Olga Chukarin	Posted - 2009.05.08 20:36:00 - [1] For those that dont yet know, Chain Mining is the new craze in eve. Chain Mining allows you to mine ore and ship it to a station without wasting time warping between the belt and a station with you hauler. Basically this is how chain mining works. You have your mining ship, preferably a hulk but if you cant fly a hulk use a mining barge or battleship. Pitch it in the middle of the belt, and mine. Drop your ore in a jet can. Now 2000m from your mining ship (its 2k not 2.5k to account for the distance the dropped can can appear from your ship) you park an alt in another ship. Any ship will do, even a starter frigate. The alt is parked 2k away towards the nearest station. You then park another alt 2k away from the first alt, in a line towards the station, and keep parking additional alts until you have an alt within docking range of the station. The last ship in the line should be a high m3 hauler. If you have a friend, have him fly the hauler and start parking alts from the station, you mine and park alts from the belt, and meet in the middle. You might also want to park an orca in the belt for mining bonuses The setup is something like this: M - miner H - hauler a - alt v - veldspar S - station o - orca o vMaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaHS To chain mine, simply drop the can of ore with the miner and pick it up with the first alt, jettison with that alt and pick up with the second alt, jet can it with that alt and pick up with the third ect, until you get to the hauler. When your hauler is full, dock, unload, undock. If you find a belt with a station, say, 10000000km away, then you will need 5000 alts to chain it all the way. 5000 alts costs 150 bill isks per 30 days in plexes. Selling veldspar at 10 isk per unit you will need to mine 15 bill units of veldspar a month to break even, or 500 million units of veldspar per day.

However, I believe with good organisation on the miner's behalf and maybe some help from tractor beams, it'd be possible to know where each of these grids are and where you need to go to get back on grid and close enough to get the next can. So, assuming a grid size of 500km... if you were to find a belt 10000000km away from a station, you would only need to track about 20,000 of these grids.

Actually if you are working with 20 Mil or a bit more alts you could mine out every veldspar belt soon after downtime. With that monopoly on veldspar it could be possible to raise the price to 100 ISK per unit, so the investment in plexes will repay faster. Nevertheless: Great idea! You simply place a hauler at each grid edge, when full, it crosses the grid and drops out cans again - returning to the original grid.
