Hey ppl, i've been playing eve for around 4-5 months now as a carebear. However i recently began to become weiry of the whole thing, i spent all that time training towards flying a hulk & with only a couple of weeks training left decided to halt training and focus on 0.4-0.0 piracy. As i am lacking in PvP skills i decided to use an Incursus fitted with a AB and a Overdrive and so use speed to overcome my targets. This is all well and good if i could actually find ANY targets. I spent two days in 0.4-0.0 space searching high and low and didnt spot a single miner or hauler the whole time, only PvP heads, and lets face it you aint going to beat those guys in an incursus. So..can anyone give me any tips on finding miners, or maybe an in depth tutorial on how to use the scanner? Any help to get my career as a off the ground would be great!

So it isn't that you are not finding targets - they just happen to have guns and the ability to fight back so you are not engaging. May I suggest a new fitting - put some balls in the low slots and engage something that can actually fight back.

This, to an extent. Try finding other tech1 frigates and possibly cruisers to attack, don't restrict yourself to non-combats.
However the concept of attacking something with a 99% chance of failure is just dying for the sake of it. I'm not going to go charging down, say, an Ishtar in a Kestrel. There is a point where chosing not to engage a target is intelligence and not cowardice - but refusing to attack any sort of combat ship most definately falls under the latter.
Get a good idea of what you can beat.

I'm still where the OP is, although getting wee bit more experience. A started this character to learn PvP and have fun. Killing stuff that can't fight back isn't PvP, it's more like a boring soccer penalty shoot out. In my extremely limited experience new players in combat ships can shoot back, but get kindof paralyzed and wont know how, so the risk, while real, is limited. And don't be afraid to lose ships - reading blogs of pirates of fame and (hopefully) fortune you realize they too lose ships. You'll lose yours - unless of course you only go for **** that can't shoot back.

Speaking of blogs, someone showed me this one:

It is probably the greatest thing I have ever read and taught me how to pirate like an all-star. It is the best Eve pirate resource on the entire internet and I would really strongly recommend that everyone read it. ----- The Python Cartel - My Pirate Blog |

this is how i choose targets:
1. pick a ship like "drakes" or "orcas" 2. sit outside a station like amarr or rens 3. when that ship type undocks roll a dice 4. if even go to war, if odd they get a free pass

1. Learn the fundamentals of Factional Warfare. 2. Do not join Factional Warfare. 3. Travel to a Factional Warfare region. 4. ??? 5. Profit.
A morally reprehensible former CSM on Lana Torrin's CSM list made a game of gaining FW rank with no actual effort. Find players such as this one that are merely working defensive complexes and make them work for it. I have personally undertaken this activity with satisfying results.

I'm not sure this is great advice for someone flying solo. I can't say I ever see FW pilots that aren't part of a 5 to 50 ship blob. ----- The Python Cartel - My Pirate Blog |

It is challenging beyond the normal limits of small gang warfare so I can see your point. However, it is a brutal school in the use of the directional scanner, character assessment in local and understanding your potential target's ship and potential ability. It is sometimes exceedingly comical as well.
