I am just about to venture in to the the big bad world of PvP for the first time. Have been running Lv4 missions in a HM passive Drake for a while. Just want ppl's opinion on a good Caldari ship and fittings needed to start PvP The one piece of advice I have been given is not to fly any thing your not prepared to loose! So just wanto to know cheap basic fits for now.
Many Thanks

Old joke : Caldari, solo PVP, success... pick two
We'd really need to get more info than what you've been giving so far. Like, for instance, what are your skills, what kind of PVP you're looking for, what do the others in your gang (if there is anybody in your gang) fly, and so on and so forth.

I will probably start in FW gang. Have good skill LV's in missiles, shields and drones. Working on Navigation stuff and EWAR. Any guidance on useful skills to train would be good as well. |

Go for rails in Pvp. Seriously. The biggest disadvantage with missiles is that they have flight time and thus no instant damage.
For pvp'ing I've heard the Rook is a good ship, but not to start with. Maybe you try a ferox with blasters (close range) or stick with the drake to gain some experience. Caldari cruisers are not really a good idea. |

Yeah if you want to chip paintwork and track nothing that gets anywhere near you.

Oh. Really? I'll just go tell all the pvp Drake and Cerb pilots they're worthless because of flight time. The main time this becomes a serious handicap is the sniping cruise Ravens in major fleets.

Agreed. Great ship but if it goes wrong (and being such a luck dependant ship, it will sooner or later) you're in trouble.

Could do.

Solo I'd agree with you. Gang on the other hand- Blackbird is great, Caracal is underrated, Moa is... ehhh, wouldn't recommend that so much. Some people get decent results with blasters apparently but not tried that.
As you're just starting, I'd go with either a tackler frigate (rocket Kestrel/Merlin) or a cheap cruisers (again, can never have too many Blackbirds)
T2 frigates might be a good place to go from there, the blaster Harpy is great all round and the Crow is a good interceptor. |

Funnily enough, a Moa. Fitted with blasters it's better than most people realise. The're also cheap as chips as everyone thinks they're rubbish. |

To start out - I'd go with either the Kestrel or the Merlin.
Fit them as tacklers and go get used to getting blown up.
Insure them - as you surely will be.
The number one rule of any PVP game is that FNG's get slaughtered. It doesn't matter how much other experience you have in the game ... once you start playing against other humans it's all different.
Not having any idea what's going on is going to get you killed a lot ... oh ... did I mention jump clones ...? Do you have a lot of implants?
If you've got a lot of implants ... and don't have a jump clone ... you might want to think about a PVP alt.
That or check out Estel's Jump Clone Service. I've not used it so I can't vouch for it but it's there.

To add on to what was mentioned before:
If you are going to be with a gang, i.e. FW, then going with a Kestrel/Merlin for tackling as was recommended is a solid start. But, do not underestimate the utility of a good EW ship. The Caldari EW Frig (the name escapes me...heron perhaps?) is a very cheap ship. Seeing as how you will probably on the Caldari side of FW against the Gallente, Id fit a multispec, and a Gallente racial jammers.
There is an awesome guide on here somewhere about how to use EWAR effectively...but in the quick and dirty...dont expect to do damage, your damage is damage prevention. Stay away from the fight...if you are gate camping, dont sit on the gate...sit way back at your optimal. If you are getting ready to warp in, or jump into a battle, hesitate a bit and let the damage dealing combat ships jump first, go in a bit later so that they are engaged, then you move in and do your damage. (If you show up first, you will be targeted and made asploded).
If you want to up your cost a bit, and up your effectiveness a tad, go with the Blackbird. In my entire time in EvE, I have never once heard anyone say "Oh...he just has a blackbird." Blackbirds are always welcome in most any gang. In small unit skirmishes, a blackbird can mean the difference between a brutal defeat, and a clear victory.
People have a tendancy not to want to fly EW ships in eve because the perceived "glory" after a fight comes from doing damage and getting massive kill mails. But those who are "in the know" realize that many battles are won or lost based on who brought EWAR.
Remember the EWAR pilots motto. "You cant Kill what you cant target" |

Although Drake and PvP don't mix very well I do see HAM Drakes kill hacs and recons. |

All manners of Drakes and PvP mix very well. People who say otherwise are incompetent fools. ___________________

That's because two out of three Drake pilots you see in pvp are noobs who don't know how to fit for anything other than a massive tank. Being a brick just means you'll die last. Good Drakes sacrifice a good chunk of buffer and most of the passive regen for HAMs. Really nasty HAMs. I'm not a missile slinger but given how few people I see who actually use a HAM fit well I'd venture to say the builds are very skill intensive, both on your character sheet and in terms of real experience.
Personally, I'd rather fly a gankmobile (like a Brutix or Thorax), die a lot, and get on lots of KMs, but that's just me. I view long-term success in pvp in terms of my k/d and isk destroyed/lost ratios. This leaves room for both cheap-o and expensive fits. |

I have heard very good things about HAM Drakes and am now training toward them myself. That said, if this is your first time to PVP I suggest buying a dozen Kestrels or Merlins or Griffins and flying them until you have no more, then doing the same with cruisers. |
