Edited by: Purest Heart on 24/05/2009 10:13:16 Hi all,
I've just come back to EVE after quite a long stint away (9 or 10 months). I've never been very good at making money in this game, always scraping by with just enough isk to buy my next PvP ship and not really paying attention to the 'don't fly what you can't afford to lose' golden rule.
Level 4 missions gave me some income just before I left but on coming back I thought I'd hang up the guns for a while and try my hand at trading. It's always something I've been meaning to give a go but never have.
So my question is this. I'm looking at cross region trading to start me off. I have about 6/700 mill to use after buying a trading ship, and I'm looking at either a gallente blockade runner or gallente transport.
Which would be best? The blockade runner for it's speed and cloak ability or the transport for it's better capacity?
Thank in advance.
[EDIT] I'll be maxing out cargo optimisation rigs too if that makes a difference.

you're talking about hauling, the bastard child of trading. Do the research first and the answer will come. Check the 5 biggest trade hubs for products that maximize some equation only you can decide but which should probably have the variables: margin, turn around, competition with updates, transport hassle.
Obviously if you have a seperate trade char and are a no lifer the competition variable might be less important whereas if you're a single mom with 8 kids it might be very important.
Don't buy a nailgun before you know what you are gonna use it for.

If you don't need the stealth mode on your hauler, I'd go with the deep space transport. You can get some really nice room in it or convert it to a very solid tank depending on your needs.
Since you've been gone a while, I will let you know that they changed the bonuses on the transports (if you hadn't already noticed this) so that the blockade runners can fit the covert ops cloak now.

Interesting. What is trading then?
I have an idea of what to do in my mind, I just wondered whether people valued capacity over speed. The reason I thought a T2 hauler would be a good idea is to make the chance of getting ganked less likely.
I don't have much RL time to put into EVE and thought that this might be a good way to setup buy and sell orders and hopefully make some ISK whilst offline.

Without knowing what the idea is or how much isk/m3 you're talking we're all just guessing what to respond, I don't like this. Granted you said you probably needed Some kind of hauler and you said you didn't have that much game time I'll guess instead.
purest trading plan v 0.3: set buy orders of uncommon meta3-4 mods in a mission hub that don't have alot of competition, haul and sell these in jita where the turn around will be higher.
If you can fit your net worth of these modules in an t2 hauler then that will be quicker and more gank safe. If you would need to make multiple trips consider a t1 hauler with 1xdc2 and rest cargo expanders and a shield buffer tank.

There are many ways to "trade" in Eve PH, including the style you have in mind. Most players on the MD forums class Eve trading to be more akin to the real life financial markets, in other words sitting in station in a busy hub monitoring buy/sell orders and buying low and reselling at a profit - all without leaving their chair. Demand in hub stations is more than sufficient to do this quite effectively if you have patience and don't get bored easily.
However, there is plenty of isk to be made from other types of trading, including buying items where they are available in abundance and delivering those items where there is a shortage and thus a demand, and this type of trading will of course require the movement of the items. A lot of players use public courier contracts for this and I have to say that I have always found them to provide an outstanding service, but only if you pay them well, and quite right too. They are afterall a partner in your business plan.
To answer your question though. In my experience the blockade runner is much more efficient. If fitted correctly (see the ships and modules forum) they are all but unstoppable in most situations and only really struggle when they hit a bubble, and even then they have a good fighting chance. Check out the aforementioned forum for plenty of tips and fittings. I use blockade runners a lot, occasionaly in 0.0 - I have yet to lose one (touches wood).
There are many ways to trade, so don't be put off by some of the blinkered responses you may get. Keep looking until you find a trading playstyle you enjoy. Good luck and have fun.
