Been wanting to change not just the set-up but also the look of your ship to your tastes a bit?
I just put up a proposal regarding ship customization options for the CSM to consider, mainly asking for a selection of colour schemes. Head this way if you'd like to add your support.
I know I really shouldn't be doing this, but I suppose some of the ppl in this section may care about the issue, and never check the Assembly Hall, and I felt I should to raise all the support I can get for this. |

Wow, this is so completely new and interesting. Nobody has ever suggested anything like this, EVER! Wow! You're awesome!!!
/sarcasm off
But anyway, good luck with that suggestion. It's been around for many years with no success.
Hello, I'm from the Government and I'm here to help. |

If you add needing to load individualized details to every ship (even if no customization is done, that still is a trait which needs to be loaded) in the current grid (which is what you're suggesting), you dramatically increase server load. Think about exiting a station in Jita or heck, any of the big hubs. CCP wants to reduce (or make more efficient) calls to their servers - increasing them only costs them money (increasing their available hardware to compensate, stuff like that).
Depending upon how it was done (custom decals on the sides of ships sound pretty cool, for instance), you also make the rendering job a bit tougher. Not much, but CCP is trying to keep EVE playable on very low end hardware, so it's a consideration. Those are before you look into how much work it would be for them, when they can't even be arsed to finish all the things they've promised already.
I'd love to see it, but there's no way in hell it'll happen. Cheers, mate. |

They could make it one of those affects that can be turned on and off though. I would like to see this happen, but, I don't think it will. |

just being able to change the overal hue of your ship would be an improvement (Pink thorax anyone??) and woudlnt add to much in terms of overhead for network traffic.
Adding the ability to custom skin the ships would be awesome, but would kill network and require huge server side storage, or client storage and upload, which would be even slower.

It is doable quite easily without much increased network traffic but i think only about one such instance:
-ccp gives you like 6-7 color schemes for each ship you choose one of those -there need to be only one additional value loaded for each ship: number of paint job -client side do the rest
but heavily customizable paint jobs and even worst corps logos and such on ships are out of the question unfortunetly.. or fortunetly there are quite a few color blind eve players that would fly pink/green/violet/purple ships around... piracy and suicidal ganking would increase exponentially... |

Corp logos would actually be easier since they could be done completely client side. You already have all the corp/alliance info of everyone in local, sticking a decal on a model is trivial. The hard part would be getting the art department to figure out where on each ship it goes, since I imagine they're doing more important things.

I`m not so sure about that part;)
I didnt`t checked eve code obviously but imho corp logos are loaded only after you click show info on toon, only after this request is send to server server is sending stream of data about corp logo. If all corps logos from local was loaded automatically after you enter system you would need to download quite a bit of data when entering for example jita;) this didnt't match up with they "need for speed". |
