Might not be in the right topic, but I am looking to purchase an over the ear headset/mic to replace my dumb Logitechs. I don't mind spending $60-130 as long as they are worth it. I figured that a few of you might have an opinion and could save me some disappointment.

Sennheiser is probably the best if you need a mic.
These are very nice, I've had a set for around 2 years (well, I have a set of PC161's, but they don't make those anymore) and the only reason I don't use them for headphones anymore is that I got myself a better pair (Grado SR225). I still use the mic though.

Are you talking about the $199 sennheisers? Or some other model in mind? Yeah.. the Logitech Clear Chat Pros slide right off my head as soon as I move my head to look down at anything.. Lame. What about Razor Headsets?

A quick check of Newegg.com showed priced Sennheiser models ranging from $17.99 to $139.99.
I would recommend, if keeping the stuff on your ears is a priority, the Sennheiser PC141. I use a PC156 which works great, but have used the PC141 before. Microphone quality is really good on both, and the sound quality is fantastic on the PC156 for a computer headset, and good on the PC141.
I had a coupon and there was a sale so I paid a lot less than $139.99 for my PC156 though. ACSG Open Recruitment- AU/NZ/AsiaPac ACSG Employment! |

I was looking for a cheap set of headphones with boom mic for when I started an alt in fw and found these for $21 at my local wal-mart. Sound quality is actually quite excellent with booming bass, understandable midrange and clear highs plus noone ever had any issues understanding me when I needed to communicate using eve voice in a gang. And this is coming from a Bose Quietcomfort 2 owner who is royaly spoiled on superb sound quality from headphones.

The Koss SB45 was recommended to me by a friend, I gotta say i love it. Only broke once in the last 2 years, and got it quickly replaced through their support.
See the newegg link here
Great for VOIP and vent, I also like listening to music with them.
Only downside is theres no volume control, but that dosent make these bad. ----- Are you a [SERVICE] Provider?

I had a older Koss set (SB35 maybe?) that was really good. Excellent mic quality and the best comfort I'd ever had in a headphone set. My 3 year old son broke them so I got a SB40 and the mic was utter crap on it. Now I'm trying out a TekNmotion set. Pretty cheap and so far the mic quality is good but they're not so comfy. First day I've had em.

I can only recommend what I'm using so, Steelseries 5H. The mic can be retracted back into the headset when not in use and both in and out sound quality is good. No complains about it so far.
(Some people complain that it lacks bass, which is true.)

I second that, I have the 5H v.2 and you definetely won't have them slipping off. They stay put, but unlike the Sennheisers I took back in favor of these, don't crush your head.

I've used Icemats and the Sennheisser, using a pair of 171s and they work excellent, for around 60 bucks and the best pair of headphones I've worn that didn't cost 300 bucks.

I have the Turtle Beach Ak-r8, and i have had them for the past 2 years and best set of headphones / mic you can buy.
If by chance you dont like having a Mic in your face, the Amp has a built in Mic with just as good quality as the mic in your mouth and nothing but crystal clear sound.

Let me know aswell! Was my first choice, but i went for a Creative Fatality instead. Which is actually quite good, to be honest.

OK... So I got my Sennheiser PC 350s today..Plugged em in and I have to say.. meh. Just not that impressed. I want to be. They are made pro grade, however if their sound range where a T-shirt size, it would be Extra Medium. :[ Don't get me wrong. They are some of the best constructed headsets I have seen around. To me, the audio sounded thin and lacking bass range. I played with the levels and all that and it just didn't sound right. I played some music and while the music was Very clear over certain freqs. It just didn't seem that this clarity extended into the lower ranges. They felt comfy on my head, and I will play around with them a bit more before I send them back to Amazon.
But being compulsive and very singular in my drive to find a better headset, I set off for Best Buy.. I picked up a pair of Plantronic Gamecon 777s. OK.. to me at first glance these look to be cheaper in design. I got home plugged em in and was impressed. The headset seemed to have much more depth to them than the PC 350s.. Maybe under the right conditions (super tweakable soundcard) the 350s might perform better, but I have to say the 777s sound better. Not only that, the 350s cost about $141 before tax and I picked up the 777s for $89..
The Plantronics sounded great with music too! I listened to a bit of everything. From Primus, T.I., Mastadon, Peaches, Anthrax, Ween, Weezer, Converge, Pink Floyd... these babys sound live.
To be honest, I have not had a chance to check out the mic on either headset. But.. who cares if the mic sounds great if the Cans sound like ****? I am not saying that the 350s sound that way, but compared to the cheaper 777s, I don't think its much of a contest.
Oh and the 777s will not slide off your head either.
I will play around with both tonight and see if there is any saving the 350s from a return trip.

Sennheiser is great, but you might want to look at the SteelSound V5 USB. It has a built in USB soundcard or the option to hook it up to your own sound card. Its quality is great, happy user since 2006.

So I the Sennheinsers are on their way back home and I have been playing around with the Plantronics 777 game con and also picked up the Creative Fatality headset to see if there was much of a difference. I like the way the Fatality headset fits a bit better than the 777s, but I think I like the overall sound of the 777 a bit more. And that's about all the ones locally that I can do a side-by-side. I guess I could try the Razer Carcharias, but I think it will be just more of the same. I think all of the various headsets are good, a lot just comes down to taste. I do like the convience of the USB connection, but I know its not too big a deal. The Turtle Beach Headset that someone mentioned a few posts ago seem pretty cool. Its just too bad that you have to send away for them in order to test them out. Not very many stores carry many upper end headsets.

Edited by: Shurrurru on 09/05/2009 08:08:24 I've bought a lot of headsets in the past, spending lots of money and a little money at a time. The only time I ever noticed a massive difference in brand quality was Sennheiser vs everything else. I'm currently using a junk Chinese brand I bought at a market and they're better than the expensive noise-cancelling headset I bought before.
Some things to look for are the specs.. they'll vary from headset to headset but generally:
Frequency Response: 20-20k is what the human ear can hear and will also be what many cheaper headsets range at. Try and find a headset that is 18-22k or better (lower number then higher number). There's a bit more to frequency response but I don't realy understand it and a 20-20k may work just fine. My current headset is 20-20k because I didn't have much choice in selection and I wanted something cheap. Make sure you don't go above 20 or under 20k, though.
Sensitivity: Most seem to be between 90 and 105db. I prefer a headset that is 102db or more, most of the websites I've checked suggest something over 100.
I don't know much about Impedence but my understanding is that more ohms is better.
Headsets are one of those scary hit-or-miss things. Some of my best headsets have been garbage brands and some of my worst have been good brands (Creative, Logitech). I'd rather buy a new headset every 4 months for $25 than get a really good one that'l last me 1-2 years because I have a tendency to drop things. If you're okay with returning things buy from a store who has a solid return policy and just test until you get a set that are suitable.
Edit: Also, anything marketed as a "gaming" headset will probably be more expensive and more or less the same specs. If you're using it for voice comms there's not a lot of stuff a gaming headset is going to do for you anyway - even if it has special extra features.
Also I forgot to mention one of the most important features is comfort. I prefer a cloth ear cover rather than the soft plastic / vinyl type thing many of the larger headsets use. I find the soft plastic causes my ears to sweat and becomes very uncomfortable during extended gaming sessions. They often fit better though and enable you to ignore your girlfriend's soap operas.
