GPS and the spy software somehow gets the info from it and transmits it over to the spy.
Anyways, if you make a quick search you'll find that some of the tools they show on that video don't even work. The journalism could've done more research and bring some better facts to the table on the whole subject.

Or, you know, you could be using a cellphone that doesn't TRY to be a "playstation/mediaplayer/organizer/laptop" and is just what it's supposed to be (a cellphone and nothing more), and make this particular type of "spying" impossible ? Of course, OTHER types of "spying" would be possible, but then again, they wouldn't come so cheap nor be so hard to detect.

Well even if you don't have GPS they can get an 'idea' of where you are, since the cell phones have to connect to a tower.
Police can use that information to put a person near a crime scene.

I'm aware of that and I believe it's done using 3 towers, actually. (as you can only have an area unless you got a minimum of 3 points) But you're missing the key word here: access. You won't get access to such information by just installing an application on a cellphone. It doesn't works like that.

Nah, one of the things they pointed out is that you need access to the cell phone itself. Now I haven't felt the hands of strangers in my pants pocket so I'm pretty sure I'm safe. In the case of that family it was probably some kids that broke into the house and installed the code after hearing about it from some place like 4chan or something, then started going to far even after the family changed #'s.
As for cell phone towers, I believe you are just bounced from one to the next. What the other means by the law enforcement tracking you is that if you made a call within the crime area they can contact your phone company and they will provide info that your call started at tower 23 or something like that.

The government has been able to do this for about a decade now. I'm not surprised that private individuals would also be able to do so now. Not that I much care. If someone wants to over here me and my friend talk about the finer points of women's breast to brains ratio then they're more than welcome.
