For those with limited function or accessibility to the real-world eve has become a tool for social interaction.
Despite the horrible interface, time-sinks and deliberate UI gaps, the game has become quite popular with anyone in this position.
I propose like the economist CCP has hired they also have a accessibility group which reviews increments to the engine against their own test-cases. This body could also work on ensuring various human interface devices (HID) work with the engine and possibly even working with manufacturers to improve some of these devices with experiences gained from eve users.
They could even go onto advocacy, introducing people trapped in hospital beds to the game as a form of therapy.
Imagine for a moment you're in this situation and how much eve could mean to your quality of life. Imagine that the latest patch made your HID stop working.....

Being in a family that has a high percentage of it's members who are visually impaired I fully support moves to bring new interface technologies to the game that enables people with disabilities or illnesses to enjoy the game.
Whether it's to keep them occupied, allow them to play games despite being blind for example. I'm all for it.
I know a lot of the technology already exists for visually impaired people to use speech recognition software to use everyday appliances and computers. The technologies do exist.
For sure a visually impaired person may have difficulties in being involved combat but EVE being EVE there is much more to the game then fighting that could be enjoyed by a much wider audience if certain technologies were introduced into the game. |

Funny that, hospitals and retirement homes are buying Wii's to use as therapy. But yeah, considering how simple it is to control the ship in eve (hehe, for me at least), I don't see why not. First time I heard about a disabled person playing eve, I realized that it's probably a really good game for it.

Fully supported. Usability and accessibility should be a structural element of design either way.

I like where this is going. I don't think we can force CCP to do anything, but raising it as a possibility for them to consider is something I think is worthwhile. |

bump....
If I can get functional requirements like "We need some buttons on the side of the screen that move the mouse-wheel for suck-puff mouse users who have been nerfed by the removal of zoom buttons".... Then I'll be happy to donate time to coding lil HID utils like this.... I'm not the personality type to take on the evangelist and organisational stuff, would be nice if someone came along who could take this idea to the next level and start running with it.
Far as the CSM is concerned, this one isn't just a proposal to be brought up at one meeting then "we've already discussed that". Instead this is an issue that can be taken on-board and developed by the CSM or by the community or by CCP. Just someone has to do something.
It'd be nice if the CSM would re-touch this one at every meeting, examining progress and seeing how things can be better organised to provide a conduit for this specific segment of the eve community.

And not to be materialistic weasel in the group but...it can't hurt CCP's rep any to be able to market themselves as "the MMO that cares" or something. --Vel

Think what's really needed is a person with the mind-set and some understanding of the HID market who can activitly seek out accessability issues that the CSM or CCP would otherwise likely not hear about. As you can imagine for some just typing out a long sentence could be a chore, for people in that situation a liason is needed who can take their issues further. If the issues can be identified then between CCP and the coders that play Eve I'm sure solutions can be found to make Eve a joy to use with limited HIDs. An area of responsibility being defined in the CSM could likely be a nice start.

bump.... kinda disappointed this hasn't been mentioned at the meetings, just needs a CSM to bring it up, to shine some light on the problem so that progress can be made.

Hmm, interesting idea given the game has a pretty wide spectrum of possible activities, can indeed see potential here to get at least part of the game contents accessibility improved without unreasonable efforts.

I'll bring this forward in a meeting.
In fact I already spoke to a few CCP about this a few weeks ago when I was in Iceland. I'll do it again during Fanfest. |

Awesome!
Exactly what it needs, a little convo here and there over time will gain traction.

Edited by: Bomberlocks on 05/10/2009 03:25:09 Absolutely! The UI is terrible and even minor change would aid both handicapped and other players.
Edit: I work as a Sysadmin in a design company that has a well respected interaction design department. If CCP doesn't have the resources or the UI skills to do this, I'm sure that there are many, including my company, who could do this. Convo me in game or send me an evemail for my email addy if there is a need.

Recently I came up with a similar idea, I wanted to make my own thread about it much later but since you're allready on the same track I might aswell add my idea to yours.
A couple of years back a study was done in the Netherlands to try to find out how many people have self-harm issues. Shockingly, the numbers they came up with is that 1 in 8 girls in there teens and 20s, and 1 in 30 guys of the same age admitted to it in their survey. Using those numbers over a playerbase of 300.000, assuming most of them are guys, then Eve would have 10,000 people with self-harm issues on average. However, I argue that the concentration is far higher in massive multiplayer games, since a lot of people who suffer from self-harm issues are drawn to these games. 10,000 people (on the low end of the estimation), that's a number worth thinking about, especially with that team you suggested in your original post. I'm a moderator on a self-harm forum, and have years of experience with them. And I can tell you, Eve's learning curve doesn't help their self-image. However, your suggested team can do simple things to improve the situation. To name a simple example: if you have one list that keeps track of who's best in your game, you have one best player in one catagory of fields. If you have many lists, you have many number ones in various fields, meaning more people get to feel good about themselves. It's all about feedback. Regardless of what people might think about people who have these sorts of issues, or even physical or other mental disabilities that makes life (also in Eve) harder, their numbers are hard to ignore. I fully support your idea, and I hope you'll take mental conditions like the one I just described into consideration when expanding on it.
