First of all let me salute all the miners out there.
Having tried my hand at mining for the past 2 days, I honestly feel this is the most mind-numbingly depressing activity I have ever done in a video game, and I have NO idea how you can stand to do this on a daily basis.
You know, the whole game revolves around mining, ore and manufacturing. Without a big chunk of the population doing these things, the rest of us wouldn't have a ship to fly.
Yeah, I've heard how rich some miners are, I've heard about the 40 million isk cans of Ark in 0.0, but isn't half of that money getting kicked back in "protection" or "mining passes?"
I mean if you look at some of the biggest and baddest corps out there, you KNOW none of them would condescend to mine, look at how they mocked Rona-Kia just for having a mining op.
How do you think those big and bad corps finance their fun? Through piracy and extortion.
Its like %75 of the game population works doing a boring-a$$ job to provide the other %25 with ships to go have fun, the big manufacturing houses have a HUGE influence on the game, yet even they are dependent on various "protection" rackets just to be able to operate.
I dunno, I guess after spending 2 days doing mining, I just think it's a disgusting job, and the people who do it prolly receive more grief from the game mechanics than they should.

yes. and no.
a lot of people *want* to mine. Just because you don't, doesn't mean that they don't.
Personally, I find it dull as hell. But luckily for me, some don't. And more power to them.
And a lot of them do make a lot of money. more than me, at any rate.
Depends what makes you happy, I guess. .

Mining isnt for me either but I know a bunch of really sound guys from Quantanamo corp who love to mine all day and make stuff. They probably make a ton of isk doing it too.
As for pirating... I've been skint for the last 6 months with hardly enough isk to buy ammo to shoot. Still I have a blast... what point was I trying to make again.....?

Yeah I agree.
Mining gets you working together as a team, allows all levels of player to partake and because its so mundane gets you talking.
Dont mine anymore myself but the months I did it for got me into a battleship and build plenty of relationships.

As a full time miner and a miner in empire i can tell you that mining is boring... However using my battleship, i will soon have completed mining for a 3rd tempest. I could sell the ships and have 300m.
When i mine i spend most the time chatting to the rest of the corp. Its also nice to have loads of mates to chat 2 and relax rather than the stress of hunting or huge battles (i have enough stress at work in real life!)
Thats my miners view any way! |

Have you ever seen the film 'Matter of Life and Death'? There's a scene in that film where there's a group of pilots entering heaven and they look down and see a hall full of people doing paperwork. One of them looks aghast but then they hear one of the other pilots going 'it's wonderful'. You see to some people doing menial, repetitive, tedious work is like being in heaven. I always think of miners being like that.

Personally, I mined the first 3 months of my time in the game. It was boring and I didn't make many friends in the game, but it provided the base I needed to do what I do now. The only time I mine now is when I spend too much in Yulai or I get too many ships blown up in quick succession. Mining allows me to quickly replenish my isk, allowing me to battle the evil Minmatar terrorist factions!
Mining is fairly boring, but now that I have friends to chat and mine with, it's not bad at all. Plus, there is a bit of challenge (and reward) in creating a successful, efficient mining operation.

go mine in an 0.0 warzone. Its not the same as sucking up Veld in Yulai.
Although mining gets maligned as a dull occupation so would PvE be if all you did was kill 2k rats in a BS.
That would only leave PvP and a lot of the player base is not really ready for that (and given the lag, thank god that is the case).
So challenge yourself, dont just say its dull till you tried the extremes of the occupation.

The key to avoiding being bored is to do something else, either in-game or out of it. This is something that I really like about EVE: I can use time that I'd spend on doing other things to play EVE at the same time.
Since I have a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and a bigscreen TV within sight of the PC, that's one source of entertainment. I also have a music collection, DVD collection, and I play EVE in windowed mode, so I can webbrowse, shop, or do anything else.
In terms of ingame activities, I usually chat with contacts and buddies about things, or just randomly chat with people in local.

Mining solo can be pretty boring and repetative. I did it for my first 2-3months but pretty much gave up after I made enough ISK from it to get my first BS.
On the other hand, a well organised mining operation is a beautiful sight to behold. It's the co-operation involved that appeals.

hehe We only mined that day because we are to lazy to move 10k missles/torps ammo etc but we had to resupply due to the fact we were moving theater of war, then some evol idiot decides to say we are doing it because it is our only source of income

Edited by: Elucidate on 09/09/2004 16:34:58 I find mining fun, cos I sit around in .5/.6 belts mining kernite and unleashing the fury of my drones upon NPC rats for a little extra income. I can get 4-5 npc spawns per can which nets me a 'free' extra 100k-150k ISK, at the cost of maybe 1-2 drones (I use HammerHeads, they're maybe 20k each).
Each can run nets me 2.2 Million ISK.
Best part is the fact that I can sit there and tank them while I mine (I shield tank, but may switch to armor tanking instead). ------------ Elucidate - Extraordinarily Lazy Miner |
