I was browsing through the different ship layout available to each race and if I am not mistaken there are certain specializations for each race (armor/laser, missles, drones etc). Now the skill investments are quiet time intensive and I am worried that my race choice atm (amarr) could be unfavorable in PvP and/or PVE combat (compared to other races and their ships)
So simple question, how do the different races fare in PvP and PvE? is PvP balanced in eve (which would be quiet an achievement )?

Perception is the attribute that determines how fast you learn pvp and pve gunnery and missile skills.
But remember, intelligence and memory is also important, because to fit those nifty guns and launchers you will need electronics, engineering skills, and if you want to move around good, you will need navigation skills.
Amarr characters get a willpower bonus.
This isn't that great right now, but Amarrian ships get to use pulse lasers, which at this time is the best weapon.
Reasons: Quick changing crystals No ammo Good tracking Good damage
Have a nice day. --------------------------------------------------

As races go, there isn't any real difference. But for ships and weapons go then there is differences, each ship has its strenghths and weakness, hence a lot of people tend to train up in different ship types for different situation. PvP boils down to having a good set up and good skills, the same can be said about PvE but on a lesser scale.
"scotty, i need more power to warp out."
"i canna give yer any more captain, the dilithium crystal was nerfed this morning.. yer just gonna have ta face it, we've been ganked." |

Thanks for the clarification. I managed to search some older posts on this subject. I was under the impression you could not pilot ships of another race, i.e. ammaris could not pilot caldari ships and so on. Well, looks like I had it wrong all this time (yay what a surprise!).

do note however that some ships do have a race bonus, ie if you are of the race that that ship belongs, you get a bonus.
I believe that this is limited to eliete ships, but i could be wrong.

AFAIK, this is if you have trained the race frigate skill to level 5 so instead of showing a +5% (or whatever) per level it says 25% race bonus (or something like that) so, i dont think it has anything to do with what race you are.

The only thing you should be worried about is the pve/pvp abilities of frigs and cruisers atm.
The balance in the battleship area will have changed again by the time you fly them.
as far as frigs go, all races have their good ones. In cruisers, amarr have a top cruiser in the Maller. Both for pve as pvp.
So dont worry, specialise in amarr ships and related skills fro now and you can go diversify later. Specialisation will get you on level most quickly. _______________________________________________

You are indeed correct. This is a common misconception that has been explained by devs and is clear to most older players. "Race bonus" is a bad name - devs, sort it out and end this! The bonus applies to anyone flying that ship, even if its a Minmatar flying a Caldari ship.
Be happy!
