A while back I printed out a wonderful table that showed the scan strengths of Deep space probes/core probes relative to the size of the bubbles you were attempting to use them for.
What I'm looking for now is an updated version of that table (since DS probes got nerfed a patch or so ago) and hopefully a listing of the strengths of the faction variants along with them. TIA for any info you can send my way...

You can simply answer your question yourself. Do show info on a Core probe, and Show info on a DS probe.
DS probe : BIG range, low scan str. Core probe, low range, best scan str.

I launch 4 Core probes in quick succession, and then cloak.
As you drag a direction arrow from the intial probe, you'll get another probe, then another, do this until you have your four probes.Put them at 8-16-32 AU depending on the size of the system.
Hit analyze and you've got the whole system covered, and ready to either recall them and go to another system or proceed with pinning down your found signatures.
Since the DS probes were nerfed, no reason to train up Astrometrics V for them, really.

Except you're missing the part where strength is modified by range.
At any given range, core probes and deep space probes have the exact same scan strength. The only difference is that deep space probes can find ships, and have a much larger max range (And a larger min range).
However, because DSTs start at 8 AU and go up from there, they're unable to scan anything down.

I'd recommend combat probes, to be honest. All non-faction (faction gives a flat bonus across the board) probes have the same strength at any given range (ie, at 16au the stength of core, combat, and deep space probes are all identical). However, while the long range of the DSP is theoretically nice, the high minimum range makes them fairly pointless for doing anything other than cracking deep safes. The combat probe has double the range coverage of the core probe (double max and double min); the minimum range is still small enough to make them very useable, and the increased maximum is a nice bonus. More to the point, though, the combat probes allow you to scan anything, should you choose, whereas the core probes can only scan exploration content. The only reason not to use them, in my opinion, is if you are flying a combat ship with room only for a core probe launcher, which can only use core probes.
TL;DR Summary: * If you use an expanded launcher, use combat probes * If you use a core launcher, you have no choice but to use core probes * Assuming the cost is acceptable, use the faction variants of the above * Never use DSPs unless you are trying to scan a deep safe

Ok take a look at this:

I'd like to know the new relative strengths at the various ranges as shown in this table. As you can see from this prenerf table, you'd have never used core or combat probes to hunt for sites until you hit 2 au (The DS probes were hands down the strongest in that range). I want to know specifically if anyone knows numeric strength data on all probes at all ranges at the present time.

All probes have exactly the same strength at all ranges now, except Sisters Core and Combat which are 10% higher. Sisters DS are pretty worthless.
The values in that table are only correct for whatever that persons skills are... and also seem to be the rounded values displayed in game, and not more accurate calculated values.
But yes, DSP were the be-all and end-all of probes before the nerf. Now they're pretty useless. For the "max skills & implants" brigade - these days, there is no reason to use cores ever. Sisters Combats will find anything and everything.
Interesting times await... |
