Yesterday I knocked up a quick alt and flew his reaper out in to 0.0 space, just because I was curious. I mainly wanted to see if there were profitable ores and also wanted to see what kind of rats hung out there.
I fully expected to get nailed at the first 0.4 gate I went through, but there was nothing. I eventually found a large camp but the weren't pirates, and in the following system I even came a cross a station warning away pirates. This was near to Minmatar space, although I can't remember what it was called exactly. Also, whilst the rats were scary, there ore seemed only to consist of enormous lumps of veldspar; so nothing special there.
So... 1. Are there existing patches of 0.0 space that are 'protected' from player pirates? 2. How far do you have to go to find rare ores? 3. If safe havens exist, how welcoming are they to players, seeing as there is no garuntee that you won't get melted?
Thanks to the ratting Prophecy pilot who offered up his unwanted loot, nice guy.

sounds like you just went for a little look through lowsec not nullsec. lots of nice people in lowsec - some pirates but a lot of anti-pirates also.
try providence region for a similar 0.0 experience. but most other 0.0 regions held by alliances will kill you if they can if you're not allied with them.
edit: by allied with them, I mean in a coalition with them - "coalessed"?

1) In 0.0 the term pirate has no meaning.
2) The shortest trip I can think of is about 30 jumps. That's ofc without jump bridges.
3) I don't understand that question.

I think he means "is there anywhere in 0.0 space where I can be pretty sure of not getting shot everytime I jump into a system"
the answer is obviously providence region (CVA and -7- space) where they only shoot pirates or those that break amarrian law.
certainly doesn't guarantee your safety and I'm not sure they let neutrals (those who don't have good/high standings with them) to rat or mine.
your best bet is to join an alliance. if you're reluctant, there are lots of benefits usually - ranging from cost-price ships from the manufacturers, ship replacement programs if you go pvping with them and free access to all the mining and ratting you could want so long as you help keep the system clear of enemies (which may or may not be common).

It was definitely 0.0; I assumed low sec covered anything higher up to 0.4.
I appreciate that targeting an hour old Reaper is probably below most pirates, but I viewed a few players who made up the camp and they all had positive security standings. Guess they must have been waiting for rivals or some such business, as they were out in force with bubbles etc. A wary ''gentlemen'' in local didn't arouse anything as I drifted through.
Providence sounds interesting; I read that it is mainly run by Amarrian RP's who are best to be respected. Little else you can do in a reaper, granted.
Thanks for the replies.

0.0 is mostly done by standings. If you have blue standings and are in a friendly alliance then large parts of 0.0 can be safe. If you use scouts and are aware of your surroundings than 0.0 can be *much* safer than empire.
Safety is about providing intel of incoming hostiles and a system for something to happen if a blue shoots you. You're still responsible to watch your own backside.

If you do get into a 0.0 alliance you can probably make more isk picking up their junk then running level 1 & 2 missions. Many ratters only take the valuable stuff. They'll leave lots of isk behind because it isn't worth the time to haul back to station for every spawn.

In low sec they might not shoot assuming you're an annoying scout and wish to retain positive security standings.
In 0.0 they'll shoot you regardless (if nbsi) of security standings. You might be shocked what the occasional reaper/shuttle drops.

Most of 0.0 is empty. Of course, empty systems with excellent truesec are not as common outside of regions with pirate npc sovereignty. Some regions are sparsely settled, and some are more crowded. Some crowded during Euro timezone are empty during US timezone.
If you're not a member of a player corp/alliance, you can still travel to 0.0 and earn isk, but mining is almost certainly not an option, since you need a place to refine the ore. There might be some npc 0.0 regions (Gemanite, Syndicate, etc) with accessible refinery stations, but this will be the exception rather than the rule.
You can rat/mission in 0.0, and this can be very profitable in the pirate regions of Curse, Delve, Fountain, Stain, and Venal, since the entire regions have -1.0 truesec when it comes to rats. Still, your big payday is going to come by bagging an Officer spawn and that amounts to luck. I've lived in 0.0 for 3 years and gotten 1 Officer (payed pretty well, on the order of 700-800M isk, but I know people who've made a couple billion off one).

Which is why you should focus on isk/hour than some measly 1bil every 3 years.
Officer spawns should be like finding a winning lottery ticket on the ground. That doesn't mean you should be playing that game weekly.

To add, missioning is 0.0 is limited to areas with NPC sov. There is little reason to mission for NPC corps that aren't pirates, now. However, you do get a boost to isk rewards (and I think LP - not sure about that) from 0.0 missions.
The best pirate faction to mission for is Sansha, by far. Sanshas offer the lucrative Slave implants in their LP store. Before the speed nerf, missioning for Serpentis was more profitable, but Snake implants have since dropped in value significantly. |

Same goes for -7- space, so feel free to set course for KBP7-G. We have a nice big gate from hisec to 0.0, so it's hard to get ganked there :P
Also I have flown a rifter right around the edge of new eden... it can get pretty empty uot there :)

If you were in a Reaper, with a brand new alt, they've probably assumed you're a scan alt. i.e. you were flying through to report back what you found. Often gate camps won't bother shooting a scan alt, they're waiting for whatever you were scouting for, so they can pop something worthwhile. You may well have been passively (or even actively) cargo scanned to see what you're carrying and if it's nothing worthwhile then you'd be allowed to pass in many cases. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? might want to investigate picking up a jump clone while you're down there also if you're not planning on joining any corp/alliance in the near future - think they charge 12 mil if I remember correctly. it's what I did when I was a newbie. (I think I still have a shuttle or two in Iron Pig station).
if you are planning on joining a 0.0 alliance don't bother though because you can get all the free clones you want at the alliance's outposts. |

I would HIGHLY recommend that anyone thinking of travelling to Providence reads the FAQ section on the website linked by my colleague above before travelling to Providence. It generally goes a lot better if people check if they are red before getting blown up and accusing us or our allies of piracy! ----- Alliance Creation/Corp Expansion Services

I second this motion! I'll never forget the RED trader who came down the pipe and was trying to sell off a trimark rigged Geddon for like 50% market value at the station in system...
I spent half an hour wondering if he was trying to scam or if he really just had no clue he was marked hostile.
Almost private convo'd him to warn him that it would be in his best interests to leave but he left before I had decided that he actually was offering a stellar deal (60mil for a trimark Geddon, ).
There is also the possibility that he was a former neutral resident who suddenly found himself marked RED and with rigged ships stuck in low security and was too afraid to attempt getting them out, ...
{...and they will respect a line drawn in the sand more than forgiveness} |
