Listen to the lot of ya talking about which shaving creams to use and the best blade and how to make the right conditions. We're not women when it comes to the bathroom. Water and a razor, takes all of 2 minutes.
Somebody bought me some gel once for Christmas, that was like 10 years ago.

huh I'm suprised so many guys are having trouble shaving, I used to get a rash on my neck after each shave when I was a teenager but since I started using baby oil its gone. Try shaving in the shower, apply a thin layer of baby oil to your face, then use foam/gel over the top, lather, then shave, you should end up with a close shave with little to no irritation.
I'm gunna sound realy gay now but your skin will be left feeling soft and moisturised throughout the day, baby oil locks x10 times as much moisture when used with water than most leading moisturisers. Mositurised skin is less prome to irritation and the oil will actualy make the beard hairs slightly softer. _______________________________________ [a cool picture here] |

i have only a few years worth of shaving under my belt, but i had a few similar issues when i started shaving.
my first piece of advice is try using an electric shaver, both foil and rotary types.
some peoples faces hate foils, some rotaries, some razor blades, and some more then one.
by the sounds of it, your face and razor blades do not get along. try something else, see how it goes.
my second is to only shave when you need to.
yes, you look a little grotty when you turn up to uni with a bit of stubble (im lucky in that respect, blond beards might look a bit wussy, but its almost impossible to see blond stubble against fair skin, unless its REALLY long), but noone is gonna shun you because of it, and it feels a lot nicer.
i find it interesting that people advocate shaving after a shower or soaking your face.
admittedly i use a rotary shaver, but i find shaving when my face is damp much harder, and also an unpleasant feeling.

for OP
Step 1: Wetshave(take a shower first)
Step 2: Apply shaving cream
Step 3: 4 strokes, one with the grain, one sideways from the left, one from the right right and one against the grain.
Step 4: Wash and apply aftershave.
Or just get a trimmer and stick to a Five o'clock shadow, may look like a neckbeard if you lost the genetic lottery though. EVE is like the "Fisherman's Friend" of MMOs. If it's too hard, you are too weak. |

Originally by: F'nog 4) Do you rinse your blade in cold water? I've found that the best wa to make it less painful (thank you Good Morning Vietnam), along with doing it after a hot shower has loosed up the skin and opened the pores -- there's a reason old barber shop shaving scenes always involved a warm towel around the face.
Having been the recipient of many of them, from a number of different Master Barbers, here's how to get a barbershop-quality shave:
- Start by setting aside some time. Ten minutes is probably good. This isn't necessarily how you'd shave every day, but it's an excellent choice for how to shave on a weekend or before a big date.
- Start by wetting down two clean hand/dish towels. You want them soaking wet. Place them in a large microwave-safe bowl, and nuke them for about a minute or so.
- Remove the top towel, fold it over on itself several times, and press it firmly against your face. It should cover from your eyes to your Adam's apple, so it should hold the appearance of an "L" around your chin. Pull tightly on the two ends so that it's held tightly against your cheeks, as well. Stop, relax, and listen to your house breathing, your own breathing, etc. Remove the towel when it stops feeling warm to your face, which should be in around one and a half to two minutes.
- Apply some (preferably-heated) shaving foam. Be exceedingly generous.
- Now take the second towel, which should still be warm, and hold it against your face for about thirty seconds, allowing it to goop up all the foam you just put on.
- If you don't have a decent veneer of foam on your face, warm back up the towel, apply more foam, and repeat the previous step.
- Everything up to this point has been softening the hairs in preparation for the actual application of a razor. Break out your razor with as fresh a blade as you can get ahold of. Here's the rule of thumb: odd numbers of blades good, even numbers bad. 1, 3, or 5 blades? Great. 2 or 4? Crap.
- Shave with the grain, stopping to apply more warm foam when you get about halfway across. If you don't have warm foam, you might want to skip this second application.
- Now take a towel that's been run through cool-to-lukewarm water, and press it against your face just as you did with the warm ones before. It'll feel blisteringly cold, so use your hands' sense of its temperature to remind your face to take it like a man. Before, we used warm, warm, warm to open up pores and soften hair. Now, we want to close pores.
- After thirty seconds or so, remove the cold towel, using a wiping motion to remove any remaining shave gunk (hair, foam, etc.).
- Now, optionally, using just a little bit of foam, you can shave against the grain. If you do this, rinse the blade constantly under very hot water to lessen the chance of an infection causing those little red bumps. Only shave against the grain over a given spot once.
- Finally, apply some alcohol-based aftershave. They only sting if you have cut yourself, which there's no reason you should have done with this approach, and they will further help to kill any bacteria that's eager to make your face look like a Martian rock.
You can also go out and have this done. Expect to spend anywhere between $10 (at your neighborhood barber shop) and $50 (at a dedicated men's spa), plus tip. Ask your barber how many he does a year; if he doesn't say at least one every other day (i.e., 150), suddenly discover you're short on cash or time, and elect not to have him do a shave. Having a proper "barber's straight-razor shave" (which is what you should ask for, by the way) is probably the single most relaxing, indulgent thing a guy can do without feeling feminine, and for bonus points, it makes the ladies love your face whenever you're brushing against a sensitive area (like their... cheek).
Lastly, a foam warmer is all of $10. Go buy one.

