Totally Hopeless

yeah, same old stupid question but eve-search turned up so much dross it was impossible to weed thru.
I understand that using a non-max run copy of a module will result in fewer runs on a success.
But a success with a ship = 1 run max unless you're using a decryptor. Or does a max run BPC kick out 2 runs?
Thus: If I'm going to invent ships, can I use single run copies for that 1 success, or will max run copies make any difference at all if I do not use decryptors?

As you suspect, for ship invention, max run copies only matter for getting the extra runs from decryptors.
If you aren't using a decryptor then both max and single run BPCs will net you a 1 run T2 BPC. AE's T1 BPC Store - Rigs, Ammo, Modules and Ships |

1 run ship BPCs can be used for invention normally. If you use decryptors use a max run.
Although, recently I was using some very old BPCs and got some amazing runs out of invention. A 10 run Hawk BPC, and numerous 100 run drone BPCs. I wish I had looked at the runs before I started the jobs. If I recall correctly there were little to no restrictions on the number of runs on a BPC back in 2003 or 2004. You could essentially use a BPC from that time to invent a higher run T2 BPC now. I might be smoking crack here... all I know is that I got T2 BPCs from inventing with 10x more runs than normal because I used a set of old BPCs I found... "Syndicate? What's that? A crime drama?"

That clears things up nicely.
Now just to see if kicking out single run ships is cost effective. What are the success percentages again?

Yes, they changed the numbers on 'max run copies' a while back because people were getting successes far beyond the design parameters of invention... a'la 10 run ship and 100 run module/drone, ect.

Ah cool! Thanks for answering that... I was dumbfounded as to how I was getting these numbers of runs, now I see. "Syndicate? What's that? A crime drama?"

Actually no. Changing the numbers on 'max run copies' is exactly what caused the successes explained by the design parameters. They made the first changes to limit runs years before invention existed, and they made the second/third batch of changes to make items of the same type consistent in their max runs.
This explains how your runs DO change if you use an old BPC that is > max runs
Output Runs = min(max( round down ( (InputBPCRuns / T1MaxRunsPerBlueprintCopy) * (T2MaxRunsPerBlueprintCopy / 10) + DecryptorRuns ), 1), T2MaxRunsPerBlueprintCopy)
