Here I am 5 days old in eve and I get an invite to a chat channel. I accept to see what its all about. I am told to join audio and await a recruitment speech. I join the audio and shortly after I hear the voice of a corporation CEO. This guy pitches that he is recruiting for an industrial corporation that we have to be in a retriever in 2 weeks and that the only tax is if we sell to the corporation is 20%.
I have nothing to loose so I join. I get into my retriever and I start mining. This corporation aggressively recruits players with less than a month in the game and quickly grows to 300+. We get war dec'd a couple of times and even move our HQ from one end of the galaxy to the other. Our CEO tried to hop between alliances to kill the war dec's which he received a warning from CCP.
The corp that war dec'd us was trying to convince us that our CEO was scamming us. When we asked why they thought that they had one answer; he is selling shares in a corporation with no assets for 1 million isk each. So I did some research on the market discussion forums and discovered that a corporation can be operated with some level of transparency. So we had a meeting where all but 1 of the management team requested an audit and the CEO said no. He said we just had to trust him.
So after receiving a few billion isk for selling shares, no business plan, buying our ore with 20% taken off the top and no way to verify earnings for the corporation and refusing to allow an audit or to give viewing rights to the corp hangars to verify the corporation assets to back the shares I left the corporation.
I posted on the corp forums why I left. The post was immediately deleted and my new corp CEO received threats from my old CEO. This guy went as far as making up stories as to why I left the corporation. Further proof was given to me that 3 of his accounts were purchased accounts and his primary account was banned by CCP which he admitted to for selling isk. On top of that just a couple of days before leaving this corporation he openly admitted scams that he pulled off that day. These scams included selling shares to non corp members and just keeping the isk.
The other big scam he talked about but to my knowledge hasn't done yet is to convince other CEO's that he can, for a fee of 1 billion isk per 100 recruits, grow their corporations by 100 member via his recruitment methods. The scam is that the people he recruits he plans to steal.
Anyways I felt if anyone reading this post smells a scam to expain why so others can learn from my experience. Or if I am incorrect in my assessment to inform me of why.
Thanks.

It's stupid idiotic ppl that allow for this type of operation to exist. The only difference between you and the masses of sheep in that corp is that you got a bit smarter and started asking questions, researching, finding out what is beneath the surface layer. Now you have your facts but you still ask total strangers to judge and think for you.
Reread your thread ... try reading it as if it is your first time, and then draw your conclusion.
PS: When you draw your conclusion be thankfull this is a game and the experience you just got might just later in life keep your money safe - RL money this time not pretend money. |

I can see how this could be viewed. However I am hoping that the people still in the flock see this and realize like I did to get out. Most of this happened in 2.5 weeks so its not like I was blind and dumb. I was just naive to the culture of eve. |

--------- War isn't the answer. However, the objective isn't to provide answers rather than eliminate the question. |

If I understand correctly then either they sell minerals/ore to the corporation itself for 20% below actual value or when they sell it they give 20% to the corp. This guys sounds a bit odd, and this does sound like he is trying to run a massive corp for cash. I wonder how much cash you could get on 250 retrievers worth of ore ever day at a 20% markdown....? |

OP you may be new to the game and the overly complicated mechanics of everything but you did right to question and get out of the corp! You might want to inform anyone else you got on with in your time with the corp and go see employment with a DECENT corp.
Go check the recruitment section on this forum perhaps?
And Lana and Herty, shush. I have to be nice sometimes to counteract the mischief.
The quality of my replies is directly related to the QQuality of the opÆs comments |

TL;DR Version (might still be a little too long)
Newbie entered game got caught up in the newness and shiny internet spaceships, joined sweatshop Corp got scammed out of hard earned iskies(come on, mining is mind numbingly hard work).
Newbie wised up (hopefully with some others in Corp), questioned Scamming Task Master of a CEO, left Corp, joined another, Old CEO threatened Wiser, Poorer Newbie and his New CEO to keep them quite from exposing his newbie exploiting behavior.

This post should be more in the new player experience section, as a recruitment warning.
Is it a scam? No, but he's (ab)using the trust of younger players (or those who don't know better) to leech isk off them. Nothing new there, alot of people form corporations and go on an aggressive recruitment campaign just to get money off the tax.
New players just need to be wary of this and ask why a tax is set at a current level. Years ago it was normal to keep around 10% to cover offices, war fees, and different corporation programs. Many, even PvP corps, ran production inside the corp to cut costs. Today that isn't really necessary, and the investment to build such things are usually done individually. In light of that, and considering my own corp just had offices etc, I ran a 1% tax rate on mine. It covered alliance fee, offices, etc.
Either case, it's not C&P material, and it's not a scam either. Not more than playing the market, selling stuff over X value simply by price manipulation. |

Edited by: Katya Tereshkova on 26/06/2009 16:41:54 Ah so is this a name and blame forum then? I may try to talk Jon Marks into giving more info (with less words-he's that way with all the words lol).
So after finding out that this shartbag likes to cross the game line and make things personal (ie. trying to cause relationship problems, which won't work here), I'm quite willing to give up his name here (among many other things).
And just so it's clear for those that don't feel like reading the wordy OP, it's not just the tax on ore, it's the million isk share scam on a corp with little to no assets, it's the admitted scamming that's been done by same said CEO, such as selling shares to non corp members, then taking the isk and giving nothing, could go on and on, oh and the "donate real dollars scam". |
