Just wanted to ask you guys a question. I will be going to boot for the United States Marine Corps in June. I plan on unsubscribing over that time, for obvious reasons, but when I get back, I fully intend to play this game. However, I'm having doubts about it. I'm not sure if I will really have the time, or the ability to play this game. So my question is, in your experience, how has it been playing the game, or were you able at all, during your service in the military?

I'm out now, but I played while I was in (Active duty, US Army) - when you're in garrison, it makes a good, cheap entertainment. The only issues will be when you're deployed/in the field - and I've yet to find a corp that wasn't understanding about issues raised by those situations. ---------------- Ambulation Answers

I've had plenty of .mil in my corp before, and they were unable to play while on deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan due to some serious bandwidth issues/lag issues. Everyone was understanding and we never really minded waiting until they were back from deployment.

Good luck being property of the government. I got screwed by our wonderful military and have nothing to show for it.
As for EVE and the military, make sure you don't have to deal with crippling depression, suicidal thoughts, and financial hardships (because anything they said about money was a cold hearted lie). If all that is good to go, then EVE should be just fine. Just remember, it's a frakking game, not the military. So don't become another one of those militaristic douche-bags always talking about the Corps and all that bull****. You never know when you might be bringing up a horribly dark time for someone else and ruining their relaxing game time.
And sound like a tool. --- For great justice. Or something.

Edited by: Emperor Cheney on 06/05/2009 06:40:49 I'm a marine reservist in real life, and like all reservists these days I've spent a lot of time on active duty. Also have a lot of friends in active duty.
Barracks life, you will have spare time. Even being "boot" you will have spare time when not in the field. Playing an MMO will get you made fun of, but just make sure to keep yourself in shape and who cares. As a junior marine, you will get made fun of anyway. Best of luck in boot.
edit to add: to be clear to all those who don't know, being "boot" means a fresh marine who just joined the unit. It does not mean in boot camp. Not a lot of time for MMO's in boot camp.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 06/05/2009 07:04:20 When I was at Benning I had yet to subscribe to Eve. I was subscribed to DAoC though and could never connect to it. Couldn't connect to any online game actually, and the internet connection in general was abominable. I'm assuming that this was a problem isolated in Olson Hall though, since nobody lives in that place permanently. Hard to imagine that they'd tolerate that level of internet unreliability across the entire base, considering how much official military business is done online.
Had I been able to connect I would have had time to play on the weekends generally, and every once in a while during the week. I was there for school so there was always a lot of official stuff I had to take back to the room with me during the garrison periods to work on, which would of course have prevented me from playing games most of the time.

We had a guy in my old corp who played from a British Army base in Africa somewhere.
He would log on to check skills and production jobs every once in a while.
Don't expect to play huge fleet battles, but you can probably still keep up with friends and do a fair bit of skill training whilst you are on deployment.

if connections are so bad in some of the garrisons, cant you just get an umts usb modem and a cheap plan and use your own laptop?
this works great for me when on business travel. although fairly expensive outside the country that you have the mobile internet plan in.
also doubt that you have umts in iraq or afghanistan :D

PLENTY of down time to screw off in the Marine Corps.... trust me. Most guys spend it drinking, though.

I'd recommend unsubscribing for bootcamp. During bootcamp they'll make SURE that you don't have time to play games. And your access to the outside world during your "brainwashing" (because that's what it is essentially. How much depends on which country, service branch and who the commanding officer is and how aware you are of what they're doing) will be cut off. Once you're back in connection to the real world, evaluate how much time you have. When I did my military service I had decent amount of time left for r&r once basic training was done. It does depend on how much personal gear they allow you to have and what kind of connection that's available. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

I've known a couple of people who are RL military and game. The main complaints I hear from them seem to be about the quality of connection available, especially while overseas. I guess it's less bad for an MMO than it would be for an FPS or whatever.

We get requests from deployed members of various armed forces to send them a copy of EVE so i suggest you burn it on a DVD before you go anywhere. I'm assuming they mainly log in to catch up and do some skill training more than actual game play but that may vary with what kind of internet access they have.

Yeah I play alot I like eve for the fact that when I get back its still the same game old friends are still easy to find and skill training progression and all those researches and buy orders and sell orders queued up are finally done. Makes Battleship V and other above rank 8 skills to V a non issue.
Just find a corp that would understand your situation and you should be good to go for the most part.
However Dissapearing 9 months at a time can be a real kicker.

I'm in the Navy and we deploy quite a bit. I'm still fairly new at Eve, but I have played other MMO's and it can be quite a pain to keep an account going. With Eve I have a laptop and every port we hit I look for an internet cafe just to keep my training going and play what I can. Most military bases I have seen throughout the world, no matter what service they are affiliated with, have internet anymore. It's a moral and welfare issue. It's almost a personal right anymore to be able to E-mail letters home. I am fairly certian that no matter what base you get stationed at in this day and age you will be able to get at least a 52k dial up connection if not way better.
I would not suspend your account during boot camp, but I would make sure you put some rediculously long training in right as you leave. you probably will still have some lost time due to the 2 months of boot camp, but hey, it would still be a great way to get some month long training done.
Eve is very playable in the miltary. Much more so than other MMO's IMO...

US navy here from 95-02
youre probably not going to have the desire or time to play for at least the 1st year of your enlistment. Youre in boot for a few months then AIT for a couple months, then you go to A school (hopefully) for a few months.
Your MOS is going to determine alot of how much, if any, free time you have. If you got into an airwing youre golden. Going to be working alot with sailors and youre not going to be as hardcore as the normal marines. If youre a groundpounder though, youre not going to have much free time at all.

With the marines for 4 years (as a navy corpsman) For the first year doubt you will be able to play just because you're moving all over the place and training. (Depends on what MOS they choose for you) After you finally get to your permanent duty station. (assuming it's in the US) yeah you can play. Won't be able to play crazy hours, unless you have a nondeployable MOS in which your job will be almost 9-5ish. But you can play. I knew tons of guys that played WOW together after work. Also during holidays you get like 5 days off (least we did at pendleton). So you can make up for lost time if you so chose. But lol I wouldnt be worried about EVE going in I'd be worried about getting into shape and growing thicker skin real quick. _________________________

if you have time for an MMO while in boot camp you need to check any idea you had about joining a real army.

While I didn't start playing MMOs until after I got out of the army in 2000, buddies of mine were avid EQ players. As many above have said, in garrison there is ample time to play, but little to none while deployed or there aren't adequate facilities to support MMO play. Also don't plan on doing anything with an MMO during boot, when I was at Benning, we got to watch TV one day, for Nixon's funeral, and we didn't get to read newspapers until after O.J. killed his wife and only then on Sundays.

I am active duty AF and am currently deployed in Iraq.
I am working the in international zone, and I am currently sitting at work on the forums... lol...
On top of that, I have plenty of time off even working 12 hour shifts to play...
Granted I have not been playing because my laptop died but the first 5 months of my deployment I was playing EVE on my laptop. The net here is not the fastest but its fast enough to play and do missions and some pvp depending on the time your playing.
I know for a fact that many of my other teammates also play WoW on a daily basis and are able to do their lame ass raids even... so you should be fine. Now I dont know about the Jarheads deal but... AF wise (and my job is no easier then Army Infantry or MP's) its doable...
