Hi everyone, this question may have been asked before, but:
My corp is thinking about putting up a POS with a moon harvester at a moon that provides hydrocarbons and silicates. I'm new to the whole moon mining thing - are hydrocarbons and silicates worth mining? What can they be used for? (Someone told me that they can be converted to carbon polymers... what are carbon polymers worth and what are they used for?) If we only have one moon harvester, will it be able to pay for fueling a small POS?

No. Those materials are not worth mining. They will not pay for your small pos. Countless pos in 0.0 mine them to offset a small fraction of the fuel costs, seriously reducing their value.

What type of moon should a beginning corp mine? We are planning on setting up our first POS...

The minerals to mine are either almost worthless or they are worth enough to shoot down your tower. Choose your poison

I agree with the last poster for the most part. You should probably fund your pos with research/manufacturing fees or reaction(s). You could probably supplement the other income with the mining of a r8 without opening yourself up to attack.

Is there any point for a medium sized corp to build a POS then? If it isn't profitable then should we not bother putting up a POS?

There is profit to be made by a medium/small corp putting up a pos. It just isn't made by moon mining.

How can a POS generate revenue other than through a moon harvester? Sorry about my noobness - totally new to this POS thing.

try to scan out a cadmium/chromium/mercury/ect moon
r4s and r8s are worthless and are only mined for a reaction or to partially cover costs
