I say Kestrel is the best, but the Merlin is easier to fit.

Kestrel is the best Caldari Frigate...hands down..
Merlin would be much better if it was all guns....In fact, it would **** if it was all guns....

You could T2 fit about half a dozen Merlins for the cost of one of those and it does basically the same thing.
Kessie is an all around good frig. It has a nice layout, nice cargo, etc. It might not tank as well as a Merlin, but you will definately enjoy it.

Hookbill hasn't been a Merlin copy for a while now. It has a 10% per level increase in shield capacity now. It's awesome! Though that doesn't justify the near-AF price you pay (and a Harpy is pure ownage by comparison).
That said, Merlin is the best T1 frig the Caldari have. Fit a couple of Electrons, rocket launchers, AB, 2 point web and Medium shield extender (need 2 MAPCs for that) and you'll own most other T1 frigs in the game, including most Rifters and especially the Incursus. Kestrel has nice DPS but no tank whatsoever.

Message to the OP: NEVER FIT ROCKETS EVER! They are a BAD weapon system. If you can't make standard launchers fit, rework your setup.
AB + Standard > MWD + Rockets IMO

Hi. I am brand new and trying to learn. Not directing this just at you, but folks, I have no clue what most of the abbreviations mean.

Hi. I am brand new and trying to learn. Not directing this just at you, but folks, I have no clue what most of the abbreviations mean.
That sentence means:
"In relation to Merlin fits, having a Afterburner and Standard Missile Launcers fitted is superior to having a Micro Warpdrive and Rocket launchers fitted".
There's reasons why he said it, without getting excessively technical, they are:
Standard Missiles have a longer range than Rockets do, and in a frigate, it's often better to outrange your opponenets so that they can't hit you while you hit them. This is called range-tanking.
A Afterburner will increase your ship's speed while it's on, just like the package says. a Micro Warpdrive will too, to a much greater extent - though a Micro Warpdrive will also make you 500% easier to hit, as it increases your "signature" by that much when on. One of it's drawbacks for the vastly increased speed.
So, thhe Afterburner/Standard mMissiles combo makes it a lot easier to stay out of your enemy's range, while still being able to hit him. Rockets arew SHORT-Range, and dbasically using them will nullify any advantage that the MWD/AB will give you, since you have no choice but to get into your opponent's weapon range in order to use 'em.
On a Merlin, you can't fit a MWD AND Standard Missiles without giving something up - the ship's limitations on CPU and Powergrid won't allow it.
Hope that clears it up a bit.
