I have been playing eve for all off 24hours and I was wondering about joining the Navy! I just have a few questions about it before I do
1. will it open up new quests for me? 2. I hear ppl talking about having military spec ships is it this way I get access to new hardware? 3. Is it worth the risk or is that a ship level I should w8 for before signing my life away?
Thanks in advance to any helpful answers

Sorry, was trying to answer you, but honestly, you are not making much sense.
First of all, there is no Navy you can join in Eve. You can join the militias, but that is something diffrent from the Navies.
Quests is misleading, as there are no quests in Eve only missions.
'Military spec ships' don't make much sense to me either. All ships in Eve can be used in a military operation, in case of freighter mostly on the recieving end though.
As I have no idea what you mean by 'signing my life away' I can't really answer that one either. But if you are talking about the militias? Then sign in them, as soon as you want and can easily replace the ships you fly. Militias are pvp, so you won't fly against stupid NPCs, but against other players who will blow you up repeatedly.

Edited by: Dr Grot on 19/05/2009 11:23:45 I think he means militia, which is part of Faction Warfare, I'll refer to this as FW from now on.
1, FW does have special missions but atm they considered a waste of time by most of us. The risk vs reward is not balanced so it makes more sense to run normal high sec missions to maintain an income.
2, Military ships and mods are attainable by everyone regardless of FW. You can exchange Loyalty Points, Tags and Items with NPC corps to get them. You may see them for sale on the contract list too. They are relatively very expensive and not good value for money when used for PvP imo.
3, You can enter FW at any skill level as long as you meet the faction standing requirements. Skill points are not that important, there is room for t1 tackler in almost every fleet. As for risk vs reward, well FW is an ISK sink, you need to maintain an income to cover ship loses. FW does not compensate you for losing ships nor does it give you a viable means to make any meaningful amounts of ISK. See 1, ------------------------------------------

@ OP - did you mean like Caldari Navy? if so, then no, you can't join them. You could sign up for the militia, as mentioned above.
By "Militray ships", are you referring to ships like the Caldari Navy Raven? If so, yes you can get one, but probably not yet - need to grind lots of missions and get a few bits and pieces as well as a shedload of cash and loyalty points (gained from completing missions).
To be (brutally) honest, whilst it's great that you are intrigued & interested enough to ask questions like these, if I was you, I'd spend my time on learning the mechanics of the game, and start exploring different aspects of it. It's really unlike WoW or anything like that. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's good to have ambition & aspirations, but learn to walk before you run!
Fly safe, and if you're ever in The Forge region, look me up, I'll try to give you some pointers.

IMO there are too many new people that jump into FW (I blame CCP for making it too easy now) that have NO idea what they are doing.
They ask basic questions that should have been answered from the tutorials (in-game, F12...Tutorial tab, and the 3 or so agents, and the online guides you see the link to on the right....right?...), Rookie chat channel, and at least a month or two of experience.
Join a player corp and ask these questions before jumping into the NPC FW corp and expecting those people to explain to you what they mean while you are in a pvp fleet.

To be clear, you should state that you're talking about "Navy Issue" version of ships. Simply speaking I'd consider "military ships" to refer to pew-pew ships (i.e. most ships apart from haulers, mining ships, shuttles etc). Combat ships can be bought freely off the market and most represent excellent value for money.
Something else to mention is that there's no concept of "binding" like their is in WOW, if I understand how that works correctly. In order to use an item (including ships and modules) you just have to train the prerequisite skills (if any); after that, if you own the item you are able to use it. Since there are no restrictions on what skills can be trained for any character, or what items can be owned by any character (you can obtain anything through contracts if you find a willing seller and are able to offer an acceptable trade) - anyone can in theory use any* ship/module with sufficient skill training.
*Yes, for the nitpickers the Jove ships are potential exceptions; not because they explicitly violate what I've said, but because you can't train the skills due to their recursive prerequisites. But then Jove ships don't really exist anyway.

Not correct, I have seen one. Granted, the pilot was named "CCP Greyscale", but yet they exist. :-)

If you sign up with one of these NPC factions, like the Galente Federation "navy" can you opt to leave at any time or is there a certain amount of time you must stay enlisted?

you can leave at anytime you want. if you do it in a middle of a fight though you will be lined up against a wall and shoot though. --------------------------------------------- Playing minmatar is "like going down a flight of stairs in a office chair firing an Uzi". |
