Relatively new, I have done some exploration and found some archaeological sites. Is the loot available there worth the training it takes to get the archaeology skill, or about the same as salvaging?

If you are going to do exploration then its worth training the skills to 4 so you can use all the cans.
The magnametric sites are inline with radar sites really with how much isk you can make, but at least if you have the skills trained then you dont have to pass them up when you come across them.
I've only done 1 mag. site in empire and I got almost nothing from it but the ones in 0.0 can drop anything from a few mil in salvage parts, to BPCs for faction towers or t2 rigs.

most of the stuff you find with archaeology is junk, but it is worth it because every now and then you come across something you can sell on the market for over 10 million. since you don't have to kill a bunch of rats or invest too much time scanning down the site, it makes it worthwhile to have the skill.

it can be quite worthwhile to have in 0.0 (tech 2 rig bpcs with only 10% wastage) I hear most empire stuff is poor quality though. although I did get some tech 2 salvage from the one site I did find. |

In hisec, it probably isn't worth it, as sites are hard to find. Lowsec is much better, and nulsec even more so. Wormholes make the most (a few hundred million clearing out all the sites in a class 3 for example). |

This.
If you are only going to do high sec exploration and you are a remotely new character you'll almost certainly be better off training other things.
Magnetometric (archeology) sites generally have a mix of salvaging and analyzing cans which seems to favour salvaging. Hi sec sites also drop incredibly ****ty loot. So you're potentially giving up less than half of very little.
If you are a noob then you probably don't need it to more than 3. I think that's what mine is at and I have yet to find a low sec/frontier wormhole site that I couldn't analyze. If you are the analyzing peon for a zero zero corp or dangerous+ wormhole space then 4 would be a good idea. |

Same thing, except you use a different module on a different target.

A corpmate does exploration exclusively. He's got a POS in a wormhole too. He always has billions in his wallet no matter what he spends. He's just starting to get into T3 production too.
Exploration can be very lucrative.

Well the way I look at it, you need Survey 5 which is about 4 days training. This will be of use in WH exploration which can be very lucrative.
Hacking is Electronic Upgrades which is double that training time but needed for covert ops, as well as a generally useful skill anyway.
As I like exploration and WH's training both is a no brainer for me, although if you do exploration occasionally and not do WH's I suspect the payback is low for a new character as already stated.

Archaeology is one of those skills that's good to have, even if you hardly ever use it. ______________ Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. |

Ive had T2 rig BPCs in all of the past few mag sites Ive done in 0.0, as well as T2 salvage.
Defo worth training archaeology just in case you ever come across any mag sites, although the hi-sec ones aint that great.
