I know CCP usualy telling us there isnt a best ship but a lot of users are telling me that a Cyclone is worse at almost everything because active shield tanking doesnt seem to be that great and there seems to be a lot of ships which are simply better at certain roles or even at everything else vs. a equal ship type. I just would like to know what types i should go for no matter what race the ship is from. I just put down examples im interested into it mainly but there can be a lot more. And if i could know the reason why those ships are "better" at.

Battlecruisers: PVE - Drake (nothing can beat the passive shield tank for missioning, and it does reliable DPS) PVP - Brutix (nice mixture of slots, can do decent dps, not expensive)
Command Ship: PVE - Nighthawk (easily the best PVE CS, can tank like a beast) PVP - Astarte (tanks like a beast, does dps to match) --- Grez: I shot the sheriff Kalazar: But I could not lock the Deputy BECAUSE OF FALCON |

PVP-wise since Command Ships are so insane-o expensive these days, I've mostly been seeing people in the Fleet variety (Vulture, Eos, etc...) to give ass-kicking boosts.

I agree, drones mean you can use all your slots tanking like a b****, leaving highs open for NOS / Energy Neuts. Drones also mean you can choose damage type, massive drone bay mean you can carry 3 sets of heavies. Small / Med / Large drones mean you can take on any size ship.
Only downside are not many med-slots, so no good tackling (your going to want those full of cap rechargers), and drones are fairly low-dps.
It's just a shame it looks like a flying turd.
Megathron in theory should be a better ship, but i can't seem to make it tank as much AND do the same / more damage.

And what is the Cyclone good for? They say its not good at PVP and not any special at PVE too, a Hurricane would beat it everywhere. What about the Sleipnir, which is basically kinda like a upgraded Cyclone?
I got a Cyclone but everyone is telling me, its no good ship.

Right, and how are you gonna kill your oponnents with? Releasing your shuttles, protecting them with drones and wait till your friends has gotten a battleship with? Or how?

Per usual the high 'noise to signal ratio' troll ret@rds are out in force, just disregard them.
The whole active vs passive tanking has to do with the situation you're in and the fact that plates and shield extenders are just too good (and should be toned down tbh). Active tanking still is important in situations where the fight is going to take a while, or when your tanking is SO good it's just better than passive.
If you do the math you'll find that a single shield extender or plate (of the proper size ofcourse) makes up for roughly 45-50 seconds of shieldboosting/repairing and as most fights don't last that long AND the fact you don't have to micromanage your tank and it doesn't take any cap you're just better off with a passive tank. In fleets when you get attacked by several people at the same time active tanking just isn't going to work, all you can do is pile up the HP/resists and hope to survive the onslaught long enough to make a difference.
The issue with the cyclone isn't so much it's active tanking, it's the lack of focus regarding slots and weapontypes. Apart from that it's a tier 1 BC and most tier 1 aren't really that good.
Making a list is difficult because it depends on what you do; the requirements for solo, gang, fleet, 0.0 or low sec are very different.
BC pve: Drake (Myrm is a nice second) pvp: harbinger (gang/fleet), drake performs well as long as the pilot stops thinking he's in PVE mode. solo harbinger/hurricane/myrm and again the drake is quite good if used well
CS: pve: NH pvp: don't, they aren't worth their cost when used in a direct pvp role, the fleet booster versions are very nice though and then it depends on what the fleet needs
BS: pve: raven (or derivatives), dominix. Most others can perform decently apart from minmatar BS, they're not on par with the rest pvp: impossible to say because it very much depends on what you're doing. Fleet clearly favours amarr/caldari, solo favours gallente/minmatar
On the whole you could state the following;
Minmatar ships get worse the bigger they get because the agility/speed/signature radius bonuses they have tend to get lost on bigger ships. They work well in a solo or small gang role but not neccesarily well in fleets (minmatar BS in fleet just aren't as good).
Amarr ships do better the bigger they get and apart from specific shiptypes they perform well in gangs and fleets. Their simple approach of passive tank+ long range damage just works well, they're not versatile and arguably less good at solo stuff (again, apart from a few specific ships).
Caldari has the best cards for PVE but can be VERY good in PVP if people would just stop thinking they have to tank like an idiot. They have a good fleet BS and the Drake is VERY versatile.
Gallente is probably the best mix of pve/pvp solo/fleet, even though people aren't really happy with gallente in short range fleets due to their lack of range this is more an issue with how good amarr is rather than how bad gallente is in this respect. Still, to me they're the best allrounder.

Edited by: King Rothgar on 23/05/2009 09:56:25 I don't think there are any overall bests but some are certainly far more capable in certain roles than other ships. The curse, pilgrim and ishtar come to mind immediately for solo hunting off of gates/stations. These 3 ships can solo about 90% of ships in eve with little or no risk to themselves.
Edit: I agree with above that the harbinger is top dog for pvp BC, BS is harder to judge. The Abaddon is best under sentry fire but without sentry fire I'd say the dominix is the best small gang/solo BS.

Battlecruisers: PVE - Drake
It's a no brainer to fly, it's weapons are efficient and it's tank is silly tough and easily configurable.
PVP - Harbinger
It's a superbly efficient DPS platform throughout most typical small gang engagement ranges.
Command Ship: PVE - Nighthawk
See Drake.
PVP - Absolution
See Harbinger.
Battleship: PVP
No clue.
PVE - Raven / Domi
Configurable tracking independent DPS

Sounds good, however it doesnt work as easy as that. I tried to tank a high powered Brutix using a extremely heavy shield boosted Cyclone. The Cyclone was spiked with mad powered "Domination modules" in every single med slot and including shield rigs. And in long term i would have lost, the Brutix would have gotten me easely. I might still lack skills but i dont think i would be able to survive against, no matter what skill. There are simply "better ships".

Edited by: Cygnus Zhada on 23/05/2009 16:02:25 The trick to not dieing to a brutix is to not let it get close to you, if you keep it at 7+km he's not going to deal any damage worth noting whereas your autocannons still work decently in falloff.
Getting close to a blaster ship is suicide, that's how it should be.

Battlecruisers: PVE Drake hands down - but others can preform well. Not just as safe as the drake. PVP All around? Hurricane. Gangs "Glass cannon"? Harbinger.
Command Ship: PVE Nighthawk or Sleipnir PVP Sleipnir
Battleship: PVP - Megathron PVE - Dominix - Seriously, ravens are for newbies who cant dps. EVE is like the "Fisherman's Friend" of MMOs. If it's too hard, you are too weak. |

Domi fits a cap booster.
And Mega's dps and tank are insane when plated with neutrons.

Edited by: Miss Xoco on 24/05/2009 02:25:04 I was taking a close look toward Astarte and i have to say "what a awesome PVP ship". Its basically a "Super-Brutix". Just to bad its a command ship and they are just way to expensive for such a duty. So, in theory it kills even a heavy interceptor, i believe. However, i wouldnt play around with. Rather on a big fleet with higher security.
