I'm a new guy, currently just running missions and training up to grab a cruiser or 3.
So, someone pipes up in the rookie chat, saying he is bored and leaving - and if you want ISK, to ask him. I figure, what's the harm in asking? I have heard about scams that promise to double your money etc - so I would not be giving anything to this guy at all. After a short conversation about why he was leaving - I got 100 million dumped into my wallet - more than enough to buy several cruisers, insure them and kit them out nicely.
Turns out that not everything is a scam - sometimes you can hit it lucky! Sucks that my first use of this money was bailing out a friend of mine who ignored the "don't fly what you can't replace" rule, and did not insure his ride.
Unless of course, I have been victim to a larger scam that I am not yet aware of
Has anyone else experienced random acts of kindness like this in their noob days? I figured good things like this wouldn't happen in EVE of all places.

Edited by: Opera Noir on 03/06/2009 01:03:31 Of course it happens every now and again. When I was in noob corp there was a guy who was either leaving (or had just robbed a corperation) and he was having a contest of who could catch the contract. So what he did was throw a few really nice goodies into a contract for 1 isk (or some other low number) and post it in chat. Needless to say you had to be fast to catch them.
Anyways, I was able to get one and it included 2 abbaddons, 3 capacitor control circuts, and 3 trimek armour pumps. It was awesome and really helped boost me out.
Another guy in the channel was very quick and he got a few of the contracts with some very nice things (easily approaching 1 bil in worth total).

I guess it is testament to how new I am :)
Before I got the money, I was pushing 13 million, saving up to be able to comfortably move into cruisers - while being able to take losses.
100 million is still a lot to me - so, I was well chuffed :)

Just be aware about random ISK from seemingly random (or new) characters in excess of around that amount. ISK buyers try to hide their tracks by giving it to random people on occasion, so if you see 1bil in your wallet one day at random, petition it before you spend it as it could be dirty money.
Nice of that guy though. I remember getting around 10mil from someone at random before juat by talking in the rookie chat...of course, they're just funding the newbies who become cannon fodder to pirates.

I miss the days where I only spent 150 million on skills.
My first week (in 2003, mind you) someone generously gave me 100,000 isk to get out of my Velator and into an Imicus. Was very nice. --- All 390 skills trained. Tripoli on EVE-Sheet.com |

When I was a noob I was ratting in a low sec system in a Thorax. Looked away for five seconds and suddenly was being pounded on by some random guy in a Megathron. Thought I was dead but at the last second he stopped. Then he convoed me and apologized, said my avatar looked like a pirate he was after, then sent me a few million isk for my trouble, even though he hadn't destroyed my ship. It was only a few million, but at the time it was significant for me. Found it a very bizarre experience.
It is funny how what an experienced player sees as a relatively small amount of isk is a huge amount for newer players. I have sometimes thought about giving out random chunks to new players for fun. ----------------------------------------------------

When I was a nubbin, there was someone in the Rookie Channel who ran a quiz show of sorts.
Category changed to "Star Trek Trivia" - I don't recall his name, or the question - but I won a million ISK for beating the rest of the nubbins in channel to the answer.
I bought my very first Rifter with the winnings.
I've no idea how many hundreds of millions of ISK he gave away, while he ran the quizes daily for weeks on end. To be honest, it kinda blew my mind - I thought it was a big deal to turn my initial 5000 ISK into a few hundred-thousand.
Never had 100 mill dropped into my lap, though, from relative strangers.

Well, I would rather be safe than sorry - so I just put in a petition about it. Hopefully they will be able to track it down and let me know if it was dirty money.
I guess I now play the waiting game and avoid spending any more

I was engaging in less than savory activities in lowsec once which ended up in me sitting at a safespot in system waiting out my criminal countdown. Another character starts chatting in local and having nothing better to do I pick up the chat. After some time he tells me that he is leaving the game and giving his stuff out, and as conversation carries on I am constantly hitting the scanner button thinking that he is chatting me up to give him time to probe my ship out or get his anti-pirate friends assembled on the exit gate to this dead-end system. To my greatest surprise now only did I get out of the system unharmed but also a few billion ISK richer

Make trial account, make character, login and follow rookie chat. Find a non-idiot with genuine questions, open convo, answer his questions. If he proves not to be an idiot help him some more, later send him a few mil through an unknown/disposable alt on active account.
I never do this, honest.

Boredom and being rich can be a bad thing. While I don't consider myself to be rich, it is nice to not have to worry about how much you spend on fitting a ship. Giving a wad of 50 mil isk to an obvious newb that is nice is well worth the reaction. I'd rather do that then spend the money on some outrageously overpriced faction mod that's bound to get burned.
Even though I consider myself a 'pirate' and will more than gladly pop someone in an Ibis and their pod, if the guy is less than a few weeks old, well, I'll send some iskies his way to make up for it and hope he learns a lesson about auto-pilot or low sec.

I dunno. I keep hoping I'll get a reason to buy some EVE player a beer iRL.
..oh, you were talking ingame money! *plays silly* - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |
