What is or was the best TV series you ever saw and why? -- If there is anything in your life you fear of losing, then keep your mouth shut once in a while. |

There are many cool series but if I had to choose I would certainly go with Sliders.
It's sci-fi with infinite amount of potential (which wasn't milked nearly enough unfortunately) and it had great characters. Well, until the middle of season 3.
Overall, a great show. |

Rome
they never over-did it, it was only 2 seasons long, the acting was amazing and the story was told so well, and the characters so interesting, its prolly the only tv series that I've watched more than once.
Starts out with Julius Ceasers conquests of Gaul, his return over the rubicon to rome and his civil war with pompey, his travels to Egypt and his eventual death in the senate house at the hands of brutus is the end of season 1, season 2 is all about Gaius Ocavian Ceasar's (augustus ceasar) claim to power and his rivalry with mark anthony
anyway great tv series, one of the best ever. |

Only to squeeze in my own - Northern Exposure. It was weird and subtle, and had about right amount of irrationality to switch off one's head. |

I Would quickly add wether TV-Aired anime counts or not, otherwise this thread could end up being completely derailed |

I'd probably say The Wire, the scope of the entire 5 seasons was phenomenal with its interweaving plotlines and the dozens and dozens of main characters drifting in and out of the story. A lot of the characters were really interesting as well, of course everyone loves Omar - the shotgun wielding gay bloke who robs drug dealers for a living - but got to give special mention to Clay "sheeeeeeeit" Davis. |

Patrick McGoohan's "The Prisoner".
Not really sure why - some of the episodes are a bit chumpy, but it's always been a fascinating TV series. Sci-fi, 60's psychadelia, cold war undertones, spies, etc.
Apparently a brand new series has already been shot. Dunno much about it, but I'll be watching that when it shows up - hope they don't bastardise it too much. |

I second this.
Blane is right though, if we include anime this list is going to get messed up, so I wont list the absolute best stuff I have seen. |

The Wire.
By a very long shot better that anything else I've seen on TV.
A slow burner, they spend tons of time setting the characters up. Expects the viewer to pay attention and doesn't recap or spoon feed you. Refreshing to be treated like an adult who can make that decision what he wants to watch.

Carnivale
Haven't seen much like it and they went ahead and cancelled it mid-finish...
The atmosphere and story telling was different to any other series I've watched. If you haven't seen it, do so, despite its cancellation. It's worth it.
Great show.
