Hi Guys,
My wife wants us to get a Mac for the family and ditch the ageing PC. Not too sure how i feel about this, but i love the look of that 24" screen!
I heave read on the forum that the eve client for the Mac is not as good as windows and to expect about 40fps at best. That is a big step down from my Dell laptop....
However, i hear you can also run windows on a Mac? wtf!? Is anyone doing that? If so, do you get the same performance as a comparable spec PC? I also have to consider TS, EveMon & EFT but i take it there are mac versions of those?
Please forgive the somewhat noob questions but the closest thing i have come to a Mac is to see a friend using one for like 2 minutes!
Any help/opinions would be appreciated! Ty :) Kabe |

Welcome to the darkside of EVE Online.
not to be confused with piracy : O )
The iMac 24" Should be capable of running EVE Online... provided you stick with the Nvidia GPU and shove as much VRAM as possible into it... cant recall but I think you can get a 512MB variant.
You should also make sure you get 4GB of ram as well.
The Mac Client at least to me.... seems to be stable and playable enough to equate it with windows... however... the FPS is going to be lower... and you may run into some glitches every so often depending on the current state of your system.
As far as running windows on the mac... yes.. that is in fact true.
Is it suggested as a way of playing EVE? Not really no.
You can run eve in the following forms:
Current client - Runs in a Cider/WINE translation which attempts to understand winblows craptastic code and then for the most part allows you to play EVE just fine... which is the current supported format in CCP's eyes.
Results of current client - Patching is a bit hazardous... suggest you be hesitant and be very patient when it glitches out. Personally I've not see one problem so far.... I guess I Get lucky (knocks on wood and pets his macbook pro 15" aluminum)
VMWare Fuzion - Running windows in a window... requires a copy of windows XP Pro (Recommended).. not heard much... but some have succeeded... takes a bit of work...and graphics are a issue...
Paraellels - Much like above... but not as user friendly as it once was
Crossover - Don't even try.... unless your willing to search and scan for how toos.. technical skills may be a good idea here.
VMBox - Open source and free... but not much data here.... its similar to VMWares fuzion as its a cousin... but thats about it.
Apples Boot Camp - So far the BEST alternative solution is this one here.... using Apples boot camp wizzard... you install windows on an alternate partiiton/volumn and you should see an acceptible windows client of EVE Online functioning there...
Bottom line - Don't have high expectations... you'll live longer that way. Personally i've been pleased... the only complaint I have is low FPS and some glitching here and there... but I can play EVE just as easily and as well as my winblows tower... and for alot less money as far as power bills go. It actually looks better than my SLI'ed tower... but not as smooth. You'll get alot of debating.. argumentation... and screaming over here... so filter it out... and take a pinch of salt with you.
Im an Apple Certified professional... with apple care credentials... I know the hardware and I know the product lines pretty well as I sell and fix this stuff.
I don't work for Apple..and I certainly Don't worship them... they have some.... issues I don't particularly like.
But I find playing eve on my macbook more enjoyable over windows regardless.
You can't run EFT/EVEMon and such apps on mac yet.... there are people developing them.
You could however run a windows emulation or the suggested above methods to load said apps.
Right now I use EVE Skill Widget monitor to track my toons...and my iPhone has its own take on that.
I would dig in if I could use EVEHQ on my mac... but that would require a Virtual Windows type environment.
So... in short.. hold on to your hat.... eventually CCP will streamline this client and make it scream and look mighty fine.
They have come a very long ways in the last few months... contrary to popular opinion.
just don't rage/quit ok?

If you want.. feel free to eve mail and we can chat in game.
I also suggest you keep your dell near by... odds are your wife will continue to use the iMac if you give up on it.
Again.. don't have high expectations... its better to keep them low as then if you do get surprsied your better off.
It might not hurt to give me a snapshot (stuff your going to buy) of what your going to buy... I try to "Trim the fat"
You don't need to spend an arm and a leg to get anywhere with a mac.
Good luck either way!

One option you can consider if trying to cut the budget is either a good second-hand or officially shop-reconditioned iMac.
I personally play Eve on the mid-2007 24" iMac 2.8GHz Core2Duo with the ATI HD2600Pro 265Mb card. I recently upgraded the RAM to 4Gb from the factory-fitted 2Gb (if you are in the UK, scan.co.uk do apple-endorsed mac memory at a good price).
After making the config-file changes listed on the sticky posts in this forum, I get a comfortable 40-75fps in solo and small group play in medium textures and medium shaders (shadows and bloom off). It may not be the best and most gorgeous, but it looks plenty good enough, is smooth when playing and is nice and stable.

One more thing you might want to consider if she is having second thoughts... going for the iMac (rather than the Mac Pro) means that you get rid of the huge box under the table. The iMac is SO tidy it is unbelievable.
Once you get over the PC-lover's need to open and fiddle with the hardware (which you can't do on an iMac without specialist tools anyway), your computer desk will love you forever!
The speakers on the iMac, though small, are more than adequate for playing the game plus any music you like at modest volumes (if you need to listen in private, any good pair of headphones with a 3.5mm jack will do - I use a pair of Klipsch Custom-1 earbuds). You soon get used to the shiny screen - careful placement will get round any bad reflection issues.
Once budget permits, get yourself an external Firewire800 HDD for TimeMachine to use. If your electricity supply is a little dodgy, then the iMac fits nicely within the recommended headroom of the APC RS800 UPS.

The newer iMac's seem to be better off last I checked.... so if you can afford it.. go for it.
The UPS Suggestion is a very good idea... make sure the UPS uses voltage regulation or is power conditioned... most UPS's are good at battery back up power but will not prevent or protect brownouts or undervoltage/overvoltage's.
Most common UPS's do a good bit of work...but the extra feature makes sure its rock solid. ========================= CEO of Shadow Cadre http://www.shadowcadre.com ========================= Dependable, Honorable, Intelligent, No-nonsense Vote Herschel Yamamoto for CSM! |

I bought the same 24" iMac he's describing and run eve mac client with zero modifications from the OS X that it shipped with. Out of the box, there was only one Eve problem I noticed and that had to do with dust particles looking like bits of stored photos from the VRAM. A few change/apply/re-change/apply cycles on the gfx options page fix those when they rarely occur (recycling VRAM). Otherwise, its a beautiful game on a beautiful system. 1920x1200 works like a dream with no noticeable lag or performance issues that I've come across.

I'm having no issues running EVE on my 2008 ALU 24" iMac. So I reckon you shouldn't have any either. Next to that it's indeed possible to run Windows XP / Vista / 7 via a tool called Bootcamp, which allows your Mac to boot up Windows like it where a regular PC.
And by the way. Welcome to the light side of the computer universe.
