I've been playing EVE on and off for years now, and this time around, I'm at the stage where I'm finally ready to achieve my original goal in game of flying a Recon ship. Nevermind that I'm already into Marauders otherwise, a Recon ship has always taken my fancy. I'm only Sig Analysis V away from it now, and before I get into it, I'd like some advice.
I've read a lot of the sites and I've tried to find guides, but I want the opinion of pilots already out there using them.
So, my questions are:
- What are the differences between Combat Recon and Force Recon. Where is each type used and why. - Are they any good for solo PVP? - Can they also be used effectively in PVE?
Assuming I'll be flying either the Curse or the Pilgrim, what fittings would you suggest? I dont need specific loadouts, just a general indication of the sort of things I should be expecting to fit.
One final thing, if anyone out there is willing to give me some training in how to use these things, that would be awesome and I'd be very appreciative, although it's likely to be a few weeks away yet given the whole Sig An V training. |

One can use cov ops cloak the other cant.

Depends on what you consider good, but yes you can solo pvp very nicely in many of them. Proper target selection is really the key to solo pvp. The curse is a monster in solo pvp, the problem is that people will be warping off if they see you coming in one.

Not really.

I agree with everything except this part. I am able to take on 0.0 rats and small Sleeper groups quite well in a Pilgrim. ~ Santiago Fahahrri Galactic Geographic |

Managing to do something, and doing it effectively is two different things.

How? Not disagreeing at all, but totally intrigued. Up til now I used a HAC or BS. I assume you use some sort of EW for the rats? If so, what?
I'd rather use the Pilgrim overall because I'm a Carthum fan, and I also have low missile skills. That really bugs me about most of the Amarr T2 combat ships actually, in that the really good solo PVP ships are all Khanid missile boats. I.e. Curse, Sacrilege, Vengeance. Wish they'd have some viable laser boats in there too. As it is, the T2 Carthum ones all seem to be geared towards dps setups for fleet support. Anyway, I digress.
My question was; how? :) |

Well, the pigrim is able to be set up as a pretty strong tank (and not that slow). I can tank 0.0 rats all day, all the way up to the tripple battleship spawns.
The drones handle the killing.
It's a very profitable ship for me because there's no costs.. no ammo.
It's also one of the few ships that can rat effectively in a PVP setup. ~ Santiago Fahahrri Galactic Geographic |

and curse is awesome
I do everything in one ship. I operate in deep 0.0 without being affiliated with any alliances. Most of the alliances take exception to that kind of thing. A recon allows me to deal with hostiles, evade blobs, and still get in some ratting for isk. ~ Santiago Fahahrri Galactic Geographic |

Force recon is sneaky but more fragile. It can use a covert ops cloak (warp cloaked). The combat recon is much tougher but cannot warp cloaked. Use the force recon for solo work in 0.0. Take the combat recon in small gangs and in close support in fleet engagements. Originally by: Senghir Are they any good for solo PVP?
Yes. Because force recons warp cloaked, they have the ability to pick their targets. Target selection is the key to victory. Combat recons are just tough. They should be able to handle themselves versus most cruisers Originally by: Senghir Can they also be used effectively in PVE?
I wouldn't use them that way. I got my Rapier blown up twice. Once in an L3 and once 0.0 ratting. Just not the right use for the ship.
Curse has a nasty reputation and is one of those ships people tend to avoid when they encounter it in 0.0.
Good luck.

i love curses , everyone is so weary around them, they have a nasty bite and i know many tacklers that are scared to tackle them because they know it means there death because they have no cap to run MWD.
not many ships am i wear of and the curse is up there
if your quick you can get away in most engagments because all tackling equipment requires cap.
every recon has it place cap is depentent on most modules in which you can effectivly take it away rendering them more useless than being webbed of pointed at 60km.
jamming is good but most ships carry drones in which you will die because will uto agress you and the cycle fails sometimes.
can you tell i love the curse :) OFFLINE[ONLINE]

Overt-v-Covert
- Are they any good for solo PVP?
If you are talking Curse/Pilgrim.....a resounding yes. Target selection important for Pilgrim...less so for Curse (although most tend to run/dock when they see you on scan). Pilgrim requires a lot of patience.
- Can they also be used effectively in PVE?
Errrrr...I hate to admit it but I have ratted in a Curse (full combat fit...just killing time between ops in 0.0) and you can handle losec exploration sites if you don't mind dorking your Pilgrim combat fit a little bit. Don't get popped doing this or folks will laugh at your killmail .
Assuming I'll be flying either the Curse or the Pilgrim, what fittings would you suggest? I dont need specific loadouts, just a general indication of the sort of things I should be expecting to fit.
See Scrapheap Challenge for a general overview of what works and what does not.
One final thing, if anyone out there is willing to give me some training in how to use these things, that would be awesome and I'd be very appreciative, although it's likely to be a few weeks away yet given the whole Sig An V training.
Recon V/drones skills/ENG skills pertaining to fitting..especially neuts/EWAR skills specialized...Turret Destab?
As far as training goes...I couldn't tell you. You wouldn't want me doing it
Hope that helps a bit.

Wut. Vengeance is very meh since they broke rockets and curse is a drone boat. You kill rats by tanking them while your drones eat them. It works because practically anything can kill a rat and nobody screws with a curse.
