OK so I have a Merlin. I ask an agent for a mission and am told to deliver cargo that WAY exceeds what I can carry, even with expanded cargo container.
This has happened twice. 1st time, it was my first and only level II agent so I thought "hmmm maybe this is the game telling me I have to buy an indi." Then it happened with a level 1, -5 quality agent.
Frustrating to lose standing with agents for not taking missions you can't possibly complete. I was about to buy an indi until I saw the skill to fly it costs more than the damned ship at nearly a half million. Not to mention, I don't think there's any way I'm gonna get the money for both the skill and the ship in time to accept the mission.
So, is this a bug? Seems to me the game shouldn't offer you missions requiring more cargo space than you have available among your assets at the time. Or, is it just required in this game to have indi's all over the place so you can get to one in time in case you are asked to carry some insanely huge cargo by an agent?

Courier missions sometimes require that you carry larger amounts.
Depending on the amount you were asked to carry, a Kestrel may be the answer (can take 300 m3 IIRC).
You could also switch to an agent who gives kill missions rather than courier missions (e.g. one who works for the security division of a corp).

Well you could always make two or three runs. Unless its one very big item of course.
It might mean you miss your bonus deadline, but at least you won't lose standing

Thanks for the replies. I suppose what I should have asked is, do most players have industrial ships in their inventory? I am still a newb, I have been concentrating so far on kill missions and have little to no desire to mine and/or haul stuff often, although I realize it might be necessary on occasion. I had hoped to avoid having to train the industrial ship skill... but is that pretty much a requirement for being in a corp once I get on my feet?
Also, as far as the suggestion to use security-type agents, I thought that as well; however the 2 courier missions (one of which was to move 5 shuttles) were actually given to me by Caldari Navy agents in the Security division, agents who up until that time had only ever given me kill missions.

Get an Indy? It's entirely up to you of course, but I think you will find them a handy thing to have around. Just wait until you decide to relocate to another system and see how much stuff you have accumulated!
As for the agents - yes, agents that normally dish out nothing but kill missions will occasionally give you a courier mission. Equally, an agent that normally gives courier missions will sometimes surprise you with a combat mission. I've been caught out by this - attempting to run a kill mission with a ship setup for speed/light courier work can be time consuming!

I usually refuse the boring missions and only take the kill ones. FInd a place with more than 1 agent of the type you want, so that you can take 2,3,4,5 missions at a time, and if you refuse 1 of them you still get positive faction.
Missions are getting better, but they are still hosed IMHO, because some agents still give you types of missions you dont want, I'd love to see some way of ONLY getting kill missions, and plenty of stuff to kill, not just warp to the bookmark, kill 2 weak things, then have to dock, thats not a fun mission.
And courier missions are just plain retarded. Here, take this bottle of wine to my sick granny in Caldari Prime, if you complete this mission I'll give you 20k for making 15 jumps.
Pfft.

Yeah i had the same, was flying a Moa, and had to do a courier over 28 jumps. Cant do that in a Moa in 1 hour (for the bonus). So you will not get the bonus, not that a big deal :)

I had a probe for those missions. Now I switched to a speed fitted stabber for those couriers of upto 600 m3. 10 mn afterburner, 100 mn afterburner with overdrives, cap recharges, cargo expoanders as needed. Top speed including skills is over 2k m/sec and it can do infinity aproaches to gate with the afterburners on autorepeat. Never ran out of cap and longest trip till now was 70 jumps in an hour.

I use four ships for agent missions; a frigate with microwarp for speed (Vigil) a fast cruiser with microwarp for volumes up to ~500m¦ and for light combat (Stabber) an industrial for big hauling (Hoarder) and a heavy cruiser for killing (Typhoon*)
But I also do mining/hunting/trading type stuff, so I need those ships anyway.
* I know technically the Typhoon is a battleship, but I use it like a really big cruiser.

I dont have an indy near my agent. I usually try and haul this crap in 3/4 runs. Ill miss the bonus but alteast i wont lose standing, or waste money on an indy
Kind of silly that agents give me more then i can haul and i dont even extend the bonus timer... ---------------------------

heh, I've got at least half a dozen indy's lay around in empire space for handy transport when I need it.
The inital skill is expensive, yes - but the benifits are worth alot more.
