I'm just curious, I really like EvE and the only thing that really drives me crazy is the lackluster interface. It's cumbersome and unintuitive for a new player and I can imagine still has it's failings even when using it for years. I mean I was watching the ambulation video with the guy showing off the new character clothes and trying to change location in the station. He looked lost at best navigating through the many lists with the current interface and he stated that he was familiar with the new ambulation content.
I think a better UI would really help the new users ease into the game and help them stay.

This has been debated endlessly over the years. I even petitioned it because the tiny horrible font requires me to wear glasses to play the game We will see ambulation happening before we see an UI revamp. But I know they'd like to, but it's integrated in so much of the code it's rather hard to do, or so I've been told. Same thing for 'unrealistic' physics in space. --- Sol: A microwarp drive? Seconded.
All info boxes can be moved and relocated, even the Selected target. The hit points overiew can be moved fomr top to bottom, so I dont see a problem with it.
I did play a game called Vendetta Online where the same details can be modified by using a template. Maybe CCP could look into that so they wouldnt have to modify it.
Then the users could generate templates to use (Goon overview template? ) and they would be off the hook with "change the UI".
of course any issues with screen details would requrie you to reapply /redownload the original client template but thats a given....

What you're refering to is more like a skinable interface. This is not what the OP meant. EVE Online does need a UI overhaul. There are just too many windows now (fleet, broadcast, drones, chats, cargo, overview, scanner, etc...) that you constantly have to reposition them, unless you don't mind having a tiny viewport in the middle...
I run EVE at max res on a 22" monitor (widescreen too) and I wish I had more space sometimes...

The UI is complicated because the game is pretty complicated. I just hope CCP never dumbs down the game in order to create a simpler UI. Just an opinion :-)

Yes, a UI revamp has been considered. Indeed we have a team dedicated to improving it. This will not happen overnight and will not be swapping one UI for another but rather a steady stream of changes.

Any chance you could persuade them to write a dev blog about their vision for the UI, with examples on what they're thinking of improving? It would be greatly appreciated.

That was a tech demo. Developers like cubersome and confusing interfaces for a reason. If it was hard to code it should be hard to use.
The in station stuff was a demo of the graphics etc, the interface guys hadn't touched it yet most likely. The developers want freedom to add stuff where ever so they can test and worry about driving it later.
The interface isn't *that* bad. Would be nice to have some more options to customize. The issue is that if you have a complicated system, you gotta fit the options somewhere. The interface has certain changed over the years (/misses the old fitting screen).

Steady stream of changes? Last time I played this game in 2004 the UI was exactly the same, with the exception of the new fitting screen which is basically just the old one wrapped around the preview ship window from the market. And you replaced escrow with contracts, which looks to me like the same thing with a different name and worse filters for searching.
Let's face it, nothing exactly new in the UI for years now. What exactly is the team improving in it? Are they gonna make that small almost invisible crosshair that moves the current target list smaller? Or make it disappear completely?
Edit: Or maybe they focus on removing things from the UI without considering the implications :Read the OP here? Top notch work on that "improvement", pat your UI team on the back for me.

This.
On a 24" monitor, in widescreen, the game looks stunning. Unfortunately, one cannot actually read any of text when it is locked to 12-point max for some menus without straining ones eyes.
C'mon CCP, I'm getting on a bit and my eyes are having trouble here!

Actually to be fair, they have made some useful changes.
I'll be the first to criticize the overall state of the UI but they have made changes I use and appreciate, like the tabbed overview, the control thing, some of the fixes to the map, weapon grouping, the ability to stack my targets v e r t i c a l l y
and move the speedo thing.
There's still a bunch more they need to do (overheat? font size? visual display of scan cone onscreen? visual indicator of object movement? non-double click manual piloting?) but since they started with no UI team it's not like they have a running start.

I love the UI. My only complaint would be the aforementioned font issue. If they simply made it scalable (including font) it'd be perfect, or close to it.

I would love to see read an updated dev blog about upcoming changes for the UI and what's in progress. *hint hint*

unless i'm clueless about it, my biggest issue isn't the UI, but the lack of keyboard shortcuts.
there isn't any reason why M shouldn't open / close the map screen or C for your cargo hold, or O for opening your target
if that does already exist, where can i find a list ?

Why don't you guys just halt all major work on the current game and commit to a brand new engine..etc? Seems the current game is gone as far as it should go yeah?

Its not just the UI its the whole way information is presented. A text log file for a combat log, no DPS meters, tiny x to close a window, having to alt or ctrl to use the keyboard, you can't stack the weapons the way you want them or reskin/style the HUD..a million things really. I'm used to using both hands to play a game, one finger gets worn out fast. I'm used to being able to put any information where I want, in the size and style I want. The only way round is to allow player mods which will reduce the need for CCP to do it as well.
Everyone has their own requirements in this game according to what they are doing and personal preference, the current system tries to have one size fits all and these days its a bit archaic to have it that way.

Yes, we can move the windows all over the place, but no matter where we put the windows, the text is still too fisking small. I went out and paid $500 for a pair of glasses...to play Eve.
There really needs to be a way to change text size for the interface, not just the chat windows. Leaning forward and squinting isn't my favorite way to play. A good UI should scale well with changes in resolution, not just be fine one one guy's monitor, but not on another's. --
Nobody expects the Amarr Inquisition!
