Lately I've been having a few problems with Vagabonds..
I figure if a Vaga gets into Scram range, the HAM drake wins without problem, but the drastically superior speed of the vaga stops the drake from having a chance of getting in Scram range. If the Vaga stays at Disrupter range, it can disengage, speed out of range and escape.
Is there any tactic a drake can use to take down a vaga, Short of bringing a friend with a cloak and a scram?

P.S.: Most ships can't catch a well piloted Vagabond. Bring a friend.

Edited by: Lilith Velkor on 29/04/2009 00:16:28 I'm having the opposite problem, these stupidly overtanked drakes cant be killed by my vaga, and I'm ultimately driven off by their missiles.
Is there any tactic a vaga can use to take down a drake, short of bringing a friend in a battleship?
Fun aside, you're using the wrong missiles, you want HMLs.

As a former vaga pilot, there were very few ships that I won't or tend to not engage.
Among them, the Curse/Pilgrim, Raven, and Drake. I'd usually engage a raven, but cruise missile damage hurts a ton.

If you are in this situation, at least do a little bit of manual piloting to see if you can catch him. Assuming that he has his orbit set to about 22 km and you have a MWD+web+scram (2 reasonably valid points), your best chance of catching him in scram range is to use his orbit against him. Try burning towards an arbitraty point in space. He will have to pulse his MWD to keep you pointed. When he does this, reverse your direction towards him when his speed peaks and his orbit is favorable to you. Overload your scram and web and see what happens. Its not a garaunteed catch but it will give you something to do while he is whittling away at your shields.

Now you have me curious. Can a Drake actually reverse direction faster than a Vagabond can correct its orbit? Previously, I would have said "No way," but you make it sound like a semi-viable tactic.

While caldari ships are indeed surprisingly agile compared to minmatar ones, in general the answer is no.
While this is a perfectly viable tactic in a cruiser, a battlecruiser doesnt turn fast enough. Might be able to make it work if the Drake is nanoed, but I doubt it.
On the other hand, there are a lot of situations where you cant simply "orbit" in a vagabond but have to maneuver manually (in fact, you'll do this most of the time), and then its down to your ability to fool the opponent into a movement vector that plays into your hands, so if he's not really smart about his movements you might pull it off.

Slowly approach gate and wait for bump attempt. Or does the average Vaga not fall for that anymore?

In belts you can move towards asteroid cluster and wait untill the vaga bumps into them, and then mwd towards vaga and hope he is stuck long enough. ---------------------------------------------
