Ok, I got some bad gripes with the 'new' star map since it came out and took away the vertical +360 spin-ability. What was worse, it also took away it s readability.
* Single stars that doesnt match the current filter selceted doesnt show up cus they are too faint.
* The lines between stars indicating stargate connections are too dark.
* When you try to click something when you are zoomed in you easily click on something else cus click detection zones overlap making for poor selection precision.
The list goes on.
Main issue:
The star map is too hard to read and all cluttered up. Why cant we have some custom options for it so we can set our own colors, intensities and filters?
Maybe there is a way that I haven t found to filter out the interfering galactic backdrop of redundant visual information such as if I want to look at Minmatar sov space only, I can tick something somewhere and all I see on the starmap are systems belonging to the Minmatar Republic and then I can apply all other filters to it.
It could apply to a constellation or a region as well.
Are there ways of accomplishing this already or would you think it d be useful if there was such means of controlling what is displayed on the starmap?
Raise a hand let them see there are people out there caring for the star map and want to give it a second chance. |

Oh well, I guess that proves I m all alone in this cold and harsh universe with my fetish for star maps.

I don't experience any of the problems you mentioned. Starmap is already extremely modifiable, and user friendly. You can change the color of the lines, of the stars, which stars, lines, labers to show, etc.
The only problem that sometimes happens is this: "* When you try to click something when you are zoomed in you easily click on something else cus click detection zones overlap making for poor selection precision."
But this only happens sometimes on overlaping stars, and is easily solvable by unflattening the starmap. |

Are you kidding me??? You seriously LIKE the current map?
The current starmap is a blobby mess. Even when using flattened mode, you can't see anything easily at all because of all the overlaps of lines and stars. The second you view stars by security status, everything becomes unreadable because every single star in the galaxy is showing even though you only want to see the current region's. Overlaping lines are extremely hard to track because the lines are not jumping over another, they are just crossing (no little curve to indicate a line is above another). The colors and alpha blending of stars also make it extremely hard to use. For example, if you try to view stars by number of players in space, you have to much glow in some areas that you can't even tell which star the glow is coming from!
I ended up buying the strategic maps from eve-maps.com because of this.
I agree with the OP on this, the starmap is a mess and needs a major overhaul. The only way the starmap could be made actually useful is by making it look just like the paper maps of eve-maps.com or something similar. Get rid of all the blur and alpha blending, and make things opaque and easy to read, with defined edges and proper colors, and show less stars at the same time.
I'm sure there's a way to make it much better. |

I always loved it. Unless they changed anything since 2-3 months ago

OP is absolutely right, the starmap is nearly useless. A while ago, I said this and I stand by it.

I guess it depends how much you actually use the starmap and what filters you use with it.
For example, let's say you want to plot a route of a few good high-sec systems you want to probe in. You open the map, zoom in on your current position, set stars to show by security status (which highlights every star on the map), play with the camera for a few minutes until you get to an angle where you can see something properly, and then try to right-click good systems (i.e. only systems from 0.5 to 0.7) to add them as waypoints.
Just doing that with the current map system, whether you're in 3D or flattened view, is extremely hard. It's hard because you can't easily follow lines from one star to the other (i.e. to get systems that are close together or next to each other), there's just too much overlapping. Sometimes it's also very hard to see if a star on the map belongs to the current constellation or not, or even the same region or not, because you can see every star!
Just try to manually plot a route through a few constellation by sorting the

CCP probably thoroughly hates me by now for all the times I've slammed their starmap. And you're right it's still a mess even though they have fix a few things. I used to liken it to a paper map in the glove box of your car, that every time you looked back up at the road it would magically re-fold itself and jump back into the glove box. At least now it tends to remember how you had it positioned the last time you opened it.
BUT CCP, THE HOVER CRAP HAS GOT TO GO!!! I've been saying this for 2 years now and nothing has been done. I've convinced myself that some dev, who clearly lacks an understanding of good UI principles, loves it in its currently awful state and refuses to let anyone give it a decent overhaul.
Grab the map with the mouse and start dragging, your mouse WILL accidently run over the top of a star at which point the map stops in mid-drag and hover popups start spamming the user with unwanted info. WHAT?! YOU'VE GOT TO BE FREAKIN' KIDDING ME!
HOVER MUST DIE! Put the output in a fixed window and let the user resize and place it where he/she wants. Now the map would be so much better. No crappy hover popups going off the top of the screen or popping up behind other windows. No popups hiding the surrounding star systems that you really need to see.
And get rid of the collision planes! If I want to zoom the map in until there's only 1 star on the screen then I should be able to do it. Let me set a fade out backplane in light years after which all stars are clipped out so I can freely view the local area in an uncluttered way.
----- I've said it before, I'll say it again - CCP hates logistics players. FIX THE CONTAINERS! |

Ok, so I was messing with the starmap yesterday.. Looking around different regions and all... and it turns out they did screw up the map. I was unable to select a region so that only selected regions stars are shown... this was quiet annoying and frustrating as differentiating between different intertwined regions is nearly impossible... PLEASE fix this...

Honestly, I wouldn't notice, I haven't used the star map since I found ombey maps. I've hardly so much as looked at the starmap now since my corp tossed me a copy of ombey on like my first week of playing.
IMO CCP should build in a copy of Ombey. DON"T CHANGE IT! IT WORKS! the only thing that would be nice would be to build in interactive interface, i.e. showing route and sov.
