If I were to build up the EM, kinetic, thermic, and explosive shield compensation skills. would these affect the usefulness of invulnerability fields?

only when they are turned off (i.e. the base 1% resist you get for just fitting the module)
Compensation skills are all but worthless for active (capacitor using) modules.

Yes. When turned off at level 4 comp skill it will still give a 12% boost to all resists going up to 15% at level 5. This gives passive shield tanked ships some measure of cap warfare protection.

They only work if your invuln is turned off. If your invuln is turned off you're either an idiot or your getting neuted to death. They aren't worth it for invulns.

I will actually answer your question. Yes it affects them but only if they are turned off. Now At times you can throw one on a PVP ship since even if its not on it will reduce overall damage. Resists are great for reducing overall damage, that 12%(level4) reduction or 12% on top of 30% reduces a lot of damage. Or in case of an mess up where you lose your cap, you don't lose all your resists. Its a worthwhile set of skills to have at at least level 3 and it wouldn't take that long to get them to that level.
But the skills are really good on passive resist Mods since they get a 5% bonus per level. At level 5 they are now giving you the same resits more or less the active hardeners. So no cap drain when you fit passive resits.
