I see a lot of threads about what they SHOULD be for, but was wondering... What are they used for now? People do buy them, of what use are they, why use one over a regular carrier?

Huge difference between different corps/alliances. Size of them, what kind of ops (or not), etc. |

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying Misanth
Originally by: Misanth Huge difference between different corps/alliances.
Do you mean, The use depends on whether its for a corp or an alliance?
Originally by: Misanth Size of them
Size of there cargo and drone bay?
Originally by: Misanth what kind of ops (or not), etc.
Yea, "what kind of ops" is sorta my question. So what sort of ops is it used for?

It varies from different corporations, and sometimes alliances. Some corporations use them in X way, some alliances in Y way. It means that sometimes you might be in an alliance where you use them in X fashion with your corp, and Y fashion with the alliance. I.e. depending on what you need them for.

The sizes of the ops. Sometimes you use a MS for a 2man operation. Sometimes you use them for several thousand of players, as a mobile platform to move ships/ammo. In the very big/small ops, it's unlikely the mothership will fight, in the medium size it's less likely that you face dreads (and still you got enough support with you), etc. It has quite a massive impact on gameplay.
Originally by: Whackamoley Yea, "what kind of ops" is sorta my question. So what sort of ops is it used for?
That's what I just explained on both first questions. Put it this way; * Some corporations (or alliances) use them as mobile bases, stocked with ammo etc. * Some alliances uses them for massive fleet ops, to support the frontline with interdictors and similar. * Some alliances uses them for defence, sitting at a POS assigning fighters. * Some corporations, alliances, or hell even single players, uses them to do specific tasks that is pretty uncommon - but tailored to fit the particular player.
I.e. it's impossible to tell you what motherships do, as they fill so many roles. Virtually it's just up to whoever flies it, or their corporation/alliance, to decide what they're useful to. And it would be pretty ignorant to just see one use (or no use) for them, as they can play parts in situations other people havn't figured out (or dare use them to).
There is no simple short answers for them. They're multipurpose ships. And tbh, in some way, the carriers are too. |

During POS takedowns, they're pretty good at incapping modules. Fighters V and racial carrier V - which are pre-reqs for any sane MS pilot - put out a lot of dps. |

I've seen a fair number of motherships used in low sec hotdrops. Seems to work pretty well for them. |

They do what a carrier does but slightly better. They're lacking a real role these days, being obliterated by dread fleets in seconds and all. |

Well they need buffing a lot to give them more roles(flame away with the OMG it will be overpowered emo comments)
At the moment they have only verry limited uses and only brave pilots use them in actual combat
basicly they used to fit the description of SUPERCAPITAL. Today most people say they are useless expensive carriers that scream "PRIMARY ME!!" buff needed It`s a SUPERCAPITAL it is meant to be overpowered |

Most FCs want Dred pilots so they can take down enemy POS and other cap ships.
If you can fly a Dred, there are more 0.0 corps who will want to recruit you. The NEW M.Corp Data Hub - Check it out! |
