hi. just started with eve few days ago so i still don't know lots about game. i would like ur help to avoid learning unnecessary skills:)
as u probably can see on avatar, i am minmatar. currently i developed minmatar frigates to level 3 and using probe frigate to mine. probe is good, but not good enough to really profit from mining. what should it be? for solo mining in systems up to 0.3 or 0.4. i can learn neccesary skills so it doesn't have to be ship of minmatar origin... it even can be (/spits) amarr :)

If you want to mine solo, the best ship you can pick up is a Galante Cruiser called a Thorax
As well as the skills needed to fly the ship (galante frigate 4, galante cruiser 3 and space ship command 3). Drones, Scout Drones, Heavy Drones and Drone Interfacing will be your defence. Mining and Astrogeology will allow you to use the better mining lasers and mine more ore Skills to be able to use cpu upgrades so you can use all your mining lasers Skills to be able to use capicitor batterys to increase cap size and not run out while mining
Refining skills so you can refine your ore into minerals and not lose much do to waste
Skills to drive industral ships so you can carry more at a time
And always the "learning" skills if you ever have a point of not knowing what to study.
Thats a fairly long list and could be a while till you get it all, so do what you can, and maybe even run some agent missions instead of mining if you want a change and get to see some more of the universe.

To be honest, it's not really worth mining in a frigate IMHO. I would wait until you can get your hands on a cruiser. You'll be able to profit so much more from that.
If you're planning solo mining, I'd recommend using a cruiser with 4 miners (miners II preferably), and fill a large secure with whatever it is you're mining. Then shoot back to the station, grab your indy, and haul it all back. If you have the proper skills, and patience you can start mining a mil an hour.

Join a Miner Corporation. Some have pretty nice deals for a rookie. They will fit you with a ship bigger then you would be able to by yourself and they will give you % on what you mine everyday or some even pay you by the hour.
If you wish to stay Minmatar and save yourself a lot of training time, you can go Industrial and buy yourself a Hoarder. With a Hoarder you can mine in safe system while being afk. It will take approx. 2 hours to fill the cargo. Use cargo expanders and you get 8000m3 of space. By doing this you will earn about 300k isk in every 3 hours. Mine Veldspar or Scordite and sell it, don't refine it cause this will pay of less in secure systems.
The best Frigate to mine with is the Rifter imo. The best Cruiser to mine with is the Rupture? I fly a Stabber and with that I can fit four Miner II, enough to fill your tiny cargo space in no time. The good thing about the Stabber is that you can fit two Missile Launchers and arm them with light missiles, enough to combat NPC in 0.5 systems or more secure ones. Nowadys I team up with my corp members and mine with them, no need for hauling...
--- We have the technology for destruction. Can we use that knowledge to survive, reverse the process and make something great? Our calling is not to die - we have to find a way to survive... |

Edited by: Vahn Jahr on 21/09/2004 14:18:53 Edited by: Vahn Jahr on 21/09/2004 14:17:07 I started playing 4 or 5 days ago, so far alot of fun for me. I dont know much at all about this game yet, but im learnin sumthin new everyday, which is good:) I saved enough to get a Badger ship, added some expanded cargos, and bought a couple giant secure containers. I dont have a mining ship yet tho:( im still usin my Bantam with a pair of good mining lasers and an expanded cargo. I just mine and work on the skills to get myself into a cruiser as soon as i can. Mining is finally starting to pay decent for me.

If you want more action but don't have the isk to buy a big ship, a Cruiser fitted with 2-3 Miner IIs, missile launchers, and a projectile turret is enough for you to enter 0.5 or lower rated systems. You can fight the NPCs and still mine from asteroids containging Omber och Pyro, which pays of better at market then Scordite, Veldspar and Plag. --- We have the technology for destruction. The Scythe has become the best Minmatar mining cruiser now it has a mining yield bonus, of 20% per lvl of cruiser skill. It can fit 3 miner IIs, and 2 launchers for defense as well. If you want to stay minmatar, a Scythe and Hoarder/Mammoth combination is good for solo mining. Cloista Shadowblade. CEO of the Eligible Target Corp |

Yeah the Scythe is very good because of its bonus, but you may want to consider how low sec you really want to go. I don't know if the Scythe has enough defenses and offensive power to withstand the NPC's you'll find in 0.3 and 0.4, let alone the player pirates.
Mining is sometimes counter-intuitive a bit. Although the rarer ores do give more profit, they also incur a lot of downtime due to the low security systems they're in. If you have to uninstall a laser and install a weapon so you can survive, it may not be that efficient.
You may actually make more money mining plain old scordite, veldspar, or the other ores (although with the current prices of mexallon, pyrox and plagio aren't that great), simply because you can mine them uninterrupted, with the maximum number of lasers, and without being bothered by pirates.
