Can anyone confirm where these are most useful? I have been recieving conflicting information, and really want to settle my thoughts on it. Is it useful for gunboats, or they primarily support for missles?
Please help. |

I've heard they are great for graffiti tagging Minmatar stations. |

they help with turret tracking, not just missiles
also help with lock time for slower lock ships like BS
frequently overlooked except in PvE. probably most used by stealth bombers these days in PvP.

Edited by: Vrabac on 15/06/2009 20:45:27 You can't really hope to use torps efficiently without at least 1, even against BS. Wouldn't undock in a phoon without painter tbh. And raven can always use heavy TP drones.
The other day friend of mine did the unthinkable and switched one web on rapier for a painter when we went for a phoon + rapier trip. Should have seen what happened to some poor astarte we ran into...
Generally speaking they aren't really broadly useful and therefore not widely used, but for those situations where they are needed they are priceless. However for gunboats you're probably better off with a tracking comp unless you have gang members who use missiles.

TPs shine when not all the transversal is caused by your enemies. If you're moving at any decent pace, then slowing the enemy down isn't necesarily going to help much with hitting them. TPs work best in this situation.

A target painter with any level of the advanced skill (Sig Focusing) behind provides a greater increase to tracking than that provided by a tracking-scripted tracking computer, and provides that greater increase to your entire gang.

Hi,
Do medium drones also benefit from painted targets?
Just for me to understand - is a target with high transversal easier to hit when the target is painted? |

Also, Target Painters are one of the few modules that stack without penelty!
So enough TP's on a BS can make it's sig so big a citadel torp will do max dmg to it. |

Target Painters increase the signature of the target (I am not sure if they stack and/or have stacking penalities). For turrets it does help. Here is the forumula:
Turret hit chance = ((1/2)^((((Transv/(Range*Tracking))*(Sig_Res/Sig_Rad))^2) +((max(0,Range-Optimal))/Falloff)^2))
The Vigil and Hyena have a bonus to target painters. Experiment with a sniper set up versus a fast small frigate and use a Vigil with a TP and notice the damage difference. Will a TP make every hit better? No, there is still other factors. However, it is a factor in hitting with a turret.

I noticed I was able to hit smaller ships (like a blackbird) with my Hyperion's guns just by painting it. It was about to pop when it permajammed my ass.
