Okay, so I don't know much about the new OS as it is. And I know that many people are going to start bashing it and MS in general in this thread.
But I thought you people would like to know that Windows 7 Home and Upgrade versions have a limited time preorder for half off. Home Upgrade is about $50 USD and Professional is $100 USD, no price cut for Ultimate. Just be advised, it is restricted to certain countries for the time being. US, Canada and Japan get first crack at it, followed by UK, Germany and France later.

Ive been running 7 since release of the first beta, Not 1 problem as of yet, Also, if you have a program that runs only on XP, you can fire up the Virtual XP enviroment and go from there, 7 is the only way to go |

I gave up on Vista several months ago. Such a memory hog. XP does what it says on the tin. Vista still seems like a beta OS in some ways.
I have a Windows 7 RC on my PC but cba to mess about with it. |

Once it natively supports XP-only programs without me having to fiddle with settings, I'll consider it.
I'm sick and tired of new platforms just tossing away the old stuff. News flash: People aren't going to simply buy a new OS and new everything at the drop of a hat. |

May keep an eye on that, it sounds like a good offer. Rumour has it that it will be RTM before the end of July.
I downloaded and installed the MSDN RC1 but had some problems with a couple of games (Neverwinter Nights 2 was one). I've since been using 64-bit b7127 for a couple of months now. It's not the public beta (b7000), it's not the public RC1 (b7100 I believe) but I think it's a leaked build that addresses a few minor behind-the-scenes issues in those two versions and is timebombed for June 2010.
I'm really happy with it. There are a handful of things I don't like (the inability to make my own dockable toolbars like I could easily in XP and in Vista with a little more effort, changes to configuring networks, etc) but on my hardware it's super-slick. Games work brilliantly on it (except for random CTDs in TF2 and The Witcher) though I think better graphics drivers will help performance here. My 56k modem doesn't work under x64 and that's the only casualty really. It's got the best parts of Vista (interface, driver architecture) but superior performance. Rock solid and some swish new features (can hide individual systray icons f.ex, network activities are drastically faster than XP, searching is brilliant (Vista feature I believe)), really nice OS. Installation was a piece of cake and the security features (firewall, UAC, file sharing) are a lot more intelligent than Vista.
And it's so pretty... -------------

Edited by: reads41 on 27/06/2009 21:21:22 Had it the 7100 rc build for a copuple of weeks and took the plunge this morning, so far so good, infact very good, I'm just waiting for it to implode.
Had no issues with any programs so far, quite bizarre really.
If it holds up i'll definately be buying it, got 3 months to screw around with it and see if it holds up. |

The only problem is that they won't be going XP to Win7 upgrades due to the large leap in implementation. So you need to have Vista to upgrade.
I'll eat my words, "If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications." is what it says on the website.
Any ideas on the full install versions? |

Actually, that has changed apparently. However now for you to upgrade from XP to W7, you will need to do a clean install, so no need to buy Vista.
And I don't think there will be a deal for the full install version. |

Im really not inclined to get windows 7 any more than I was inclined to get Vista (I only have that because it came on my laptop and im too lazy to downgrade it). Given the blunder that Vista was at first ill wait a good long while until public paid beta (first 6 months-year after launch) is done.
Also, Windows XP virtual envroment? So basicly anything currently on XP wont run on Windows 7 by itself? What about games like Oblivion and Eve? On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

Wrong.
Most games and programs that work in XP work in Vista. The virtual environment is just there to use with stuff that doesn't work in 7 anymore. I imagine the main purpose is for those with legacy programs that they either can't upgrade, or won't. I imagine it's aimed at business with proprietary programs that are still needed, but that isn't worth the time/effort of making 32 or 64 bit. |

Whats the point? XP works fine and does what I want it to. The only reason I'd want to upgrade to another opperateing system is to get the 64 bits. And if I was doing that I don't really see any good reason to stick with Windows anymore.

Since it's free, you should give RC1 a try. I too loved XP and didn't even dream of upgrading to anything else, but once I gave 7 a try, I was hooked.
You may be surprised how good it is. It's almost as if MS said, "Where have we gone wrong before, and how can we fix it?"
Scary I know, but they didn't really, they just stopped wiping their noses with Franklins and started using that goop between their ears. In a few years they may be on to something wonderous. |

Also saw that Newegg has the same offer, but free shipping on the boxed version, as opposed to the $5 shipping from Microsoft. With the money you save, you can buy half a movie ticket! -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |
