I was hoping maybe a dev member could let those of using Nvidia cards know if there are any plans to make Eve compatible with newer drivers or if anyone from CCP has ever contacted Nvidia about the problems with their current drivers and Eve? Something REALLY needs to be done about this issue so Nvidia users can at long last upgrade above the 53.03's. These drivers are completely inadequate for newer games like Doom 3 and switching drivers back and forth for certain games is insanity. I would really appreciate some information from "those in the know."

The only answer you will get from "those in the know" is, "not before shiva". Anyway you should consider yourself lucky, I have a 6800 GT and can not use the 53.03 (incompatible). Strange that I should consider you lucky, after all I am the one with the 6800 GT.

It's almost as if they're using the drivers to dissuade you from playing other (newer) games, isn't it?

I was using a GF4ti4200 with some older drivers for the first week but at the weekend I slapped in my FX5950 Ultra with the latest drivers (61.77 is it?) and have had no problems.

I have a 6800 GT with the latest drivers (Version: 61.77)available from the NVidia site. I have experienced no graphical problems with Eve. Likewise with a GeForce 4 TI 400 with the same drivers. Incidentally, I also have another machine with a Radeon 9800 Pro with the latest Catalyst drivers and I have no problem there either. Not on Eve anyway. I remark on this, as I usually have problems with at least any one of them on any game :) Not helpful to you perhaps, but I wondered if these issues might be specific to individual models/brands?

It doesn't appear that anyone that replied to the original post is Minmatar, which might explain never noticing the problems with minmat station rendering.
We should probably define what the various 'problems' are:
1) the old problem set (after drivers 53.03) consisted of two fairly minor things, not seeing the content of any billboards, and having minmat stations (Like Republic Security Services) appear to be made of cotton candy or some such stuff. They definitely don't look good anyway. Those are the somewhat trivial problems, and the last patch, where rendering of the billboards was made serverside rather than local appears to have fixed the billboard problem.
2) the new, "improved" problems: I don't recall exactly which driver versions these started with but they're higher than 56.76 anyway. The new problems run all the way up to the latest beta's you can download from guru3d.com. (driver leaked approximately yesterday lol).
These problems don't affect every nvidia user, but they affect at least (at a guess) half of them. I've seen them on one system using an nf7 motherboard, and not seen them on another using an old kt7a motherboard. They range from instant lockups upon docking to white screens upon login to a fairly huge and complex variety of nasty things. If you don't have the problems, congratulations, and there's no need to post in this thread. If you do, it definitely seems like the onus is on CCP to change whatever directX calls are causing this behavour.
The nvnews site appears to have nothing on this. Nvidia release notes dont' acknowledge this as a problem, and forums over on leaked beta driver sites don't mention it. Of course, its possible that none of those people play eve, but the point is that if CCP were in contact with nvidia about this (as being a driver problem) , then it would likely appear in the release notes under "Nvidia driver xx.xx known issues". (where hundreds of other game problems can exist on any given release).
Even if its an nvidia driver issue, it'd be good to know that nvidia knows about it. I'll put a post up on the nvidia official forum and see if they know of any CCP contact about it and whether they acknowledge it as their problem or what.
It's really a long time to let this slide since drivers that're over a year old are the only known 'working' ones. I suppose newer cards can't even run using the last known working set of nvidia's (for eve) , like the 6800 GT mentioned above.
Anyway:: I've had all variants of these problems on GF4200, GF3, and GF2 cards on any version of the nvidia drivers newer than 53.03 (just to confirm RL Malcontent's original intent). Using 53.03, I've none of the problems, but like the guy says, you just might want to do something with your computer other than playing eve now and then (nah.. yeah.. nah .. yeah ;)

Edited by: Alex deLarge on 22/09/2004 06:38:33 Good post ! keep us updated on what are said on the official nvidia forums. I only have the first set of problems, they do not affect gameplay, but Minmatar stations are mostly transparent.

I am having a pure white screen when i normally put my username and password etc. Its completely white. Could this be related to me using a GF2 video card? Its a work PC and i doubt they would be happy if i went out and spend $50 on a card thats better. Im the sys admin here so security for my machine isnt an isnt an issue

Edited by: Solomon Silvereyes on 22/09/2004 15:30:51 I had the same "white box" problem. I downgraded to video driver version 45.23. Then I installed Eve from a friend's CD (and trashed the downloaded version). That seemed to fix things. I cant tell you which helped, but trying that version of the driver is easy to do.
My platform is Win98 SE/AMD 1800+/GEForce MX 200 (built into the motherboard)
Sidenote: After a free trial, I joined Eve the other day. But I am not very pleased about their lack of response to this NVIDIA issue. Where are the responses from the people who cash the checks? Hell, even if they said "i dunno" it would be better than silence ... |

The silence coming from the developers is very comforting... Come on devs, you know this is a legit problem. If this was yet another thread about the most important issue in Eve, nerfing missiles to the point of rendering them useless, we couldn't beat TomB off of it with a stick. How about a response to this Nvidia issue please?

the only bug i got now is that the minmatar stations are not displayed correctly. looks like they are all made from sticks.. all see through.
My system: AMD 64 3200+ Nvidia 6800GT
Its not a very "critical" problem, but very annoying.

I posted about this problem on nvnews.net (the 'official' nvidia forums), under the gaming central forum. I used the user name "Papol" and this is the URL of the thread:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=37288
It would be great if any of you with the problem(s) could visit that spot, register if you have to and reply to keep the thread alive long enough for an nvidia developer to either see it and reply or ignore it or whatever they want to do.
The main use I've had for nvnews in the past is on the linux drivers forum where I've had terrifically good luck with the people there much of the time, so lets hope the gaming part is also of use,
Thanks all,
Papol

I get the white screen of nothing-ness after upgrading to the latest driver for my NIVIDA GeForce MX440 card with 64Mb ram.
The version of the driver I have loaded is 6.14.0010.6177 with Directx version 9.0c
Wish this problem would get fixed as i can notlonger play any of my other games and use some of my graphics programs.

mmm after reading these posts I'm afraid to upgrade my videodrivers. Also wondered what that was up with some of those minmatar station only the sticks and wireframe. Now I see it is a bug. Oh well, I can play with less problems except that one, can't wait untill I see those minmatar stations in there full glory. __________________________________________________ "Time will reveal everything, but only once so be prepared." |
