I usually have one warrior, one hobgoblin and one hornet, (drones at lvl 3 currently) and the reasoning behind this is the damage types. I use one of each to cover kinetic, explosive and thermal damage, but I've read recently that it;s better to use drones of the same type and race specific ones.
What say ye, oh wise forum? |

PVE : Use drones that work best against target (see the eve survival guide for damage types or the NPC damage tables).
PVP : More difficult and personal. Depends on play style as well. If you fly solo a flight of warrior II light drones is highly advised to take on pesky tackling interceptors. Hammerhead II mediums are the standard for medium drones, but you might pick an unusual damage type if you suspect the enemy is heavily tanked against thermal damage, sometimes with spectacular results if they turn out to have an 'armor gap'. Using hybrids guns you are restricted to thermal/kinetic damage so drones can be useful to do explosive or whatisname damage.

I use drones mainly to kill frigs so Warriors would be the best for that but how to factor in damage modifier vs resist vs speed is overasking me. So I'd say that between Gallente and Minmatar drones you probably have the best choice.

Please understand that with several different drones that have a different speed they will not appear in firing-range of the target at the same time. The fastest drone might attack first an draw fire first..............
PVP : More difficult and personal.
Right since there is no table with the damage types of you opponents, go either for
thermal (since most ships are weak to thermal damage) or pick the fastest drones. Or the drones with the highest damage-modifier. |

i ma teaching myself this very topic - how to figure out which drones to use.
I floy a vexor and have ten medium drones in the drone bay - valkyries, hammerheads, infiltrators, and vespas. I have them setup in groups - group 1 is one of each. If that seems effective, i let them go at it. However, if i find that damage is lacking, I recall them and then send in the groups made up of all hammerheads, vespa, etc. Seems to work for me. |

I use 5 kinetic drones in PVE because they fly faster than thermal drones (dies less when drawing unwanted aggro). I also can only carry one flight of them.
Kinetic drone is best against Guristas, Angel and EoM; and is second best against Serpentis (due to their ridiculous amount of structure) and Mercenary (due to untanked PvP resists).
Thermal drones are better at EM/Therm weak rats such as Blood, Sansha and Drones.

thermal drones do more damage before resists, always.
most targets have thermal as the first or second best damage to use.

Will this might not be directly related to the question of the OP. How do the primary and secondary damage types differ?
From what I can tell most PVE enemies deal thermal damage as primary or secondary meaning you can't be wrong protecting yourself from it. As well as that most enemies seem to have at least thermal damage as the secondary weakness, which would indicate thermal dealing drones would be more suitable allround. (I don't know about their damage modifier or relative speed though). Unless off course secondary damage types are negligable compared to the primary ones.
Anyway a friend of mine swears by Gallente (kinetic) drones. |

Ow my bad, don't know how I got the idea they dealt kinetic damage. Maybe I because of Gallente hybrid turrets.
But then indeed, since thermal is the secondary weakness for most enemies as well as that Gallente drones have higher damage modifiers, it would seem that overal they deal most damage.