I shave IN the shower using a gillete mach 3, some really viscous shower gel (the thicker the better) and a small hand mirror.
I still try to shave at most every 2 days (more if the accasion demands it).
Believe me, shaving IN the hot shower is loads better than getting out and shaving. It really makes a difference.
I try ot to shave against the grain unless there is a special occasion. Sometimes I shave a bit sideways
I have never really found a decent aftershave. The best one I found was a menthol one by gilette, but I can't find it in Germany. ---------------

My face hasnt seen a decent shave in years. Although when I did shave i used a Gillete shaving foam and a Mach 3. I have a fusion now but i only really use it for touch ups. I never shaved every day when I did shave. And I went against the grain a lot. I never really cut myself either (at least not badly).
Ironically, my grandfather worked for Gillette's headquarters here in Boston for many years. he developed some kind of machine that they still use today to make the razors. Dont remember what exactly it was.

This is exactly how I do it!
When I take the beard completly off I use only water and do it in the shower with the water running down my face. I go with the grain till the hair is very short and if I want a real smooth face I will do a few swipes against the grain. The key is to not use a blade more then 3-5 shaves depending on how long the hair was and if I had to do my head also.

Do all the preparation in water as hot as you can handle, but when it actually comes to putting the razor to your face, use cold water.
Try it, you'll be suprised at the result.

On a positive note, it might works for our legs. (No, I don't)
But seriously, to those who go by the "water and 2 minutes"...do you harbour some sort of insecurity or misconception that a good shave will in some way put a dent in your "manliness"? If that is so, might I suggest you have your birth certificate ready at all times, if ever in doubt?
Or is it that your beard growth would be literally gone with the wind if a hair dryer was to be accidently pointed in your direction? (oh, snap)
Then again, if it works for you good for you. For some it won't. For me, definitely not. People have different skin types, some have a rougher beard than others etc. It's a bit like treating all diseases with the same medicine expecting the same result. But hey, at least *some* will survive using that method.
Put aside your misconceptions of manliness and just get a shave, will you.
A *clean* (and sharp) razor, if that's what your weapon of choice, prevents much of the blemishes and in-grown hairs. Rinse often, during the shave.
I guess one problem with a baby bottom smooth shave is that if you're around the legal age for consuming alcohol where you live, the door man might ask for your ID more often than you might be comfortable with. Don't worry, later on in life you'll take that as a compliment.

What I do is to wash my face first and then rinse it off with cold or just warm water. I first shave with the grain and use a little soap with it, too. Then I shave against the grain but use clear, cold water. The trick really is to get the pores closed and to have a clean skin before I do that.
Do not rub off your face with a towel nor wash it off with hot water before you shave! This only gets a lot of blood into your face and the smallest cut will give the biggest mess.
Then I use a sand blower and to get that big grin into my face. -- If there is anything in your life you fear of losing, then keep your mouth shut once in a while. |

Been shaving for years :O
Above the jawbone, shave down and towards your chin (with the grain).
Below the jawbone and behind it (near ears, under chin/jaw) shave against the grain.
Soak your face and open the pores, or shave right after you shower. Best time to do it is after you wake up. Use a nice foam or a gel and get a good lather all over, then begin shaving.
After you are done shaving, use a skin conditioner or an after-shave. This prevents your skin from razor burn and generally gives you a good tingling sensation to feel clear.
Note also that I experience it is way easier to shave when I have shaved recently, rather than to let it grow. And it only takes 1-2 minutes.

I'm wondering a few things atm as I have always shaved against the grain using a rotary electric shaver. Always end up with spots on my skin (especially on my neck, and in-grown hairs.
1. Can you shave with the grain using a rotary electric shaver? I tried this today and it's not possible. I'm asking because it's a worn-out shaver that's not as sharp as it used to be.
2. Is it myth or fact that using a razor causes your beard to grow thicker than when using an electric shaver? I've been trying a razor for two weeks now and it does seem like my beard is growing thicker than it used to. Could be I'm just imagining it.
3. What's the difference between the oscillating shaver and the rotary? I've got a pretty dark complexion (terrorist) I'm trying to avoid a thicker beard if I can.

I use an oscillating shaver and go with the grain, it leaves nice stubble and I actually got the razor from Rite Aid for $3
The red dots was explained earlier, when you go against the grain you cut the hair down into the follicle and it can grow into your skin from there.
And as for it growing in thicker I'm going to call BS on that

1. No, that is physically impossible as they cut in all directions. Unless it would be a very fancy high-tech shaver designed by NASA and Boeing / McDonnell Douglas.
2. Sounds much like a myth. The only difference is that a razor cuts the hair clean off, whereas electric shavers more or less squeeze it off and thereby causes the ends to split and crack.
3. The rotary shaver cuts with a constant speed of the blades and will likely cut the hair cleaner than the oscillating shaver does, which swings like a pendulum.
The two problems I always have with electric shavers is a) the dirt they produce and leave on my skin, and b) the heat they put to my skin, causing me itches. I then often find myself washing off my face, at which point I could have used a razor. They really only help with saving time. The razor is better at everything else.
I have yet to use one of those electric wet shavers and a vibrating razor. The later sounds pretty evil to me. -- If there is anything in your life you fear of losing, then keep your mouth shut once in a while. |
