First, I have a 20m SP missile focused Raven pilot for missions. I really enjoy drones, but am reluctant to spend too many skill points on drones because Caldari ships have fairly small bays. I cannot really see a need to train up t2 heavies for Caldari missile ships. Right now, my drones just keep frigates busy. Does anyone else focus on drones with Caldari?
Second, since I am wanting to be a drone heavy pilot, I am trying to decide whether to crosstrain into Gallente, or if my only real option is to open yet another account and go pure Gallente. Crosstraining worries me since I already have years of training ahead to flesh out this Caldari character. Crosstraining would certainly spread my skills a bit thin. Of course, I would not have to worry about raising my standings again and doing learning skills again (mine are max) and such...
Any advice?
Summary: 1. Anyone focus on drones with Caldari? 2. Crosstrain or go alt for Gallente drone boats.
Thanks much |

1: Yeah, I hear thems Carrier Pilots use Drones alot... 2: CROSSTRAIN. going for an alt will take WAY longer to do well, and If you have 20 mil sp you should be relativly close to a well skilled Domi, since I mean, Mission Domi's dont fit guns... do they?
But seriously, if you have 20 mil sp, getting a Domi will be barely another 2-3 mil sp at most if your skills are applied right.

Good point about the Carrier. I should have mentioned subcapital. I am not interested in flying anything past battleship/marauder really.

If yo really want to use drones as nearly your main damage dealer i would strongly suggest going gallente. No other race gets as much damage out of drones as us.
Many of our ships get a 25% or 50% bonus to drone damage. The order would be, Vexor -> Myrmridon -> Dominix.
if you wish to stay in caldari ships there are only 4 or so skills you should max and leave heavy and Sentry drones alone.
Drones Drone Interfacing Scout Drone operation Drone Sharpshooting Drone Navigation Racial Specialization
Even if you are Gallente you would still use hybrids for battleships and medium/light drones for frigates. If you arent gallente simply max your use on light and medium and youll be set since heavies are really slow. |

Im a 20mill SP Raven Pilot also. Got every relevant drone skill "maxed" (not racials/Durability to 5) and I like it. Im also planning to crosstrain gallente when I remap to max perc/will.
Also if you crosstrain gallente and train hybrid guns you are opening more caldari ships.

With last year's missile changes, drone skills became required for missile ships, since oversized missiles were made radically worse against smaller targets.
So yes, you want as many drone SP as possible, especially if you fly something like a Raven. |

Summary: 1. Anyone focus on drones with Caldari? 2. Crosstrain or go alt for Gallente drone boats.
1. You are correct in that there is little point to training Heavy Drones (at all, let alone to V) if you're flying only Caldari ships. Every pilot, including mission runners, will benefit from having Drone Interfacing trained to IV, and the ability to use Warrior/Valkyrie II's and Hobgoblin/Hammerhead II's (Scout Drone Op V, Minmatar/Gallente Drone Spec II). Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing at IV will give you ~ 57km drone control range on all drones, so that is a good skill to have, as are the other drone support skills to IV (navigation, sharpshooting, and to a lesser extent durability).
2. Feel free to cross-train if you want to. I would train Drone Interfacing to V before getting Gallente Cruiser/Battleship V, though. DI gives benefits to drone damage regardless what ship you fly. You can, however, train Gallente BS IV and mission/rat successfully with DI IV.
To see if you like Drone boats, train up Gallente Cruiser III and take a level 2 mission in a Vexor. Don't fit any railguns in the high slots, and see how you like taking down a mission with just drones. This will give you insight into what its like mission running in a Dominix before investing a lot of skillpoints down that road.
The significant benefits of a PvE Domi over a PvE Raven are: 1. Better defense against gankers (more important in 0.0 or lowsec than highsec) since you can easily fit 1-2 neuts in the high slots. 2. Easier to fit a tractor and salvager without impairing your dps or defense.
That's about it. If you do most of your looting/salvaging on a second account, or by going back after completing a dense mission, and if you only mission in highsec, there is little reason to cross train to another race except you want to experience the variety. Mission running (or ratting) in a Dominix isn't going to be faster than doing it in a Raven.
