Edited by: Ralara on 10/06/2009 09:11:19 Never actually having looked at this part of the game before, I hear datacores and decryptors etc are worth lots of money and you can farm agents for them.
How does this work exactly?
I've suicide ganked people in haulers carrying hundreds of the damn things. I don't know where they come from or what they do - but I know they sell for a lot of isk... or some of them can, anyway.
So where do I get them from? :) --

There are 2 links in that post that will help you.
Some further info in the science forum
2 links to invention; they should have some info on R&D in them too and it would be useful to know what datacores do.

You need to find a research agent, see what skills it requires, and then let him do research for you and you can cash in your research points for datacores. Keep in mind this will not make you rich seeing as how pretty much everyone is doing it and the market is flooded.

Because Minmatar ships smell like garbage, Amarr ships smell like incense and that stuff, Caldari ships smell like a hospital, and Gallente ships smell like French people.

meh if it's a passive income where i dont need to do anything/a lot, I'm not gonna turn it down. It's free isk afterall. |

(cough) It will take a while before you have that 40.000.000,00 skillbook earned back this way not to forget to train the agent skills then grind your way up to that level 4 agent which is quit daunting since most research npc corps have very few, if any, (lv4) combat agents.
So I wouldn't call it free. |

Easy ISK, yes... free, no You still need to grind the needed standings (especially for the better agents, where you need pretty high R&D NPC corp standings too, not just high faction standings which you may, or may not already have), and the skills needed aren't exactly free either (you're looking at 50 mil ISK if you have none of the relevant ones yet), taking some time to learn (both the skills themselves to decent enough levels, and the prerequisites too, since you probably don't have those either). And AFTER you start the research, you still need to travel to each of those agents, pick up the cores, and move them to a place where they would sell adequately - you're probably looking at a 50 to 90 jumps trip (from your usual highsec location, to each agent, then to some market hub) if you plan to have 5 decent agents in a reasonable enough field... and the less often you do the pick-up, the more value you'll end up transporting in a single run, increasing the chance of suicide-ganks. On top of it all, you're looking at 150 mil ISK/month per character tops, if you only get the best agents in the higher-paying fields and skill up the relevant science skills to L5... a more reasonable figure would be a bit lower than 100 mil ISK/month/character.

oh screw that then, I'll stick to corp thefts :) --

Do any of the social skills help in lp or standing gain? I was thinking high tech, but it doesn't specifically call out R&D. Thanks for any help

Social skills will aid you in building standing faster, and earning LP for all corps. They will not affect the amount of RP earned with R&D agents, to my knowledge.
There are sometimes benefits to doing normal, level 4 missions with R&D focused corps. Check their LP store and you may find 5-run BPCs for certain faction Navy items, that are expensive to obtain from a Navy LP store. Typically faction navy items require LP, isk, and tags. The BPCs are much less expensive.

Oh it's not that bad ...
It's 10 million ISK to buy a skill like Mechanical Engineering.
Now - you do want to train that skill as high as you can - as the higher your skill level - the more RP you will get from your agent.
Also - the higher the Level of the Research Agent the more RP they will give you.
Then they will offer you a mission almost every day. If you talk to them - then you want to do the mission so they'll keep offering and so you don't lose standings with them - but if you don't talk to them and request a mission - you don't have to do it. If you do the mission - it will pretty much double the RP you get for that day. Missions are always either a Special Delivery Courier mission or Some Trit. The higher the agent the more trit. But level II agents ask for 900 units ... so ... it's not like it's hard to come up with. Just go mine/refine/buy once a month and you're good.
That 40 mil skill - is to be able to control multiple agents. So - yes - if you really want to max out your potential earnings here - then you'll need that skill. And - you'll need to visit all your agents now and again to gather them in. And - you'll need to buy more skills if you want them to research different things. And - you'd need to fly to each one each day and do their mission if you want to double your RP with them. I think the max is like 5 agents.
So - there's a relatively low cost low return way of doing this - where you buy the skill book for one skill, train it to level IV or V, get one agent and just let them research away with no involvement from you. Come by every so often and buy data cores from your agent with your reasearch points (150 RP buys 1 data core for like Amarr Starship Engineering). And yeah ... to avoid people like Ralara ... you might consider using a covert ops ship ... (data cores are small so they don't take up much room) - that or you could just sell them on the spot. A lot of the research agents are in industrial hubs so you might be able to get a good price for them right there. A fact to consider when picking your agent. If you are just doing this for money - then pick your market first and then see if there are any agents there - then train whatever skill they require.
Like anything else in EVE ... if you want to make a lot of money off of something - it's going to cost you a fortune to get set up - but - if you're satisfied with just a little - or you want to start small and grow - that isn't that hard to do.
Which is of course ... the reason everyone and their brother is doing it ... which has caused the prices to drop ...
Check the market for data cores and see what you think.

This is incorrect. Negotiation dramatically increases RP/day.

Hi ralara welcome to eve
I have an alt with a bunch of rp now, trained up research project management talked to 4 or so agents and kinda forgot about it. 65-70k rp at this point. got the skills up for invention anyways.
so well I'm sitting on a bit of isk if everything goes to hell I guess. now if I had like 10 chars doing it it would be very nice. although probably more of a pain in the ass then anything else.
