Don't jetcan mine. Problem solved. :) There are strategies that are just as efficient, and even safer.

Basically just don't do it, and if you do, know that people can and will take your stuff. <shrugs>

Yes... anchored Secure Cans last until collected, or someone blows them up. |

this^ + GSC = win
Since I do a lot of solo mining, I tried to find a way to safely haul as much as possible.
The trick was to fit a Hulk with Expander II and Optimizer I (since T2 rigs cost WAY TOO MUCH usually). Then to fill the hold with GSC.
17,199 m3 worth of cargo space. 5x GSC = 15,000 m3 (19,500 capacity) 1x HSC = 1,500 m3 (1,950 capacity) 1x LSC = 650 m3 (780 capacity) 49 m3 remaining for... whatever.
With a small investment, you go from 17,199 to 22,279 m3.
Mining is as simple as jetting a couple empty GSC into space to make room for the initial ore to fall. Then drag and drop into the safely stored containers. When those are full, top off the couple floating and scoop those as well.
If anyone tries to hassle you or flip the unanchored GSC, they'll see they're empty until the end of your mining op. |

Well, not exactly. They used to last forever, but we got a clean up a few patches ago, that put a timer on them. If they are not used once per month, they disapear.

Edited by: Amelia Ryan on 03/07/2009 01:18:13 This is how i mine, think it's about the safest method for high sec if you have no defense. But it requires you to have an alt though. Lots of people who mine use a second account to skill for a hauler.
I mine in a hulk with everything on it for the best yield, survey scanner shield boost, no cargo extenders.
My hauler alt sits next to the hulk with an occator (hauler) fitted for max cargo. I jettison a jetcan and keep only 1 ore in it at all time. Everytime my hulk is full of ore:
- Check if anyone is around you.
- put ore from miner in jetcan
- put ore except 1 from jetcan in hauler immediatly
- Fly hauler to station when full
- warp to hulk with hauler when empty, by the time im back hulk isn't full yet anyway.
In other words, i never keep ore in a jetcan for more then 5 seconds, except for 1 ore, otherwise the jetcan explodes.
Edit: just saying how i do it, i know you just started playing and you don't have a hulk or big hauler yet.

Badger I with 2 cargo expanders is 4 trips per jetcan - which is a heck of a lot faster than my current Retriever, was a TON faster than my DD, and takes almost no time to train up enough to fly it.
Once I get to Hulk, though, I won't bother jetcanning.

Jetcan mining is equivalent to a soldier shooting themselves in the foot. Solves the immediate problem, but leaves you with a limp for the rest of your life. don't be a pu$$... stop jetcan mining, learn to play the game strategically, and be successful. sheesh...

I think what she meant to say was do not take the ore back out of a container the thief puts your ore into. Doing this will get you shot many times.
Jet can if you must but your best bet is not to do it alone. Have someone haul for you or your group until you can afford an orca and pilot to take your ore directly into it's cargo, bypassing the can all together.

TIP: Create a bookmark called CAN HOLDER and drag it into the can. This way you can take all the ore without having to split the stack.

You can't be serious !
GSC's suck, way too small. And ehm.. again 'you can't be serious'.. cargo expanders and cargo rigs on a hulk ?
I only mine using jetcans and thiefs don't steal from me, well sofar. (it's been 6 years)
Topic Starter : Get into a good player controlled corporation which mines in groups. 8 Hulks with 2 Orca's on the scene, with 1 or 2 HAC's on standby in station. Most of the time wannabe thiefs check the age of the characters that are mining, having a few corpmates next to you with 2+ years of eve on their character will hold of most low lifes. The 'recent' changes which now aggroes the whole corp if someone is robbed of his/her ore, allows for effective counters on thiefs.
Remain in your noob corp and mine solo.. well your in for a world of pain :)

A tip for jetcan mining: rename the canister to have your name and a timestamp on it, like "Glaed 2256", so that you can know when it's time to start moving your ore into a new can.

You really do a lot of solo mining? Not on paper? Hmmm... Unachored GSCs at a quarter mil a pop floating around your Hulk? Who needs to flip them - simply collect and sell them back to you .
Cargo Expanders fitted Hulk should output ~4K m3/cycle filling the hold in just over 12 minutes time. Align to a station while mining to minimise transit time - you'll be back mining away in less than 3 minutes risk free (can flipping wise) and without the need for a "small investment" .
