I have been back to Eve for around 5 months, after a 7 month respite. Now in that time I had given my account to someone looking for another, and returned to start anew...sort of...
To start at the beggining lets go back to pre-castor days(w00t), when your only goal was a battleship. Well needless to say, I got my first one, had it for a month drove into m0o territory and watched it blow up. Fun, good, great, all part of the fantastic game. So of course, I had to work for another, and it was about at this time that I asked myself that key question...What next? What do you do when you buy the biggest baddest ship in the game, in a game where your ship is you? Hell I don't know, thats why I'm here. So of course I flew it around and blew stuff up, then I realized that I wasn't putting any money towards anything. This then raised the question of why I was doing anything at all. Then castor came, uber spawns, bugs, the works, it was a dead end for me, and I cancelled my subscription. Great, dandy, hearfilled emotional story, what the hell are you doing here posting? Well, I'm back, and I've done it again, except a couple months ahead of schedule. I hit that barrier, I got my battleship...What now? Unlike those level treadmills you see in other games, which do provide a sense of orientation.."Oh I leveled, SWEET, now next level here I come" and off you go. Not at all the same here, it's a waiting game, you wait for a skill. Nice, lovely, great idea, what to do in the mean time? Make money knucklehead! Ok so I have money, and everything that I want to use, but WTF do I use it for? What do I do while I wait to use it? To play another game seems a waste of good time that could be spent here, not to mention it feels like I'm missing out on what the other Eve-maniacs so clearly see in this game. I got back together with my old homies, and they are all just as intrigued in this game as they were before. Now I can't see what goals have motivated them to play since release. So here I am asking you forum dwellers to reply, What in god's name drives you to play Eve? What makes it fun for you? What do you do when you hit the top? It feels like 10 months ago, all over again, except I know I'm missing something about the game, and I'm not ready to resign...again, when it's possible to be saved.

Well, I know I am still new to the game (still flying around in the first Rifter that I ever got; couple of close calls to losing it, but so far have scratched out the big "W" when it counted). Right now, what drives me is being able to set up my rifter in a nice fashion. In fact, in about 12 hours I will finally be able to mount two 280mm's on my rifter, along with the two standard missile launchers I have (I had to train engie up to 4 in order to squeeze enough MW out of the powergrid to do it). Once I finally get the rifter setup I want, I am going to train my skills to make it even better (have about 10 gunnery skills that I want to train up, and that is just the begining). All this done, even before I own my first cruisier.
Yet I know that the drive to improve myself will end one day, after I have attained all that I want and some that I don't. So what next?
Well, in my ingame bio, I describe myself as one that lost his father due to pirate raids on a mining operation. I wish to stop that from happening ever again, when I can. So I hunt rats a lot, and I network with as many people as I can to offer my services as a proctector in space (I can protect in .6 space with ease, haven't tried doing it in anything lower, probably wait until I get a cruisier). So this is what drives me, minimal roleplay and helping out those that wish to mine and build. Yeah, I know a lot of people that can go out there and both mine and run defense. But imagine how much more they could mine if they didn't have to worry about incoming rats all the time.
just my .02isk - Bunny is not currently here. He is on a SpecOps mission to kill the leader of a small third world country, the first step on the road to world domination. |

My imagination. I try not to get fixated on possessions, implants, ships etc as they can cause you to become very cautious in your gamestyle and therefore rather bored.
I have 3 wars going at the moment, I'm stalking the corporations involved and I've managed to acquire 2 corpses without loss so far in the last 3 days.
In my relaxation time I steal ore from people in a mammoth.
I sometimes go pirate miners in 0.4 or less and occasionally I ninja mine arkonor in GW.
Mostly all done in cruisers, indy's and frigates with standard mods and no implants. Much fun and no mining or treadmill.

I agree with Sochin, but I alter the approach a bit to make it more interesting. While I do take ppls stuff (ISK) I: a) Don't kill them in a physical-virtual way (because I hear the "awh, you're killing me" all the time) b) Make them thank me for doing so

Well i guess the first part of the 2nd poster (the one after u) kinda said it to me. Getting that uber setup, so u can do whatever u like. im in-game for like over 10 months now, this BS i have is my second (i had some time of not playing too)
And last night i spend like 2 or 3 hours getting my setup just right. I guess thats what drives me, trying not to just get my BS, but get it EVIL!!!
Besides some guy blew my alt up just saterday after 2 hours of hard work, 7km out of a station, so i have to hurt him somewhere in the future too :)
And offcourse there is my corp, all wonderfull guys, and together its just more fun. I play with and for them, and visa versa. We just got our first original bp, so we obviously are hungry for more I guess what im saying is, fun is a goal at itself.
and try to get that rig of yours to be special, get some named **** and all, u 2 want to take the uber spawns on right?
Well anyway, hope u'll have a good time around. Im sure ill have one ------------------------ Remember, my child: Without innocence the cross is only iron, hope is only an illusion & Ocean Soul's nothing but a name...

That's just wrong
I mean - a battleship has indeed the greatest firepower, but it can still be defeated by frigs/cruisers, and many ppl fly around in battleships these days.

