Hi, I'm just getting back into the game after a 2 year break and i never did much mining before. I've skilled up and got me a small mining barge and a hauler (Iteron 3 i think). I've mined the 1.0 areas no problems but i bought a secure container for anchoring near an asteroid belt only to find i can't use in >0.7 space (i use the jettison method at the moment with the risk of ore being stolen). Because I'd bought the container and trained the skill i just got thinking would 0.6 mining be better, so off i trots to check things out only to find some npc pirates waiting for me :(
So my questions are is it suitable to use a small mining barge in 0.6 and how can i deal with the pirates? I can carry a single drone i believe 5m2 would a combat drone be able to protect me? Once anchored and protected would the pirates attack the container?
Thanks

NPCs do not attack anchored objects.
If the system you're in has a reasonable number of belts (say 15 or less), you might consider going through the system and killing every npc, giving you some free time to mine before they respawn. You can also ask in local if people are mining and whether they'll help you out.
The latter suggestion might attract unscrupulous types, though.

A retreiver with 5 sm drones can mine in .5 and up with no problems, just pop the rats when they spawn.
However, mining into that container is going to get old really fast when you realise you are filling it in just a couple cycles of your miners. --------------------------------------------

The best way to deal with NPC pirates in any mining barge is with drones. I highly recommend getting into a Retriever as soon as possible, which would allow you to operate up to five drones. I use five Type 2 Light Scout drones and they can tear through NPC pirates in seconds.
That, or get a buddy who doesn't mind hanging around in a ship fitted for combat. His presence would also help to deter can flippers.

Ok thanks for the replies. I'll get some drone training done and save for the medium barge then go kick some butt

Hi Terry,
I mine in a Retriever although sadly I am not able to use Tech II Drones. So, I pack 2 x Hammerhead I's and a little scout drone. They are *decent* at killing rats in 0.5+ but sometimes things can get a bit sketchy. Anyways, what I do is I use one account to mine with the Retriever, I jettison the cargo into a can and keep putting the Ore into the can.
I then use my other account which is a Badger MkII to sit there and loot the Ore from the can, therefore not getting can flipped.. I usually leave just a little bit of ore in there though so the can doesn't disappear.
Anyways, when the rats come (usually 3 will come with some serious missle power :( ) my drones can usually do the job but sometimes they attack my Badger (which is fine because it has decent shields) but sometimes they also attack my Retriever... the Retriever is like paper... But anyways, usually my drones kill them before either ship has their shields all the way down, but a good thing to do is align yourself to a station or wherever, so if things happen to get sketchy, warp out as fast as possible.
Hope this helps a little!
Cheers

Hi,
Drone 4 should be no more than 2 days (for someone with NO drone skills) so get that ASAP!
Then look at geting to a Retriever, ASAP. Use Strip Miner I's and fill it up. Ideally you want to look at getting into an Exhumer for mining - the difference is Phenomenal!!!
Be careful about jetcanning... I'd mine into the Secure can and get your Alt to take from the secure can...
Apart from that your definitely on the right track!
PS: If you Really want to get easy rat kills (good to suppliment your mining income) then get Dornes 5, Drone interfacing 4 and the other drone xxx skills to 4. It will make your drones harder to hit, they do more damage, they get better range..
Plus if you get T2 Small dornes, they hit with the same effect as T1 medium drones!

Just to add: use drones!
Mining in a Retriever with no booster can get hairy if you don't manually send out your drones the instant NPC pirates (rats) appear and are in range, and there are like four of them. I use 4 drones, and haven't had any other problems mining in down to 0.5 systems.
A Hulk will support two flights of drones, 5 mining drones and 5 light combat drones for the rats, of course you can only have one flight out at a time.

Just to let you know, 5 light drones will do more damage than 2 mediums and 1 light, and take the same amount of drone bay space/bandwidth. And even if you only have the Drones skill trained to level 3, since all of the rats you'll find in high-sec are frigates & destroyers, chances are that the mediums will have a trouble hitting them properly so in fact you'd probably be better off with 3 light drones than your two mediums.
But yes - drones! Drone skills are very useful in general on any ships that can use them, and all battlecruisers and battleships can field at least 5 light drones so it can almost be considered a "support skill" that improves your capabilities with a wide range of ships. With five Tech 2 light drones and a few levels of Drone Interfacing, you'd be killing any high-sec rats in mere seconds (1-3 volleys from the drones). Even with much lower skills the NPCs shouldn't give you much problem.

Edited by: It''Pannaih on 30/04/2009 08:00:35 here my 2 peso - check if there is a cruiser mining vessel for your race, like the Osprey for Caldari ( Cruisers Overview). helps when waiting for the Retriever and is much stronger than the Bantam or Navitas - someone stated above to kill all rats and then having some time to mine - I believe that is not correct. respawn varies, I sometimes have rats popping on me every 5 mins and then nothing for an hour. - if you didn't do yet, get yourself some named miners. longer range and more volume per cycle are nice - if you have a slow ship, align it to a station when starting to mine. semi insta warp is nice
I hope mining doesn't bore you
fly safe! :)

T2 drones should take care of your problem. they are the best protection for a barge, outside of an escort. _____________________ *warp drive acti...wait, where are we going?*
