i'm soon switching from a phoon to a mealstrom for lvl 4s whe i get T2 large guns(a fewmore days left) and i'm wondering if i should go for a single large shile dbooster or a pair of small b or c type pitthi bosters --------------------------------------------- Playing minmatar is "like going down a flight of stairs in a office chair firing an Uzi". |

I remember chasing down this rabbit hole myself, and coming out with an XL fitted Mael. I don't recall why, but I *think* it was because it let me fit an extra TC.

My main flies the Maelstrom when doing missions. So far I have only used a xl sized booster. In nearly every mission you only need burst shield boosting. A perma running setup looks nice and comfy but occasionally you need a bit extra unless you like warping out. Only an XL or more expensive setups can give that. A large booster might be good enough given good skills, but why go with large when an XL booster fits just fine. Besides you might screw up big time and get massive aggro. Then a large booster will not be able to save you. The XL booster just might while you desperately try to kill that last annoying scrambling frig. Leaving you with a cap reserve that has been sucked empty but with a ship that still flies instead of being a wreck.
A pair of shield boosters has the added disadvantage of using two medslots. One of which could be used for a more sensible module like a target painter, tracking computer, sensor booster or perhaps an afterburner.

I've found that a Large shield booster and 2-3 hardeners is sufficient for almost all missions (even the Extravaganza bonus room), and if you pull too much aggro it just delays the time you need before you have to warp out. If you can fit it I say go for it, because the cap usage:shield boost ratio is negligible.
This is of course with me at almost all level 5 relevant skills (including BS V), but you have nothing to worry about as long as you don't pull the entire room.

I also suggest using an XL-booster. The shield boost amplifier along with the bonus to shield boost amount bonus is a) a bonus to burst-boost and b) a cap saving bonus.
Those 2 shieldbooster setups usually are perma-repping setups. And, seeing as the Maelstrom is certainly not an AFK boat you can aswell do the extra clicks to manage your tank. And the added "oh ****!-proofness, pointed out by another poster, is also a plus. Plus it costs a lot less.
If it's your first Mael, don't fit it with expensive faction mods. When you feel well in the boat and know what faction mods really give you an improvement in flying the ship how you like to fly it you can still put on some faction mods. Only then, you know why exactly you have them Real men do it the hard way: fly Minmatar! |

I started out with an x-large, and it worked fine. When I got more skills and experience with the ship I switched over to dual pithi smalls. I prefer the dual smalls, it's more cap-friendly. Also, 80% or more of the time I either have both boosters off, or I'm only running one. Rarely do I need to kick in the second booster.

Yeah, but it's that 20% of the time that makes me really hesitant to give up the second mid slot. :-/

I've always found that Large SB + Amp + 3 (or 4 hardeners on high DPS missions) was plenty.
Dual pithi setups are nice, but the mael doesn't have a reason to be so cap-stable, unless you ambit rig it and use AC's, then you need the dual smalls.
When you move into the Vargur though, you'll want to use a pithi c or b type medium SB. Let's you micro-manage your wreck-ball more effectively without worrying about tank ;).

a large booster and 3/4 hardeners 0/1 boost amps is sufficent tank on a raven, so on a mael with the shield boost bonus it should be cake.

Edited by: The Djego on 02/05/2009 10:09:00 Dual Phiti B here, works out realy nicely(even for AE Bonus).
Usely I use 2x Small Booster, T2 Amp, 2x T2 Invus and a Solifier Rig what gives you in 95% of the possible Missions enught tank(with BS 4 in my case).
Biggest advantage is you donŠt need any kind of cap mods(including rigs, where I use 2 T2 tracking rigs) and can use all your slots for Tracking/Damage. Also it is very relaxed and more lag frindly, what can be a realy big advantage sometimes. ---- Nerf Tank - Boost Gank!