Edited by: Harisdrop on 14/09/2004 14:48:13 Funny. The game is not what you own! Its what you do.
Eve is not a normal game. There is not beginning no end. You will never reach the top. You play to be with others.
The game can be anything you want it to. You are the game master. There are a million things you can do but you cant do a million things. There is soo much that is not being done.
The game is a mystery, suspense and horror all in one. I can tell you that battle might be the greatest rush you will ever experience in any game. The biggest ship does not always win.
I say bless you to those that feel comfortable cause thats when you find that what you know or think becomes invalid. --------------------------

A lot of the prior posters here have indicated the 'things' that keep them going. What keeps a person going in any situation?
If this were a shard based hack/slash with the standard mmo frills, I wouldn't have an answer for you. Eve is a persistant universe in one place. What happens here can mean or affect EVERYONE in its universe.
If you come to eve with the idea that its just a 'cool' game to be 'won', then you're gonna be bored or 'over' it in time. It isn't about that. Eve online has a rich and amazing history even in the short time that its been open.
We have player run governments, civil wars, and not wars that get reset over downtime, but conflicts that drag on, politics that have become more intricate than some real life counterparts.
We have thieves, and "yarrr" pirates. We have businessmen and corporate intrigue. We have famous and infamous. In short a VR "life" that actually has a 'real' feel to it.
To look at Eve as 'what's next?' is to take the 'gamer' approach and miss the rich tapestry and depth of its inhabitants. In real life we all look for meaning and a 'reason for being'.
It is no different in a VR persistant world. Those that seek the next patch to fix things, well for them it probably will in the short run, but a few months after that they'll be wondering the same things and the posts of "I'm bored" will flow again. Those of us who are here for the interaction and playing a part in a new story, we'll still be here, as we know that WE ARE THE GAME. WE MAKE IT WORTH OUR TIME.
My opinion and take on Eve, your mileage can vary.

I know how you feel, I've played on and off for 11 months. I quit once before some 6 months ago through shear boredom. I wouldn't have been back either only I had not realised I had taken out a 6 months subscription.
Now I find myself at the same point again, I login, look at the screen and think, 'hmmn whats the point' and log out again and play something with content but not so pretty looking.
I question why I am paying for 2 a/c's which I am hardly playing. The things the kept me going before was the desire for a battleship and to get into PvP. Having done both and being disappointed with both there are no more goals for me. My bank balance today is approx 500,000,000 - so need to mine or rat hunt or trade. PvP consists of loitering at gates for hours on end in the vain hope we may catch an insta-jumping frigate or outnumbering a force and watch them safespot and fight you with torrents of abuse or vis-a-versa. I don't use my BS for PvP because you can't lock anything, so I hang about in a Rifter. If we are lucky we will get a few kills for hours of just hanging doing nothing. For PvP action I play Unreal, for content I play EQ, chatting about space ships.....Eve.
The only thing that is keeping my subscription alive at the moment is Shiva. I'll give it a month after its release.....

people who play MMOGs (or MMORPGs) are obsessed with progression, often to the point where the feeling of progression (levelling) becomes the reason they play the game
this is a bad thing, when this happens you SHOULD quit |

What keeps me flying is my crew. We have a lot of fun togheter building on our assets, traveling the universe and meeting people. As a former poster stated we set short term and long term goals and work to achieve them. Amongst us we cover the whole range of Tranquility live. We gather, hoard and share as an collective and the whole group plucks the fruits of the individual achivements.
As for this 'go for the biggest ship'. That never been my goal. I've been flying my Thorax ever since I was able to and still enjoying every moment of it.
And now we have Shiva comming, loads of candy for grabs there

The people , simple as that. Some nights I dont even like the game and wonder why Im still here but then we have a laugh on TS and it makes quitting unthinkable.
If they finally addressed the all seeing map and unfindable safespotting I think it might get my adrenalin pumping again but right now its stale and predictable ....but strangley addictive.
So HMV consider Andy Williams and Dean Martin to be "easy listening" do they? Tell that to my mate Dave, he's been deaf for 20 years.

The best thing you can do is get out of the powergaming mindset. Start taking part in Eve pilotics and wars. Even minimal roleplaying will give the you that little bit extra and give you reasons to work towards goals not related to getting bigger ships/more isk.
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |

Hmm, didnt we have one of these the other day?..
Anyway;
Mine is most definately the community. Without all my corp mates and friends to have a laugh and a joke with, and all my enemies to talk smack too, without all the trolls to needlessly jump onto threads were involved in (Hi Aneu) I would of been gone long ago...
By the way Powder has kindly set up a Public Teamspeak for anyone in the community to drop in and chat to one another. Try to keep it relatively civil though, I heard one or two of us are adults; though im not sure Sass Arcane Technologies |

To have fun, play online with a bunch of other peeps looking for fun...
I like to take a break from RL and play EVE, too bad CCP has made this game more frustrating & more like RL work than it should be... ------------------------------------------------ "for piece sakes!" |

I'll tell you whats rewarding.....
Going back to low end cruisers and frigs when youve got over 5 mill skill points and rediscovering them in pvp. Higher skills means that they become much more flexible, and you can sure as hell shock people when you turn up and start owning them in your incursus or tristan....whooop!
plus they are disposible as hell :) _______________________________
